Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Finding out Justin Bieber is a Christian.

The Challenger is the big one for me. Growing up in Florida, we used to go outside the front yard, and you can see them launch from our house, even 150+ miles south... I was in 2nd grade, and the 3rd grade class got to watch it live. I think I must have gone to the bathroom, and a girl came running down the hall yelling, "The Challenger exploded!!" My mom was at home, watching it on TV, she took a picture of the TV screen, of the vapor trails going in not the right directions. My grandparents were flying home to Michigan from our house in S Florida, so they were literally in the air, with the shuttle when it happened. The story is that they could see it out the plane window and I think there was a minister/priest/rabbi/man of the cloth on the plane, and he led the plane in prayer b/c they were kinda uncertain as to what exactly happened.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Church Names.

So my church is boring, name of where I live, etc.. But I work in churches, and get to visit LOTS! My recent favorite was a church that apparently just went through a name change... It's now called Living Hope Baptist Church, but it was located on LITTLE HOPE road... so finally I asked, and lo and behold, yes, at one point, it had been a church that was called Little Hope.... sounds encouraging, huh? The town I went to college in, Lakeland, Florida, had two of the most awesome names of churches... *MIracle Deliverance Church #2 (don't quite know where that one falls in naming, but we always felt the #2 part was significant, especially since we never saw #1) and, a forever favorite, *First Baptist Church at the Mall (definitely a GPS name)

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Loving on your friend who is 3 weeks late on Internet trends.

Add me to the list of "What? Joel McHale, at Christian Conference?!?!" I never knew! Apparently there's lots of us who missed out on that one! It's funny, actually, this sort of thing happened to me the other day. I was with my aunt and cousin, and we had mentioned the Double Rainbow guy, and my aunt hadn't seen it, so we explained it to her (didn't have the video on hand b/c we were out) and explained that it had already become viral, and became made into a song, so it's been out a while, as well as the guy who's sister got attacked ("Run and tell that, homeboy") and IT was made into a song, too... and then not 3 hours later, we were sitting, painting pottery, and these two teenage girls were yakkin' up a storm, and one mentioned the Double Rainbow, and the other was clueless, and to the first one, it's like it just happened YESTERDAY!! We laughed, to ourselves, for quite a long time.. See, we could do that, tho, b/c we didn't know them! lol

reread the tweet before sending, you never know what "help" your fancy schmancy auto spell check has given you! Sometimes I don't get to follow in close to real time, so going back over the day, there's nothing more frustrating than seeing someone who's tweeted something like, "Oh, forget that last tweet, I meant blah blah blah" and then a slew more of replies that are like, "Oh, yeah, @closebuddyjim I can't believe I did that!!! yeah, that was SO embarassing, forgive me ya'll" And then I can't figure it out b/c they've deleted the embarassing one.. I wanna know! Either check so it doesn't happen, leave it and be embarassed, or delete and pretend like it never happened!! I'm just sayin'.
Is there some sort of contract being negotiated with Christian radio stations that says that now that you've got custody of Tait, they are required to play TobyMac immediately before or after playing Born Again? Cause, I swear, every station I'm hearing is doing that and it's kinda weird!! Real question tho, What was behind the decision to record Jesus Freak with KJ-52? Isn't that kinda risky? It's so iconic to dcTalk and CCM in general, why take 1/3 of the original, add some other stuff and try again?

Jon, you know God works through you, right? Cause today's just proof of that even more. Today marks one year since I was basically kicked out of my dream job. I miss it, i miss it terribly.... today's been a day of reflection, seeing where the last year has gone, wondering what I'm supposed to be doing with my life, b/c I've since taken a job solely to keep afloat, and I don't have a clue what I even think I want to do. You know how they say to do what you love, or find a job that you love, instead of one just to make ends meet? I don't even know where to start looking for that job, I feel really just sort of clueless. I'm also not seeking God the way I should be. My quiet time is non-existent. I don't have a place to fellowship with other believers or find accountability. This is partially due to my job b/c it's a traveling position. i feel lost b/c I'm afraid of seeking God's will for me b/c it scares me. I feel like a blank canvas afraid of the artist and what he'll paint on me.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Hobby Lobby.

Um. yes... The part of Florida I am from is NOTHING like The South. We affectionately call it South New York or Northern Cuba... I can't find good biscuits or sweet tea or a "Bless your heart" anywhere... But down there, if you want a great bagel and Cuban coffee (or for that matter, Brazilian or Haitian cuisine) all you have to do is drive a block...

I also love the Hobby Lobby... I didn't really discover it until I moved up to the South... I don't know if we had them down in South Florida, but in Middle Tennessee, oh yes, they're here.
Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Let's have a VBS-tastic summer!

i love the monopoly each denomination has on VBS these days. If it existed back in they day, I didn't know about it... what I mean, is, if you're baptist, you probably got your VBS from Lifeway, which means this year is Saddle Ridge Ranch... However, if you're Methodist, then Cokesbury has what appears to be Galactic Blast.... Not sure where the other denominations fall, but it's amusing, nonetheless!! I love walking up to people, reading their shirts, and then going, "lemme guess.. Baptist, right?" even if the church name isn't on the shirt.. It's kinda neat, knowing these kids will have shared experiences with people all over the country, but it means no one has to suffer through the scary, homegrown VBS's from the early 80's! lol

OH MY GOSH! That was AWESOME! Very rarely do i speak aloud while watching some random YouTube clip... that had a "OH MY GOSH" and "HOLY CRAP" both... Just how well it fit! I don't love Gaga, but I was pre-exposed to her without warning before she hit it big, and was completely confuzed. Newsies on the other hand.. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE! I spent one entire summer of Jr High only listening to the Newsies soundtrack!!!

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Should little kids be allowed in big church?

i don't think the problem is so much the children ever, but the parents. It seems to me that if you're a parent who wants to bring their child, of whatever age, into "big church", then your first responsibility there is to be a parent. If you've already done your job, and your children can sit quietly and pay attention, or at least find some way to entertain themselves quietly during the entire service, then sure, bring them in. If that's not the case, and you don't have perfect little angels, then I think as a parent you need to realize that at some point you might have to pull yourself away from whatever is going on in the service to take care of your children. If they're being fussy, or loud, or fidgety or just disturbing others around you (the movement in your direction of other people's heads is a sure sign there's a problem!) then you might have to figure out a way to fix that. You might have to stop paying attention to the sermon, or stop singing or whatever. People don't look your way until it's past the point of minor distraction... trust me. My biggest peeve of this is when parents want to bring the kids in, and aren't prepared or wise about it. I was at a service and there were three children and two parents. And the parents were sitting next to each other. I could be wrong here, but it seems when there are that many kids, the parents need to divide and conquer! Three little ones, two about the same age (5 or 6) who couldn't sit still. The worst part was when there was some "special music" and we were all sitting and worshiping along, until the kids started acting the song out. It had "running" in the chorus, and they started running in their chairs, which meant swinging their legs, which hit right in the small of my back (not pews here, chairs like in the video, but with holes for little feet) Parents did nothing.. MANY people gave the thousand yard death stare... parents didn't care, kids responded.. seems like the parents' stare was broken that day.. only explanation, right?

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Figuring out if you're at a Christians concert.

I've got two bands that top my lists... Jars of Clay and Third Day... I can't quit either one of them.. Seen 'em both more than 25 times (once you get past 25 you kinda have to stop counting.. 25 makes you look insane no matter how you try to explain it, so I just leave it there.. First time I saw both of those bands was in 1995... 25 shows over 15 years, it's not so bad.. HA!) So.. my pet peeve?? This comes at EVERY.SINGLE Jars of Clay show... it's the person who screams the name of the band's biggest hit at every quiet moment.. Without fail, when it gets quiet, someone screams "FLOOOOOOOD!!!!!!!!!!" And I just want to scream, "OF COURSE THEY'LL PLAY IT!! But this is just the 2nd song!!!!!!!!" I think my peeves of Christian concerts, and things i notice at them stem from the fact that some people have never been to concerts before, and somehow being at a Christian show, they miss out on all those "rules" that secular shows go on with, unspoken of course.. Eh.. whatever.. I still go, cause I still just looooove live music.
