Orphanages have been relabeled "group homes". There are quite a number around the country still. There are two just within a half hour of where I live in Ohio.

Wednesday night since my husband works that night, we usually have baseball games, and it's just the dreary middle of the week. Dinner planning makes me exhausted. :)

I am going to do this with my sweet boy! We do something similar when we do theraplay, but he's getting older and learning to see himself differently, so I think this would be really powerful for him.

One Thankful Mom : $100 Shell Card Giveaway and Saving Money at the Pump

We are foster parents, and the amount of time I spent in the car during the 11 months we had our last placement was outrageous. Not to mention the other kids' therapy appointments, sports games, after-school activities, etc. Somehow I thought being a 'stay-at-home mom' meant that I would stay at HOME. That's turned out to be really untrue. :) A gas card would give us some much needed relief!

One Thankful Mom : Giveaway: Karyn Purvis/TCU DVD

I'd love to hear more about food issues. I wonder if you have different kids with different food issues. For example, I have one that cannot have free access to food because she has no 'shut-off' and I have one who needs free access to food to feel safe. Do you have more than one child with food issues, are they the same issues, and if not, how do you balance that? (maybe this is more of a Tuesday Topic than a general topic)

http://www.rageagainsttheminivan.com/ : @#$* people say during elections

Sister's friend's status update - "Everybody seems to be quoting the Bible about the election, so: "Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks." Psalm 137:9 First comment on that status - "You know, this is more apprapoe than you may think. No matter how this election comes out, it does feel as if we are doing just this when it comes to the national debt we are leaving for future generations. Good choice of verses, my friend!"

One Thankful Mom : Tuesday Topic: Working Through Anger

I think that Lisa has a post called "when sad looks like mad" - that has been oh so true in our home. Our son joined our family at almost three, we adopted him at four, and now, at five, we are really seeing some fruit of our years of patient love and consistency. (not that we're always patient. or consistent. but that's our goal, anyway.) There aren't nearly as many changes as we'd like, but we take each small step as a major victory. Bit by bit, piece by piece, you are building trust and attachment in your son. It's exhausting and at times, demoralizing, and sometime all-consuming, but there is joy to come. We knew this whole time that the other kids were being affected, but I feel like we're just seeing some of the fall-out from that as well. I wish I had more encouragement on that front. Our older kids really bore a whole lot of weight and responsibility and pain throughout this process. They did it with such grace for so long that we thought they might have escaped some of the trauma. But as we're finding out now, they felt it too. There's healing for all of us to go through yet. I'm praying for you this evening.

One Thankful Mom : The Downward Descent

Even as I lift your family in prayer this evening, I am so blessed by your honesty and determination and commitment, even in the face of great sacrifice. Isn't that just what He's called us to? Sacrificial love - both your love for Jesus and your love for Dimples are shining through every word you share with us.

One Thankful Mom : My Learning Curve: EMDR and a Plan for "Big Feelings"

I loved The Whole Brain Child so much that I did a whole blog series on it. I borrowed it from the library, but it is on my list to purchase because there is so much in there for all ages of development. It put a lot of things that I knew from experience more concisely and focused than I was able to do and really gave me a lot of simple explanations to share both with my kids and with others.

One Thankful Mom : Tuesday Topic: Sabotaging Holidays and Other Fun

A bit of an addendum to this question: The word 'sabotage' to me indicates 'on purpose'. I'm interested to hear how many of you feel your kids do this purposefully vs. subconsciously. I don't sense from my son that he ruins events and fun things on purpose as much as he just doesn't understand how to handle it at all and reacts in a negative way that is familiar to him. He's only five - is that because of his age? Will purposeful sabotage perhaps occur when he's older? For our part, we do try to prep him for fun events, but I know from talking to other moms that they choose NOT to prep because that gives their kids more time to sabotage.
