GazetteOnline.com : City seeks fund for underpass for Collins Road NE at Lindale Mall

I'm saying it is possible to walk from Best Buy to Kohls, and from Hy-Vee (where is Taco Bell?) to K-Mart, but it isn't currently safe due to the complete lack of pedestrian accommodations. I don't know if you've driven in this area, but there have been several occasions when I have seen pedestrians crossing these streets, so there are pedestrians who would like to use some sort of accommodation.

That's the problem, even if I were to try to cross at the lights, I would still be run over by vehicles not looking for pedestrians.

Hear hear! I feel most of these commenters would complain if the city implemented the cheapest intersection solutions (stop signs) instead of studying traffic flows and installing traffic lights. The fact that the large commercial center on the north east side of town is impossible to navigate by foot is an embarrassment.

Being able to cross a street safely is new flashy, hyped-up, trendy new? I think we have to make a decision to either go for the underpass or accept the fact that the traffic lights in that area will have to be changed to allow for pedestrians, which means longer red lights.

GazetteOnline.com : All lanes now open after crash on Hwy. 151 near Springville

The state proposed what they thought was the easiest and most cost appropriate way to improve the intersection and community members complained the solution would be confusing and inconvenient. I don't think you can pin blame on a single party here, the community needs to accept the solution recommended by the state DOT or pony up the (very large) difference and build a full multi-level interchange.

Ms. Hadish, I think the next time a large company wants to be defended on how much money they make, there is one question you need to ask. "Will you open the books?" If they are unwilling to show you there books, you need to tell them that you won't write a story without their cooperation. The facts exist which could prove or disprove their claims, but they don't seem to be willing to disclose those facts, and I would hope that you and your colleagues at the Gazette would refuse to write any story without first gathering important and relevant facts.

Did you have to pay (directly) for the parking space at the curb in front of your house? While I agree with your statement on the site obviously not being suitable or compatible with the plan, you obviously haven't thought out the parking question. The city has and does highly subsidize parking for all businesses in downtown, I think somewhere around 75% of all downtown parking spaces are owned by the city of Cedar Rapids.

I just hope Jeff Pomeranz does more than try to fill Cedar Rapids with, "snazzy malls, massive subdivisions and corporate campuses." We're an old city with a much different flavor than West Des Moines, and I hope Pomeranz realizes that. I hope a columnist at his next post can use the line, "Jeff Pomeranz, city manager in Cedar Rapids, where snazzy business districts, revitalized urban neighborhoods and gleaming corporate buildings seem to spring up overnight." And yes, I would have liked to here him talk a little before the council approved his hire.

It seems like there are a lot of people interested in opening a co-op in Cedar Rapids. Why don't we all organize and start a co-op? The beauty of the cooperative business structure is it can be started by any sized group of people. I think forming our own co-op in Cedar Rapids would serve the needs of Cedar Rapidians better than simply asking New Pioneer to open a branch here.

I don't think it has as much to do with taxes as it does with permits. The city of Cedar Rapids usually takes the longest of any agency to issue a permit, even when the DNR is included in a project. If building in Cedar Rapids means an extra 3,4, 5, or 6 weeks on your construction schedule, it's pretty easy to see why companies prefer building in Hiawatha or Marion.

While it is possible to put an entire library catalog online, or even have the catalog online and run a library with a storefront. The problem is a (larger than you think) part of the community do not have reliable access to the internet. More importantly, a library offers many services other than simply a catalog, they provide experienced staff, technology resources and public meeting spaces. None of which you could provide to the same level, through an online interface.
