GazetteOnline.com : Iowans in the National Football League

I think you missed mentioning a few native Iowa boys' hometowns? I might not have them all right, and I don't know them all, but to take a stab at a couple: Marshall Yanda is from Anamosa (this I'm certain of), Matt Kroul is a Mt. Vernon boy, I think Mitch King is from Bettendorf or Burlington, and Brandon Myers is a Des Moines-area grad.

America - and the Today Show - ought to milk the fact that he did what he did and doesn't have an ambulance chaser on retainer. Great story for Josh as a person, and Iowa/the program under Kirk. In a country where the #2 retirement plan is "sue someone", this is huge. Congrats Josh. You're more than a superhero.

Peter, what makes you think "we" are liberals? To my knowledge, you don't know me, or my politics. I'm merely asking you to provide a solution, as a fellow conservative. Do you have one? So far, the answer is 'no'.

Oh my PeterDuncan.....you are such a loser, but there's really no point in arguing that point with you. Such a narrow mind, and thorough lack of understanding of how the world's screwed together. Good luck to us all if we elect people you support. But what is your solution? Can you intelligently articulate that? Instead of one-liners and complaints, I'd sincerely enjoy reading your plan to save our country, through your conservative mind. And please don't simply repeat your tax break/stimulus comment above, but truly put some intellectual thought into what might truly work to get America back on track. I'm anxious to read. Thanks.

GazetteOnline.com : The latest on the Iowa men's basketball coaching search

I fully agree Stark. I think I posted here a week ago that Barta had a dilemma if he let Lick go, that being that he'd have a "mess" for the next 2-3 years, merely continuing the mess we've been in for some years now....better to give Todd another year + to prove that he couldn't do it....he didn't do that and now it's water over the dam to talk about why Lick should have had another year. But we're not going to see anything fun in the Iowa BB world until 2012 at the earliest, regardless of who we get. And it's unrealistic to think we'll get anyone out there who's a Top 10 major college coach. We'll get someone from a mid-major (like Lick was 3 yrs ago) who's world will be 360 degrees different once they step foot in the Big Ten/Iowa City (like Lick's was, and BJ's will be) . Get used to cheering for wrestling during the winter for a few more years.

I'd agree on your Alford point, DJ. I guess perhaps I meant that firing Davis was bone-headed. There was great energy around Alford though, you're right. Sorry about the 2 point mistake on the UNLV game :-)

And that Elite Eight should have been a Final Four team...we led by 20 at halftime and lost in the final seconds/minute. But anyway, Acie is right... It doesn't really matter what you do, it's all about winning. Lick will win at Iowa, eventually. It's only a Q of when. Are we Iowans able to hang on until that comes around again? I am. Not sure Barta or the the big donors are. But it's Barta's call. Hope he gets it right, because we've had some bone-head decisions made on BB coaches since Davis' firing....

GazetteOnline.com : Iowa recruits express frustration with coaching situation

I realize this is a tough decision, and situation. My gut tells me we need to give Lick 2 more years. If I were Barta, I'd be thinking both short-term and long-term. Short-term, letting Lick go gives me at best status-quo for the next 2-3 yrs. I.e. "a mess". Long-term, if I believe that Lick has the core - and can keep it at Iowa - and the recruits to supplement that core, you have to keep him. I won't get better results by letting him go now. I also wonder just what role Lick's health is truly playing in this matter. Many of us who post here have expressed that "Lick should show more fire in the belly, get off the bench and high-five the kids as they dive into the crowd for a rebount...blah blah..." But if you'd been through what he's been through over the past 5 months - including what we don't know - you'd have to ask if that's even possible? That's not a reason to keep a coach who's job is to win games (and isn't doing so), but neither is it a reason to fire a coach if we can agree that there are other ways to win games than by being a cheerleader from the bench as a head coach. I think there are....I'd give him 2 more years to fully prove that his plan, players, and strategy are either on track, or a disaster.

GazetteOnline.com : New Kinnick banners celebrate Orange Bowl win

I now live in Europe, having grown up in E. Iowa. I see 3-4 games a year live in Kinnick. I probably spend $2-3000 in my home state every year, mainly due to the Hawkeye football program. Does the tax money I leave behind pay for that banner? Of course not. But if you take me x a few 1000, including IowaAlumn and so on, I think it comes home again, many times over. Onemore, I took a pay cut this past year too and lost 25% of my colleagues. All of that really has nothing to do with this banner, or the Iowa Football program. Someone's downfall is always someone else's win. That's life. Iowa football will always be a money-maker. It has nothing to do with 'real jobs' vs 'playing a game'. That 'game' is a business, again, like it or not. And I would argue that the Hawks, like a lot of your so-called "real jobs", also "make a difference" in many people's lives. I'm happy for that.
