No need to rein yourself in or fear being seen as heartless, grumpy or curmudgeon-like. Opportunity and personal responsibility are gifts that the compassionate give. Our family loves to give. It's big fun! Having our money taxed away from us is not fun; It's wrong. It's not even forced charity; it's theft, and more specifically, armed robbery. I must be more curmudgeony than you, because I believe government has no place at all giving any tax money welfare, and that family and the church and neighbors should be the source of a leg up.
