Race Relations Project : What about health care?

I think that everyone should be offered healthcare, regardless of your social status. Some people may be really hard workers and have a job that doesn’t supply healthcare. Today it is even harder because things cost a lot more, and if you have three kids you will want to have healthcare to take care of them. Sometimes families really struggle and even if you work really hard just to take care of your family and supply food and everything you possibly want to. I think healthcare should be offered to everyone that at least tries but they are just struggling, and anyone who really needs it.

Race Relations Project : 300,000! What's it mean to me...to us?

I think that people just move on with their life’s and forget about things like this, because maybe they feel there isn’t anything they can do. Sometimes people may feel too busy with their lives like with all the tragedies we have every year people may just feel it’s not possible to save everyone. So they just give up. I think that it is worth every effort to try to save as many life’s as possible, even if you think it can’t be done. It is definitely worth the try and I think if we had more helping hands we would be able to save more lives at a time.

Race Relations Project : Letter from an Inmate

I think that it is really good that this guy wrote to our class and I’m sure he feels guilt for what he has done. I don’t think that we should always think prisoners are bad people because some of them may just be there for drugs, I mean everyone is different and everyone makes mistakes in life. We all try our best to live life the best we can and I will never know why people could be so bad and want to kill someone, but whatever the reason is. I think that even people in prison do have some kind of love, but I think they don’t realize it until after they are in prison and then they are like oh wow I really messed up in life.

I mean yeah you could feel bad for someone being in prison but really do you think you should they are the ones who choose to kill someone and knew the consequences to it, so it’s like if you actually think you were going to kill someone and get away with it especially today with all the DNA testing and things we could do you should think again. There are some seriously sick people in this world and I’m not trying to say that the guy who wrote to our class doesn’t feel bad for what he had done but it’s like if you don’t kill people we wouldn’t have to put people in prison. So in a way a lot of the suffering is the persons own problem we could feel sorry but when they take the life of someone else away why should we feel guilty for those who want to take the life of others.

I think that it was really great that guy wrote a letter to the class, because we all have feelings to express and I think it is good that prisoners can write to people. Your way of thinking can go several ways though you may be like yeah what he wrote you can tell he has a heart, but you have to also think since he had mentioned he was committed with murder. Whoever it was that the family of that person the amount of suffering they are going through and the mourning, how do they feel? So is it fair that whoever it is in prison that even the guy who wrote to us he took away someone’s life and not that he mentioned there age or anything but what if it was some kid say 15 or something that could have had a life to live if it wasn’t taken away by someone else. Then that’s when you have to question should you feel any resent for prisoners that took away a life of someone else.

Race Relations Project : The tyranny of radical Muslims...

I think that it is really upsetting what Osama Bin laden did and it is not fair that we should be against Islam. I think that just because of what he thought of America, doesn’t mean that everyone thinks that in his country. It is just so terrible that we have to fight over oil and maybe eventually we will all realize it’s not worth it to kill so many lives. One day I hope for there to be no war in the world and we will have peace. I think that we may one day realize we are all the same just because we have different beliefs doesn’t mean anything, it’s all the same.

Race Relations Project : What is the end goal...really?

I think that the end goal could be that one day we will all find that we are the same. This is true yes we are all going to die someday, but there’s a lot you can do in life to make a difference during your lifetime. I feel that one day everyone will feel that we have accomplished the goal to race relations and we will be able to celebrate and one day maybe everything in the world that is bad will end. I think we will reach our goal even if it’s not soon but even 200 years from now I think it is possible.

Race Relations Project : Women

We are all equal women are just as equal as men and I feel that we should get treated the same and I think that magazines should stop making women look so good. I think that we all look great no matter what your race is women are women and I think that we are all in some way beautiful, I think that women try too hard sometimes to look good we don’t need to try hard were naturally beautiful and I think we could all say that. So when women look in the mirror they need to remember that and not try to feel like they need to look like some girl in a magazine or like someone in Hollywood, they aren’t natural like real people they probably had plastic surgery a bunch of times and they have professional people do there makeup and everything for them.

Race Relations Project : Women

I think that we just need to accept ourselves for what we are, women always get put down for this men never get an image like how they are suppose to look or never lowers there self esteem. I think that men should have to look a certain way or feel like they need to like women do and I think that we all should feel beautiful. I think that the media looks way too far into it and they make women in magazines fake and I don’t think women need to be fake to be good enough for society. I think that we should believe that we are beautiful no matter what we look like, if we didn’t have flaws, we wouldn’t be real and I think that would be a bad thing because when you look at the girls in magazines every part of them is perfect. I don’t think this is fair to women that it makes us feel that we need to look a certain way.

Race Relations Project : Women

I think she has a good point in the video that were women and were all beautiful. I think that sometimes like people from Hollywood and in magazines are the images we want to believe what we should look like. As if women should have perfect bodies but this can’t be realistic for everyone I mean if we all looked the same I’m sure we would get bored with everyone looking the same right .I think that there is too much emphasis put on how women should have perfect bodies and I think that magazines make women feel less then what they should. I don’t think women should feel that they need to have perfect bodies it ruins there self esteem and we all want to always look like those women in magazines, but is it ideal is it what society thinks is realistic for everyone.

Race Relations Project : What might be the second step?

I don’t think that people thought there is a step two I think we just don’t what to do because we all want to stop this but we would have to do some really serious work like talking billions of people working together to stop it. I think that people see that as impossible because we would never get all the help we need to stop this. I think that everyone would love to help but it’s just something you have to look so deep into with so much work and you would need a lot of time as well too and like over a 20 year life span to completely free all the slaves and this may still not do anything.

I think that everyone should take this class as an elective while they are here at Penn State and I think that a lot of what he says could help us in life and you think about things like how cell phones are made by slaves and it makes you think like should I not have a cell phone and even the video about chocolate he showed us its like are we just not suppose to eat it or anything how do we know what’s right to do. Because if it was just one thing to do and it would stop slavery then I think people would try to do it but since it’s so much effort I think that you would need to do a lot of work to stop it and I think that he knows what he is talking about most of the time and I really like sitting in this class. I think that if everyone really listened to what Sam says they would all get something out of his class but a lot of people just don’t care and are just there to take the class and then leave and don’t care what they get out of it.

I think that Sam has told us a lot of things that make you think in his class and some of It was pretty interesting and informative this semester. I never really thought about all the things he talks about until I had this class I think it is good he is trying to make us see things and realize what happens and how bad of a world we live in. I think that this is a really good class and that I learned a lot from it. I got a lot out of this class It changes your whole entire view on things. Sometimes it makes you feel like you can teach other people about things you learned in class and then you can make other people realize and maybe eventually you would have everyone working together making a difference in the world. I definitely feel this class is worth my time and I would recommend it to friends and anyone who would ask me about it. I think that Sam is a good teacher and he always talks about how his personal experiences changed his life and the way he thinks about things and I think that this is really great.

Race Relations Project : What About Multiracial People?

I think that this was a really good question that made you think of how Sam identifies people in class. I think you should just go with whatever you feel comfortable with. Unless it comes off as offensive to you, you should just go with what you feel you should if you always identified yourself as Hispanic then, you should be comfortable with that if that’s something you grew up with or if prefer to be identified as white, then you can do that too. I think that this could be confusing for everyone, so don’t feel bad I don’t even know everything I even am myself, just feel as if your accepted as both, which I am sure you are.

Race Relations Project : Isn't a person's qualifications an issue?

I think that this is a really good question, because if you’re using affirmative action to get into college for medical school and you shouldn’t be there because you should not have gotten in. Then that’s a pretty risky thing, because if you’re a doctor and you mess something up in the hospital you can cause someone to lose their life if you doing surgery. I think that this could be a good or bad thing depending on the situation and I think that especially when it comes to medical school that they should be extra careful about it and especially if you’re going to be something like a surgeon or something like that type of doctor.

Race Relations Project : Nothing About the Census is Easy

I don’t think the census has put enough thought into how they can change this to make it better for people and how to go about making sure no one feels left out. I think that they could come up with a better way to make the forms less confusing and to make sure no one feels that they are offended or left out in the count I think that they could try to make everyone feel equal if they research this enough.I think that they need to just not take it so serious sometimes I mean when people read Negro. It doesn’t mean that we think they should be identified that way, they just want to include everyone and try to make everyone happy and not be racist, maybe in the future we will eventually come up with a good system to make the census work. And everyone will be able to check or put a race down to make sure everyone gets counted, I hope that one day this will work and everyone will be able to answer a race on the census.

I don’t think the census will ever be able to make everyone happy and when you think about it its kind of crazy when you realize that one simple piece of paper can upset so many people and have such big controversial issues over it. I think that even if they made the census with every race in it that they would still have problems and you would have people unhappy and even more confused than they already are. So maybe they would want to come up with a whole new different way of making the census or maybe in years to come they will make the census every twenty years. So maybe it would be easier to count everyone and things would change a lot more then in ten years. Instead of the way they do the census now, maybe they could just have people write in their race instead of having check boxes. Maybe people would find that if they could write in their race that no one was left out in the count.

I can understand why people got upset about the word Negro being on the census, because things have changed so much over recent years. Since we have so many races I think it can be confusing especially if you are a little bit of a few different races. I think people should be happy about the fact that the word negro was still kept in the census because if it was taken away you would still have people complaining that it isn’t recognized anymore as a race so that would make people upset as well, so it’s like if they keep it there you have people complaining and if they take it away you have them complaining both ways and people are still unhappy.

Race Relations Project : If men could menstruate...

If men could menstruate I do not think that tampons would be free, but I think that it would be something we cared about a lot less. Men buy condoms and they are not free, which is a good thing to argue about because it’s something a man uses you would think they would be free right? So maybe we aren’t so unfair to gender when it comes to this. Maybe we never thought about it that way, so should tampons be free for girls and condoms be free for guys. This is something we could think about when it comes back to gender.
