we had a surplus of corn and have been using it to make grocery sacks from cornstarch and packing "peanuts" that were biodegradable - long before the food/fuel debates. This was partly because of research efforts funded by corn growers to support the market. Now research is progressing in ethanol production from corn stalks etc. and grasses.
