segwayne.com : Finally! A semi-valid argument against the Mac...

I respectfully submit that it would be rather hard for a marketing department to target a man who openly refers to himself as "apathy man", but again, your points are well taken. As for myself, you know my history and why I became a Mac convert in the first place. Now that I'm "in", I retrospectively feel like I'm SO relieved to not have to deal with Windows constant {bleep} that it's easy to become "enthusiastic" about anything Apple coming down the pipe. Is that a cult thing? Maybe. Well, ok, yeah, sounds a little culty, but "in every revolution, there is one man with a vision". Kool-aid anyone? Wayne

I totally agree with you. Sometimes people do want a bologna sandwich as opposed to a steak, but that falls under the whole "why would I buy a Mac when I can buy a $2 Dell/Gateway box" argument. .. and there's nothing wrong with that. The things I do with a computer tend to make using a Windows box rather infuriating, even with the same software on both. Take, for example, Adobe Fireworks. Same package, same version loaded on both my MacBook Pro and the eight-core, dual processor Xeon PC at work. The Macintosh version is -- for some unfathomable reason -- just easier to use, not to mention twice as fast.. That's just a matter of the operating system being designed more like my mind works than the Windows platform ever has been. Then again, with everything I went through with the PC and Microsoft in particular, I just cannot fathom giving them another single dime of my money. Is Apple any better or more scrupulous? Probably not. They're a big company and every bit as territorial as Microsoft but to me, they make the better OS, and for me, I'd rather wait for the steak than settle for the bologna. Hope all is well and thanks for stopping by. Wayne

segwayne.com : iPad's impact on Macbook sales (??)

Why be sorry? I needed one. I bought one. BestBuy has a 30 day return policy, so there's always the chance that I'll be able to upgrade. If not, no biggie at all. It does exactly what I need, and the price was right, so we're good to go.

segwayne.com : Macbook Pro 13" MB (MB991LL/A) -- The Unboxing

Sorry to hear about the Compaq. Aside from the initial thought, I haven\\\'t really even thought about selling the netbook since buying the macbook. I suppose considering the bigger SSD and extra RAM, $250 would be a fair price. I\\\'ll even throw in the USB holding the install software. The one thing I don\\\'t have for it is a Windows install CD. It came with Ubuntu installed, and I have that CD, but it\\\'s at home right now.

True, but with computers, I always tend to feel that if I waited for "the next thing", I'd be waiting forever. Besides, if anything new comes out within 30 days, I can always take it back and swap it out (if whatever's there is that great)

segwayne.com : Apple's new iPad and why it's a qualified FAIL..

You bring up a good point.. I wonder though whether that leaves the door open for someone to build a "webcam adapter" (like some little clip to attach one of those older Logitech round-type "eyeball" cams) which would allow the camera angle to be moved, rotated, and such to fix the problem of angle? I have a $500 credit hopefully coming from the Best Buy trade in program, so if I can resist buying a new Macbook pro, my iPad should be "free" (as opposed to having a 3 year old iMac unused on my desk) so I think I'm still interested, just disappointed at the moment.. As for drinking to cover up your ideas, I'm of the opinion that it's the night owl life you live. I think we're all convinced you're living life as a vampire. A particularly apathetic vampire, but a vamp nonetheless.. :) Wayne

I'm sure some other enterprising young company will come up with a stylus for exactly that reason. The one thing I could see that might be handy with the iPad would be a "paper pad" application where you could just walk into a meeting and start making hand-written notes (or in my case doodling when you're bored)...

I'd have to agree. Apple's system for the App store is very "Wal-mart" in principal, but it's more on the scale of death by a thousand paper cuts. Each iPhone user supposedly spends about $5.00 a month on applications for their phone, of which Apple keeps 30%. The programmer of each App gets the other 70%. While 70/30 may sound insane, it's exactly what Amiga Inc was trying to do. Only difference is, Amiga Inc didn't actually want to build the infrastructure, relying on Tao (or whoever) to do it all for them. In the defense of the App store program, Apple's happy, the programmer of the app is happy, the end user is happy, so in effect it's a victimless crime. I even understand -- to a certain extent -- Apple's need to control certain types of applications and keep them out of the app store. Emulators such as UAE for example would introduce vulnerabilities into the system allowing virus writers to hack together an Amiga virus which could theoretically take over the phone. Voice apps, such as Google Voice for another example would allow an iPhone user to bypass their telecom partner's system while still using up their telecom partner's 3g bandwidth, which -- while the American way -- isn't fair to AT&T. That part of the app store approval process probably IS governed by a part of the contract between Apple and AT&T, so while inconvenient to the end user who wants to run his Amiga on his phone, I have no problems with it. All in all, I can't do much more than raise a glass and give kudos to Apple for their genius in putting it all together.

Perhaps, but... When my $80 digital camera can encode and save 640 video on the fly to the flash card, I can't tend to believe it's a very difficult proposition.. Streaming it over 3G on the other hand might be a different issue. I remember how much trouble AT&T got into when the iPhones first hit where bandwidth was concerned, so I concede that it might be an issue. Still.. Even if you did like my eye-fi card and stored it locally until you had a wifi connection, that'd be better than no camera at all IHMO.

segwayne.com : Movie Review: Avatar

Just saw Avatar myself. Turns out I had no plans for New Year's Eve. Between the pessimistic view of the review above, and the uber-hyped "Cameron is a cinematic God" level promotions, I sort of actually walked away with the opinion of "meh". Granted. The graphics and everything were great, and yes, I could see how in 3d, it might have even been engrossing to the viewer, but I just can't get over the idea that most of the bits of the actual story had been done before. Never saw "Dances with Wolves", so can't really say anything about the comparison, but between the Mechwarrior robots, the flying hovercopters, the "Alien" type base, and everything else, I just can't say that this movie was "the bestest moovy evar".. The actors did a great job, and yeah, the animated characters were far more emotionally viable than we've ever seen before, but it's still a 3d world, and that just.. well.. I dunno. Until 3d animation gets to the point that it can physically 100% replace actors and bring them into the home, I just can't get enthusiastic. As for the messages, I didn't really see the political crap that everyone's talking about, but then again, I actually sat through District 9 and never bothered to make the connection to the real world either. With the rare exception of movies like "The Day After Tomorrow" which do go out of the way to beat you over the head with the PC/greenie stick, I guess I just have the rare ability to watch movies for what they are and leave the subliminal messages on the screen. I was glad to have gone to see Avatar. Given your impressions -- most of which are valid --, perhaps it's best to have gone in with my own preconceptions. To be honest, I needed to get out of the house on New Year's Eve, but honestly don't believe this movie will be a Blu-Ray purchase. Time will tell. Wayne

segwayne.com : Dexter: "The Getaway"

I totally agree on the "how did they miss Kyle standing 20 feet from them?" aspect but can't say the same about Rita. A small part of why I like Dexter so much is that he's obviously a sociopath, but he's trying to fit into normal society. Rita was pretty much the anchor there so it's going to be interesting to see what happens next.

segwayne.com : Dell Mini 9 / Vostro A90 memory cleared up

Not sure what might be in dispute. I've got a Vostro A90 that's running 667. I've now tried the default 800mhz chip, and a friend's 533 chip with the same result. Is it possible that an 800mhz 2GB chip would run faster than a 667 2GB chip? Maybe..? Don't know yet. What I do know is that both work without issue and that a 667 2GB chip seems to be faster than an 800 1 gigabyte equivalent, as I'd expect. All three chips are shown in the BIOS as only being 533 megahertz, which is as fast as the bus will run (sans overclocking). Good luck with yours. Wayne

segwayne.com : Movie Review: 2012

Thanks K. I truly appreciate it. In regards to the movie, it's apparent that I'm alone amongst friends in my ability to suspend the laws of physics. If you're willing to sit back and just enjoy it as an adventure movie, then you'll enjoy it. If you get caught up in the technicals, then probably not. It was fun to watch California fall off into the ocean though, so I'm ok with it. :)

segwayne.com : Movie Review: 2012

Well, I was TRYING to be somewhat anonymous, but ok... :) In regards to "need to check professional reviews", why? Your own opinion should be sufficient, unless you simply truly detest the film enough that you MUST go out of the way and pick it apart further. It's an action flick with what I would have to term "epic" visual effects. That's all it's supposed to be. The visuals were good, and it kept a good sense of humor going which kept it from being too absolutely bleak and depressing (as I suppose the end of the world will be). BTW, it's *MUCH* better than "The Day After Tomorrow" (TDAT) on the level of preachy (at least we didn't cause the end of the world this time, unlike TDAT which was a 2 hour advertisement for Greenpeace). If you truly believe it's as bad as TDAT on the scale of preachy, I honestly recommend that you go back and watch TDAT again as a refresher in bad plot and graphics. I even fully admitted in my review that the plot was full of holes and most of the physics were completely moronic. Even *I* understand the airflow around the wing of an aircraft to know that almost none of the flying scenes were physically possible, but c'mon Lee. It wasn't any worse than Mission Impossible's helicopter down a tunnel scene, or pretty much the entire last John McClain (Diehard) flick. With a great deal of respect intended, I still believe you went in expecting a different, more serious movie than 2012 was ever intended to be, but I digress. Or rather I agree to disagree on this one. 2012 is supposed to be an "adventure ride", not an expose/mockumentary that takes itself seriously. It was just on a much larger "Wyle Coyote scale" than most adventure flicks, which I tend to enjoy. I also enjoyed the first "Final Destination" flick (even though I *hate* horror movies) for pretty much the same reason. You sure you don't want a job counterpointing my reviews? Could be fun.
