When one person owns all the railroads, then you can't just start up a competing railroad. When someone owns all the diamond mines, or iron mines, you can't just start up a competing operation without having funding of a country or an army. The free market only behaves freely when there is a regulation making sure that there are diverse suppliers and diverse customers. If there supplier is limited to one, then they are free to maximally squeeze every dollar out of their customers until they rebel and force an end to the monopoly.
