16 years ago @ Race Relations Project - What about health care? · 0 replies · +1 points

Yes I think health care should be a equal rights between everyone, Especially for the legal immigrants because that would not be fair to them. Everyone gets sick or injured sometime during their lives and they should have the right to see a doctor and get taken care of. I think whenever a person is denied a doctor or for care that is murder, and doctors job is to help people and save lives, that like contradicting what they believe in and all the education they receive. And for what? So they can tell someone they can't help them because they don't have health care. Plus, think of it this way, what if an immigrant (legal or illegal) becomes very ill with a sickness that is extremely contagious and they go to the doctor to seek help and to be cure before the disease or sickness gets out of control and spread throughout the body. Then they get to the doctor and finds out that there is nothing that can be done to help this person, so they send this person back home, either in a cab, or they get on the buses and trains to get home, surrounding themselves with people who are healthy and not sick. Because this one person cannot get treatment for his sickness he is likely to spread his contagious disease to innocent healthy people, (citizens or not, with healthcare or not). Putting more families in debt and in danger of spreading this disease as well, when all of this could have been avoided in the beginning. And because of this, doctors will become over worked and probably underpaid, and getting less sleep at night or probably not sleeping at all, which could lead to them making a mistake on another patient because their bodies are not functioning right because of lack of rest.

And what about innocent babies and children that, they do not understand how not to get sick and to avoid catching a disease, so does that mean they should be denied to and not help! I would like to know where is the sympathy, especially in America "all men are create equal". If I were a person who determine who gets health care and who don't I would feel extremely terrible knowing that everyone don't have the same rights especially for something that is between life or death because this is exactly what this between "life and death" because people have died because of lack of health care and people will continue to die if something is not done about this. The people in control really need to think about their actions and really put people's lives and family members into consideration because this is not cool.

I think that in poorer countries, where they have limited health care for the people who was already born and raised there should come up with a system that distribute the health care so only when someone becomes very ill and really need to see a doctor and can seek help. I don't know that was just and idea. But this is a really hard topic to discuss because this is so important to people and their lives and their children lives and so forth. I just feel like this is our world and we all need to come together and work out a system they will allow for people to have some sort of health care and not have to worry about if they will die and how they are going to pay back loans and bills for something that should already be given to them.

I think being a woman is being completely happy with yourself and how you look. If you take away body image I think women of all shapes, sizes and cultures still have their dignity, femininity and self pride, and for most women they can still have children. I think nowadays body image plays a important role in females lives because many women and young girls want to look like the women on the cover of magazines and they think they need to look like them. I think its so ironic because most of the women in the magazines do not even look like that themselves, they are airbrush and photo-shopped so that they can look flawless, thinner and more sexy.

Hollywood women make it so hard for other women (poor, rich, black, handicap, sick women) to look like them, and I don't understand why people want to look like other women anyway. I think what a lot of women fail to realize is that Hollywood woman get paid to look like that (skinny, malnourished). Or they have professional people who work with them, train their bodies, exercise with them and keep them motivated to loose weight and eat healthy. Poor women and women who are not as wealthy as Hollywood women basically starve themselves to loose weight and they put their bodies in more danger.

Its seems that Hollywood women portray all women because so many women look up to them and honor their bodies and beauty. And it seems that appearance is very important to Hollywood women so when they get plastic surgery done like breast implants, nose jobs, lip implants, and so on, women that watch them and admire them on television think that is OK to do the same thing as well, not recognizing the side effects and damage they will be doing to their bodies.

I believe that if every woman in Hollywood kept their same figure from when they first got recognized and famous and blow up into this amazing actress, model, rapper, singer and so on, it would be a whole lot easier for women to except how they look and not want to changed their bodies around to fit a society norm. The idea that being thin, tall, and with long beautiful hair is the only type of way to be sexy and have sex appeal. Besides all women are not build to look a certain way, many times a woman natural facial features is best the way they are, and then when they go and get a plastic surgery things don't go well and they end up not liking the results because the results don't fit their facial features. If women were not always constantly judge by the looks and appearance we all will be happy and satisfied just the way we are.

Well first off I will like to say that u do not look white to me, I can most definitely tell that you is Hispanic. But my advice to you will be to go with what you feel most comfortable identifying as, whether its white or Puerto Rican. Since you said you grew up with your mother who is Hispanic will obviously must identify more with your mother side of your family, which is understandable.

I don't think Sam of ask you questions about what it is like being on the white team, even though you is half white, I think he should have ask you what is it like being on the mix team. Sam have his ways, and I think with his amount a experience with people and their race and ethnicity he might feel that it is okay for him to ask you a question like that? And I mean technically he is not wrong because you have white in you but he could have chosen his word choice better in the question. Not to take up for him or you, but I can say that you probably would have be able to answer that question easily had you grown up with your father and not your mother.

In class I can only imagine how you must feel having to decide which team you is on, whether you is on the "brown team" or the "white team", I bet that is frustrating. And you right, Sam really do not give mix people in the class a fair opportunity to pick a side. I can also understand why many people think you are white when they see you because of your skin color but like I said before, by look at this video I can tell you is not "completely" white because you look like you can be mixed with another race. And although Sam did mention that it would be extremely for him to pick out the mix people because of all the different ways someone can be mix white and something else or black and something, I do think that he should at least touch on it so that they do not feel left out and have to choose.

For example, I know my little have this problem all the time because or father is black and her mother is white, but when you look at her she look like she is Hispanic, and I know it is hard for her to cope or "decide" which race she should be when she is around a certain group of people. So I don't think its just same choosing "white team" and "black/brown team", I feel like society as a whole do the same thing as well.

I agree with her, I also think that saying "bleeding" is a bad way to talk about periods or a woman's menstrual cycle. I know when I think of bleeding I think of somebody being hurt and rushed to hospital or crippled. And having a period is not crippling at all. I also can understand why she is happy for having her period. Like she said at least she know that she is fertile and is able to have children, and I think that right there is a good enough reason, because there is a lot of women in this world that cannot have children and they wish they can.

To me I think having a period is a good thing for woman's bodies because it cleanses on insides and the old blood and toxins is being released from our bodies. Having a period is just part of being a woman, just like having sperm is part of being a man. However I do not understand why many girls are embarrass to talk about having their periods because it is a normal thing to have, I would be worried and not talk about it if I didn't have it. I think woman needs to be proud of having periods because, for one it's going to be with us for most of our natural lives.

Guys also need to learn how to be more open about talking about periods and being around when woman talk about their periods and not leave the room, because for one, if and when a guy gets married to a beautiful woman, she will also have her period and there is probably nothing worse than having a man/husband who don't know anything a woman's menstrual cycle. Plus I don't get it, what is soooo gross about it? Everyone has seen blood before in their lifetimes more than enough. But I do want to give shouts to the guys that are educated and don't mind talking about periods and even the guys who like to have sex with their girlfriends while she is on her period.

And another thing, this is really random, but in my discussion group I had a thought and I ask, what do you think women in third world countries do while they are on their periods, since they don't have pad and tampons like we do here in America?

I know that when I was growing up I had two older sisters and they always had they "girl talk" with me, so I was excited! I couldn't wait until I was old enough to get my period. I thought that the girls that already had their periods before me were so cool and more mature than me. And I am also "bleeding" RIGHT NOW, haha.

Yea well I think we all noticed this, but who fault is that? It is obviously more white people in the class than black and color people! When a black person saw something races or offensive on the screen we chose to make noises and say crap about it, and white people have the same choice to moan and groan about something they thought was offensive and races, they chose to be quite. And I understand most white people feel that they shouldn't get offensive because y'all are the majority but no one in class is forcing you to be quite or threatening you if you u speak up. And to be honest I saw some white people shake their heads and suck their teeth when something offensive was up about black people, so why can't they do that for their own race? Or maybe they did and I missed it. But whatever, my point is we all should have heard a louder groans when offensive stuff was posted about white since y'all are the majority and I didn't.

And yes of course black and color people are going to say stuff and be loud when seeing offensive stuff posted because we (our ancestors) had to struggle, be beaten, be sold, for a living. So I y'all DON'T expect us to be quite. Plus some of us might (even though we wouldn't want to admit it) truly do feel inferior to white people. Therefore that feeling of anger is sometimes expressed in some way, shape or form.

Another thing, I think that whole poll thing is not really accurate anyway, because when only white people are suppose to respond, I see and I know black people comment as well, and when only black people are suppose to respond some white people be commenting too just to get people hyped up and upset. Which I think is really lame and immature. So it is really hard to tell when something is really being honest or when someone is being a jerk, which is really sad because I think the whole poll idea thing is really good. It just sucks that some people don't take it serious. However I do believe that some people are telling the truth and expressing how they really feel on the polls and I applaud them for that because it is hard to be honest about race in front of a class that is so diverse.

And not to mention that I don't think all the offensive comments are jokes because I am pretty sure that there are a few or maybe a lot of racist people in our class, who just takes advantage of the fact that their responses are anonymous.

16 years ago @ Race Relations Project - This Is Getting to Be ... · 1 reply · +1 points

OOOOOk so this video really just pissed me off. Like I really don't know if all of this was a practical joke gone wrong or if people is just really bored and stupid and don't have nothing better to do with their lives. I was really mad at the fact that someone hung a noose up in their school library. And honestly at first I thought that it probably was a white person who hung the noose, because to me it just doesn't make sense for a black person to do it. When they mention that a black person did hang the noose I was very baffled, how can someone be races against their own race? Naww that can't be possible. This is why I think that maybe this was a joke to cause some chaos on campus and start some trouble with the other students. But then I don't know, maybe this person really is racist and thought that this was best way to get his party started. You never know. And I don't even want to know how people would have reacted if a white person came forward and said that he hung the noose in the library. But like David said color really do not matter in this situation, it is the action that was matter.

And the whole thing about people dressing "ghetto" is stupid too. I think at this point the student are just trying to make each other really mad and frustrated at each other, because they know one group of people will react a certain way to whatever racist thing that they do. I don't want to say that I don't take this serious, because this is not cool. But another part of me just feel like this is a game of what race is the most clever to come up with something cool, jaw dropping and racist to do so that they can get some attention from it, because it is obvious working now.

The fact that the reporter keep saying that it is minority students that is causing all this trouble just makes me think that they think it is alright and cool to be involved with these actions. And they are not making the black people on campus look so hot either. I would be mad if I went to this school and all this was happening and come to find out that it is the minorities that is causing this.

And I don't understand why they are interview these two people in this video, they should the two people, the one that hung the noose in the library and the black fraternity guy on here, asking them, what were they thinking when they were doing these things? This would have been more interesting! And just ask them questions to see if they really feel some type of way about races. Because I personally think that interviewing these to people is not going to do anything, solve anything or help people understand why these guys did what they did.

I think a black person doing the application process will pick the person best suited for the job. Because being a black person they probably know the struggle that black people have, and the struggle that they been through to get where they are at now. I personally do not think that a smart black business person will pick a black person over a white person, just because he or she is black. Me personally being a black woman, if a black person is lacking a certain still or is not as on top of their game as I need them to be for the time being I will hired the person who is more skillful, whether the other people is white, Chinese, Hispanic, Indian etc.

However I do think that there are some black people out there who will definitely hire a white person over a black person. And the only reasons I can think of for why they would do that is because, they probably think that having white employees will enhance their business and give them a "good look". Or because a white person looked out for them, so they probably feel that they owe white people something. Or they probably think that white people attract more people, which more than likely mean more money, and more success.

I don't necessarily think that it is wrong or unfair for a black person to hire a white person over a black person. But if the resume and the application of the white person and the black person is completely the same, and me being black i would definitely hire the black person, because I would not have a good enough reason to not hire them. I think when people only hired people based off of their race that affects the work industry today, because if I hire a black person who is not qualified for the job and do not have the stills to be good worker, I am slowing up my business and missing out the people who would be perfect for the job and really make a difference for the business. And I fell like nowadays people do that a lot, they feel like they have to "look out" for their people and "hook them up" and this is for all races!

I also think black people who do the application process, probably feel like it is the "right" thing to pick the white person because if he or she don't, they probably get accuse of being racist by only hiring the black person. I think that if it really comes down to black and white during the application process, with people who have the same resumes they should just keep going back and forth, when a white person quit the job hire a black person for they spot, when that person get laid off or quit hired a white person, that way the job setting will be more diverse.

16 years ago @ Race Relations Project - LGBT Class: Question Six · 0 replies · +1 points

I think lesbians are more accept by people because lesbians are HOT!!! Lesbians are sexy and is every straight guys fancy to be sexually active with a lesbian couple haha. But on a more serious note I think lesbians are more accepting because it is very hard sometimes to tell if a girl is a lesbian or not, especially if she is not butch. Then she would look like just a "regular" girl. With gay guys it is different because in society a guy is look at to be manly, masculine and macho, so if a guy comes off too feminine he is look at as gay, and what I heard some people say "a waste of some good meat". I think with gay males people fine it harder to understand why a guy would want to be with another guy.
I also think that sometimes gay men express themselves (like the way they talk and dress) is too much for people to handle.
On the other hand, sometimes I think that gay men are more accepted than lesbians by other women (straight women). I have notice that straight women find it very easy and comforting to become friends with gay men. Matter of fact I think some women are in love with gay men, I sometimes find that relationship very weird but cool sometimes.
And vice versa, I think that straight guys find it very easy to be friends with lesbians, especially butch lesbians. Some guys like to play basketball them, drink with them, find girls with them, talk about sex with them, and go to butch lesbians for advice with their girlfriends problems. So maybe it's equally accepting between the sexes. Because there is those straight guys who thinks that lesbians are stealing all the girls from them, which I find hilarious. Then there are straight girls who think that gay men are nasty and disgusting.
Between older generations vs. our younger generation now, I think those older generations no matter what find it very hard to accept homosexuality period, because in their day it was secretive and rarely talked about. I know when I talked to my grandmother about homosexuality she was very uncomfortable. But nowadays young people are becoming more open with their sexuality and more accepting of homosexuality. From my experience I have noticed that people now have basically became supportive of homosexuality because they have friends and family members who have came out of the closet, so they felt the need to be there for them and not walk out of their life. In general, I think people no matter what would be accepting to lesbians and gay men for their own personal reason or not be accepting. I think it have a lot to do with how a person was raised and/or their own personal beliefs and morals.

16 years ago @ Race Relations Project - Why Is the Conversatio... · 0 replies · +1 points

To go off of this video, I agree that whenever people discuss the relations between black and white people it always goes back to slavery. But who is it to blame for that. In our generation, growing up and going to school and learning about other races and ethnicities, slavery is like the first thing we learn about. In history, in American history, in African American history, in social studies, in all of these classes I have taken in the public school system, slavery would be the hot topic for half a report card period. I honestly think that slavery divided us as a human society. I also think that because of slavery, this is why some or even most people are racist. Even though slavery ended between blacks and whites years ago many people still feel the effect that it have brought on the community as a whole. Why? Because all our life we (black people) have been taught about slavery, and what the "white man" did to us, and how we had to suffer, and how they raped us, and beat us and starved us and hanged us to death.
And now a days when we all get together and talk about the differences between black and white, some white people may feel that, "well we had nothing to do with that and I'm not racist so whatever", or some white people may really feel and think they understand our point of view, or some white people may feel bad that their people can do such a thing to another group people, but we don't know that.
And yes the Civil Rights Movement sparked up some great action and put African Americans in the "spot light" for a while, but I think if it was with any other race of people and not blacks, than they would have probably did the same thing.
I think that it is good that the conversation always goes back to slavery when ever black and white people have a discussion about race, because then at least we recognize it, we all know that it happen, we all know that it was a terrible thing to happen to African Americans, well at least I hope so. And now we all can express ourselves get out what we want to say, and what we think is important for every else to hear, from all our points of views. I think discussion groups about race are a huge step for some people. Just showing up can be a hassle, but to talk about blacks and whites, with black and white people in the same room is a big deal. I guess now we think that "slavery" is over but it's really not completely over, and I mean for ANY race not just African Americans!

16 years ago @ Race Relations Project - Racism Looks Pretty Mi... · 0 replies · +1 points

WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!! Now that is intense right there! I would never imagine that racism occurred like that just in 2004! Like I'm really speechless right now. For this to professional Soccer, you would think that people would know better and know how to act in public. I can only imagine how the players felt, to have to go through this torture while playing a game that they love, wait forget I said game, while trying to achieve and be the best in their career. To have bananas being thrown at you, to be spit on, to be called racial slurs, that have to really hurt. And I can understand why the player lost their tempers and was ready to attack back.

What I think is even more unbelievable, is that these people know that the games are being played on national TV, and they still think it is okay for them to act like that. Its makes me wonder where did this wild behavior come from? Why do they think that they are doing nothing wrong? And why their government allowing for this to happen?

I refuse to believe that people are born this way! That a human being can be sooooo openly violent and races to another human being! Is it that Soccer so important to them that they feel the need to, in every way possible distract, and manipulate the other components like that. Are they really just trying to do everything in their to help their team win and or possible lose by being so disrespectful. I'm sorry but this is just really hard for me to wrap my head around this video clip.

And then the coach, that took the cake for me! How can a coach act like that towards his own players? One of his best players at that! And for him to think that it wasn't gone get around, that the other player wasn't going to say anything! People are crazy. Not to mention that he didn't even think he did anything wrong. I do not even live in Europe or never been there, but this madness has to stop. It is 2010 now, I do not know what have been done to improve this continent but I hope and pray that it is not like how it was back in 2004.

For the people in Europe that saw this video clip and saw their faces, I hope it scarred them for life, I hope it open up their eyes for them to see how the world should not act in a public space; I hope they feel stupid and worthless. But I also hope that they will learn, and change, and become better people, so that they can help raise the next generation of Soccer fans how to act. To teach them that racism is not a cool, beautiful or nice thing. But that it is not necessary, that it hurts people and that it will bring terrible karma.
