Gotcha... so even IF "J" didn't exist yet, then where is this other Law that David talks about?

Just playing devil's advocate here, but couldn't the writer of Leviticus (under the JEDP theory) have seen all this stuff about "The Law" in the OT and decided he was going to write something after the fact that just LOOKED canonical (ala Gospel of Thomas, etc.)?

Harsh but true... though I'm not sure I entirely agree with the line about going to a church that will kick you out. I do, however, agree with the general sentiment that they need to call out sin and keep their members accountable. I wish my church was better about this.

http://www.youseedrybones.com/ : So Many Bibles. So Little Time

While I'll tend to read whatever version is in front of me at the time, my preference is to hop onto BibleGateway.com and hop back and forth between a literal and a paraphrase version. Usually this means NIV and The Message. NIV because it's the obligatory literal translation (though I'm not otherwise attached to it; if you have better recommendations, lemme hear 'em), and The Message, because I love the plain English way it puts things (I often find myself finally understanding passages I didn't quite 'get' in other versions, as well as looking at old familiars in a whole new light). The reason for this is because I find that sometimes literal versions will lose important ideas in the translation over to English, and paraphrase versions are prone to the translators' opinion (at least more so than literal versions). Literal versions are less prone (but not immune) to opinion. Paraphrases bring over important concepts from Scripture that usually get lost in translation in the literal versions. Next to actually being able to read Greek and Hebrew, I believe that studying several different translations is the best way to understand what the original text is trying to communicate.

http://www.youseedrybones.com/ : Prayer Fail

It's kinda cliche, but I just talk to him like he's standing right there next to me. I don't bow my head, close my eyes, and go into "talking mode" with my friends... we just start talking. I think the same goes with talking to God. Except, I usually keep the conversation relatively telepathic, lest people around me start to get weirded out.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Smoking or not smoking, definitely one of those two.

I think what the passage is essentially saying is... a) don't judge people based on something as trivial as food, and b) don't offend people and shot-block the potential for a Christ-centered community with something as trivial as your food choices. One could argue that the general sentiment of the passage could be applied to smoking as well... a) don't judge people based on something as trivial as smoking, b) don't offend people and shot-block the potential for a Christ-centered community by smoking around people who dislike it.

http://www.youseedrybones.com/ : Book Review: Free Book*

In all seriousness, this kind of worries me. Is this book related to the citywide series that a bunch of churches are participating in? Because the my church is going to be participating in it... and while I've always found my church to be theologically acceptable in the past, I've also always kept an eye out for the weird stuff that comes with being a "Cincinnati style church" as Don put it. Aesthetically, we resemble a lot of theologically bad churches. It would be really easy for them to take the whole "servant evangelism" and "outward focused" stuff to a "salvation by works" extreme. So far, everything has stayed centered on Jesus and the cross, but I always try to stay cautious of the potential for this sort of thing.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Caring too much about failure.

I just started a project where I'm going to be writing and posting a song onto YouTube every week, no matter how I feel about it. I'm going to post the first song this weekend, and I'm already having apprehensions about it... I keep thinking that it's too lame, or that no one will like it. But you know what? I really needed to read this post... fear of embarrassment is a pretty crappy excuse not to try something. Even if you're not artistic in any way, I would encourage everyone reading this to try something like this with one of their gifts... take your talent and make yourself do something risky with it on a regular scheduled basis, with no regard to whether you fail or not. I'm really hoping my project will help me learn how to stare failure in the face and tell it to take a hike. Maybe something similar will help you too. Thanks Jon, for yet another awesome Serious Wednesday. As always, it's exactly what I needed to hear.

I kinda already knew this about one of my 'things', but I didn't really think to apply it to another one of my 'things'. (Was that vague enough for you?) This served as some awesome confirmation and realization in what I'm supposed to be doing with my life. Thank you thank you thank you My only complaint is that you threw my internal calendar off... after reading this, I assumed it was Serious Wednesday.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Looking for Goliath.

I agree that a "big thing" isn't necessarily the top 1%. For me, a big thing would be seeing some of my non-Christian friends become Christian, seeing the kids I teach at church turn around and disciple others... and even a few non-churchy things, like make a feature length movie (doesn't have to be big budget) or start a band (doesn't have to get famous). The trick is recognizing the fact that doing "big things" don't necessarily mean doing things that are noticed by huge numbers of people. It means successfully doing something you've dreamed of and felt called to do.
