I truly fail to see why this is the City's fault. A seasonal stream is naturally occurring. The City is probably upset their property is being damaged by this "Act of God" as well.

The developer/builder that sold this property had to have known about this....it is highly unlikely they were able to purchase and develop the property within the few months of dry weather in Oregon. The City can only regulate what is disclosed. I feel sorry for these people but I will be furious if the City spends a dime of taxpayer money to help them. Again, they need to go after the builder who is probably out of business so now they are pointing fingers at the City.

BTW, terrible reporting KATU...this is about as incomplete as a story can get. You get the sympathy viewer by filming a woman crying but leave out all relevant facts!

“It’s a peaceful demonstration. Outside from being in the park after hours, there’s been no illegal activity,” said Simpson.

Did they forget that it is illegal to block off a street? That's kind of a major one.

Seriously, I work right next door and most of the protestors are just the downtown street kids riding out the "party". This is a fun distraction and they get to pitch a tent right in the middle of downtown Portland. I agree with the point the legit protestors are making but they really need to get the heck out of the street. It's make me (the 99%) late for work.

Lakeosteve, I really don't get your attitude. I apologize if you've ever been cut off or inconvenienced by a cyclist...I am assuming this has never happened to you by a fellow motorist? But how can a cyclist "belittle" a motorist? Really, I am confused.

I personally think you are just an angry person who is frustrated by the freedom of bicycle commuters. I used to be one of the "angry ones" until I finally got off my butt and started riding my bike to work. I am addicted and feel better than I have in years. Enlightened is a good way to describe it.

I am (as are many, many others) very respectful to traffic laws and staying over as far as I can to let vehicles by. I don't expect you to smile but I do expect you to pay attention, drive safely and respect my right to share the road.

If there were more cars on the road instead of the bikes, you'd be equally inconvenienced by the additional traffic. As a I zoom across the Hawthorne Bridge on my morning commute to work, I can't help but feel a bit sorry for all of the motorists stuck in traffic. You should be happy the 5,000+ bicycles crossing that bridge every day shorten your wait.

Wow. I am almost speechless how you can turn just about anything around to justify your position. True or not. You and my 80 year-old, right-wing, FOX news watching father (who believe everything on FOX news) would be BFF's.

First of all, for cyclists and pedestrians to ride together on a shared path (bike/pedestrian facility) design guidelines require the clear zone width to be a MINIMUM of 8-feet wide. This is because anything less than that is unsafe (as a phijef correctly pointed out). 75% of all sidewalks within the City of Portland have less than 5-feet clear of utilities or signs making this unsafe....many streets, especially in southwest Portland, do not have sidewalks at all. Suggesting that bicycles ride on sidewalks is ill-conceived at best. It's also illegal in the central business district downtown.

Second of all, freeways are logically unsafe for pedestrians and bicycles because there are not facilities within the right-of-way designed to accommodate them...you'll be thrilled to learn that your tax dollars are hard at work constructing shared paths along freeway corridors. It won't be long until bicycles and pedestrians get to share the public right-of-way that freeways are located in.

Lastly, you are looking at the use of the public right-of-way all wrong. Priority should be given to pedestrians (who were there first), horse and buggies (they are legal if properly licensed), then bicycles and lastly motor vehicles. So next time you are using the right-of-way in your vehicle, make sure you know your rank and drive accordingly. I'll expect you to pass me on my bicycle at a safe speed with plenty of shy distance.

I don't get it...there really needs to be something between me and my bike seat. Gross. Most folks look a lot better with their clothes on anyway.

I am truly shocked at the number of posts to this article slamming pedestrians. It is a pedestrian's responsibility to assert their right-of-way and a driver's to stop per the law...it's not a "Portland thing" and not subject to debate. The decoy pedestrian in this situation was doing all things correctly and the drivers still didn't stop. They all deserved tickets. It's not up to a driver to 'not stop because they didn't think it was safe for the pedestrian to cross' or similar excuses.

Wow. There really is a case for mandatory sterilization in some situations. It is sad that some people want children so bad but cannot conceive yet this poor excuse for a human can breed like a rabbit. I feel sorry for the children and may the little one rest in peace.

Whoa. Gods? Bow and scrape at their feet? No one is "crying foul". The doctor admitted her mistake. My doctor's have always been nothing less than considerate and compassionate people. Furthermore there is a Medical Review Board that will certainly be reviewing this case. Many doctors lose their licenses due to negligence.

The only point you make that I do agree with is that a physician's hours should be limited like in the case of the DOT. Undoubtedly this would reduce the number of mistakes made due to fatigue.

If a doctor lost their license after a single mistake there would be no doctors. If you think it takes a long time to get an appointment and that it is expensive now, it would be insane under your ideaologies. You know the old law of "supply and demand"? There is a reason for the Medical Review Board and I am certain this doctor will have some explaining to do...she didn't kill anyone (or even come close for that matter).
