Thanks for the comment, Matt. While I do think these statistics have some limitations (as you point out), I still think they show an interesting trend in terms of the height and weight of MLB players on rosters. As you suggest, it would be interesting to look at starters, or players who hit over .300, etc to see how the size of starters has changed over the years.

Thanks for the comment, Jay. The point you bring up is a great one and as I wrote the above post, I had tentatively planned to write a follow up addressing that topic. I haven't gotten around to writing the second part of this post, but I agree that "profitability" isn't necessarily the goal. Some athletic expenditures could qualify as general marketing expenses for the university as they help raise awareness, increase applications, etc. That being said, given the economy, it appears universities are less willing to subsidize athletics and essentially want them to stand on their own.

Thanks for the comment Zack. I'll have to look around to see if there are stats on the speed of the game. It would be fairly easy to do in football thanks to the NFL Combine, but can't think of anywhere where speed is documented consistently in baseball.

Thanks for the comment Matt and interesting questions you raise. I don't have the data to study the affect of height on pitching effectiveness but it would certainly be interesting to look at! In its simplest form I think some of it has to do with physically being taller, delivering closer to the plate, and some psychological in terms of people "thinking" a taller pitcher is better thus getting more opportunities. I'll follow up this piece with on on ERA relative to height but as a preview there was very little ERA difference relative to height.

Thanks for the comment Deandra. I didn't mention it in the post, but you bring up a great point in self hosting. Like you said, it gives you a lot more flexibility in controlling the name as well as look and feel of the website.

Glad you found a few variations for your name! It's a small investment that can pay big dividends down the road in terms of controlling your name online so I'm sure you'll be glad to have the domain names.

Darren and Justin,

Thanks for the comments! The comment thing was more of an idea I wanted to try but hasn't quite been as successful as I hoped. It hasn't been the reason I haven't posted lately - been busy with a few other projects. I have quite a few drafts of different ideas ready to go, so I'll be posting more content in the next few days.
