Daily Camera.com: : CU-Boulder: Despite parking complaints, freshman move-in a success - Boulder Daily Camera

The majority do not do that. There are FAR more students, faculty, and staff that drive to campus on any given day than there are parking spots on the hill. That's not even taking into account parking time limits and other issues.

Daily Camera.com: : Analysis: 63 percent of Boulder County residents priced out of home ownership - Boulder Daily Camera

I think the point is that you would expect median home price to fairly closely track median household income. If the median income is too low to afford the median-priced house, it implies people are coming in from outside, i.e. whose income is not counted in the median, driving the housing market upward.

Daily Camera.com: : CU-Boulder freshmen facing sticker shock with first tuition bill - Boulder Daily Camera

Cue CU complaining that they have to keep raising tuition because state funding now accounts for a lower percentage of tuition and fees. What they won't tell you is that this is mainly because of rapidly increasing tuition, not decreasing state funding. State funding for the 2014-15 school year was the same as the 10 year average (about $605 million) and has increased every year since 2011. The current funding per resident student was also just about at the 10 year average and is only $944 (19%) lower in 2014-15 than the ten-year peak in 2008-09. On top of that, the state also contributed more for capital construction and maintenance in 2014-15 than in any of the previous 10 years. Meanwhile, during the same period CU Boulder's in-state tuition increased by $2,030 (28.9%) and mandatory fees increased by $248 (16.6%). That doesn't include non-"mandatory" fees like food, housing, and course/lab/departmental fees, which have also significantly increased. If CU's tuition increases mirrored state per-student funding, I could see the argument. But in reality CU is just bilking people for everything they can. Every time the federal financial aid caps are raised, tuition goes up by about the same amount. Something serious needs to be done to reign in university spending or the problem of students graduating with huge student loans will continue to worsen or the taxpayers will get stuck with a massive student loan bailout while the university gets to keep every penny. *All numbers are from the Colorado Commission on Higher Education Tuition and Fees Report FY 2014-15.

Daily Camera.com: : Boulder police ID officer who fatally shot CU student holding a hammer - Boulder Daily Camera

Really? A 22-year-old drug-crazed naked guy who just stabbed somebody in the face and now appears to be getting ready to jump onto you from above with a hammer doesn't present a life threatening event? I'm not going to speculate on what alternatives the officers may have had because I just don't know enough about it, but at the very least it seems clear to me that the police had ample reason to be concerned for their safety.

I really have a hard time summoning much sympathy in situations like these. Lines have to be drawn somewhere, and if you cross them something bad ought to happen. There are reasons LSD is illegal, including the possibility that you might have a bad trip and attack people with a knife. He intentionally took a drug that put him in a state of mind where he wasn't sensible enough to realize that confronting a bunch of cops with a hammer is a very bad idea.
It is, sort of. Several new ranges have opened in the area in the last few years. But they're relatively small and most are private clubs that cost a lot of money to join. The one I know of that doesn't require a membership is so busy that I gave up on it last year because it was always an hour+ wait to get in. With one exception all the new ranges I know of are pistol ranges, and the one rifle range is only 100 yards. I'm under the impression that building an indoor range is very costly, and of course there's insurance, zoning, and NIMBY issues. To me it just seems stupid to expect to never hear gunshots when recreating outside. It's not that loud, and shooters have as much right to be there as you do. I hate horses and wish people didn't want to ride horses where I want to ride my bike, but I recognize their right to be there, and seeing a horse doesn't ruin my day. The rationale for providing taxpayer funded shooting ranges on public land is the same as the rationale for providing taxpayer funded campsites, trailheads, and trails on public land. Back in the day people just went wherever they wanted, cut new trails, cut clearings to park, etc. But as population and usage increased, that became unworkable. Instead of banning hiking and camping, the government started building and maintaining designated facilities and trying to funnel as much traffic to those as possible. It's still legal to camp or walk wherever you want, but it's not usually a problem because most people choose to use the designated trails and campgrounds anyway. As long as the United States has been a country there have been people shooting on public land. It is and always has been legal. In the US, the tradition of recreational shooting on public land is as old or older than literally every other recreational activity. In other words, there is a long established precedent that shooting on public land is a perfectly valid use. What has changed is population. There are a lot more shooters wanting to use the space and it's causing problems, so something must be done. The most realistic solution is to build safe public shooting areas that are free or nearly free to use, and get people to shoot there instead of in whatever random part of the forest they want. Another way to look at it, you cannot successfully ban shooting in the area. The pro-gun side has the legal high ground, near-limitless lobbying capacity, and a tremendous amount of public support. And even if you enacted a law, it would be effectively unenforceable. The only realistic solutions are to leave things as they are or create designated shooting areas.

No, it's actually quite rare when you consider how many guns and gun owners there are. If Boulder County is anywhere near the national average, there are probably somewhere on the order of 100,000 gun owners living here, including a pretty significant number of concealed weapons permit holders who handle guns nearly every day.
"Essentially, what they're proposing is a budget that would absolutely slash most clubs' abilities to provide the services that make them functional." Perhaps, but I don't see any reason that clubs should be funded to do whatever they want to do just because they want to do it. If you want money, raise it yourself. The university should have set the cap at $0 instead of $225,000.

I wish I could say I'm no longer surprised when CU does something blindingly stupid, but every once in a while they still manage to get me. Whose bright idea was it to pay $87,500 to participate in a survey in the first place? And now never mind, they didn't really want to do the survey after all! They should deduct that $87,500 from the pay of the individuals responsible for making those decisions. Of course the students are too busy smoking weed and hanging out in the rec center's new buffalo-shaped swimming pool to care.
