My parents also made pot roast! When I told my dad we were making crab legs he was like "Oh wow you're so fancy"

sailor_red_star, which was also the name of my personal sailor moon character, who was a sailor star light. So yes, if you were wondering, I was Very Cool

But I've actually had spacevalkyrie for over 10 years across various platforms, so, yes, I am still Very Cool

As a person with very little poetry experience post-high school, I'm so grateful for all the poetry posts on the Toast. I'm discovering so many beautiful things, and I'm particularly looking forward to diving into Anne Carson today.

Oh the braid pulling. And the first amyrlin's constant fish puns. It isn't perfect, for sure.

That article was fantastic, and somehow also hasn't deterred me from reading the rest? I just love me an expansive world, even if all the women constantly sniff.

So for anyone who wants a fantasy book where the magic users are like "YES MAGIC UGH IT IS SO AWESOME AND FEELS GREAT" please see Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series.

Its seriously fun stuff, there's like 12 books (I'm on number three), and only women are allowed to use magic because dudes historically fucked it up so bad that they are "gentled" whenever they show the ability to do so. Also, there are wolves and witch school and lots of intrigue.

There are maps, though.

Definitely Lucy Snowe/Ginevra Fanshawe, please.

And in a similar (and unasked for) vein...

So uh this is similar (but Magic players would say very different) but I rather aggressively collect and play the Pokemon card game. I started playing because my husband and I were looking for something to do together that wasn't drinking (ends up that we drink while playing but thats cool) and I specifically said "NO NOT MAGIC, LETS GET THIS CUTE ONE INSTEAD"

I've pretty much browbeat most of my friends into playing it with me, but its getting to the point where it isn't that fun because, well...

ok

I'm so much better than everyone I know. There is no competition. SO I've been super on the fence about going to a local game store and playing against someone (probably a small child) who would royally kick my ass but I have several worries

1) only children play pokemon, or so I've been told
2) I am a 27 year old woman and I may scare the mothers of some children
3) game stores are only second to comic book stores in the feeling of "VAGUELY NORMAL LOOKING LADY, YOU DO NOT BELONG HERE"

Thanks, Toast, for giving me a place to vent about my very specific hobby I might be taking to the next level

Hi Toast-pals!

My parents are talking about maybe starting an artists' residency program on their 16+ acres of ranchland (with lake) in the Central Valley. They want me to be a part of it. The idea fills me with both excitement and fear.

Does that sound like an absolutely insane idea? Or even vaguely viable?
