The WHO are now saying lockdowns should only be implemented if hospitals are being overrun.
Edinburgh University have run a study on the outcomes of various types of lockdown restrictions and found that protecting the vulnerable and letting the virus run was the least damaging option. They suggest that suppression prolongs the duration of the virus and increases mortality whereas a short sharp peak in infection would probably last only a hundred days or so and it will die out.
I don't see a vaccine having the effect that many expect. A medical correspondent from Forbes wrote an article last week that having studied the product literature published by the four main vaccine developers he suggests the vaccines will not prevent corona virus only lessen the symptoms and if the take up is the same as the flu jab it's efficacy will be somewhat compromised

I believe the problem is that it has been hijacked by a number of people who have put fake signatures to it with the intention of getting it discredited.
It has also been alleged that the Guardian is fishing around to find dirt to smear at least one of the leading scientific signatories.

The app also assumes everyone has a phone with fairly recent software. I was surprised I could download the app on my six year old phone. My wife has no chance as her phone is around fifteen years old with only a phone/text facility.

The Test and Trace has suffered from flooding the job with labour before the infrastructure was is in place and trying to run before it had learned to walk.
The disease of many British organisations
This has left lots of tracers sitting around doing nothing while the system is assembled on what appears to be an adhoc basis.
This leads to a disinterested workforce who will not be running at full efficiency.

I agree. Yesterday the CMO said that 'the next six months were crucial,' I think that was a gross underestimation six years could be more accurate. The virus is not going away any time soon, with or without a vaccine.
As you say there are alternatives that we could live with long term and that's where the Government should be heading.
The PM and Health Secretary should get out there tell the truth and stop Bull Sh.....ng then the public would know what direction we are going and plan their lives and businesses around it.

And all because of dysfunctional parenting, the failure to teach respect, manners and common decency.
It is said that unless you start teaching a child discipline before the age of three it is too late, trying to change adults after they have left full time education is to para phrase the PM " spaffing money against a wall."

Sir Graham Brady has made a valid point. The Government appears to be somewhat blinkered and disappearing into a cul-de-sac when another 600 or so pairs of eyes and opinions would not go amiss.
The situation needs some long term thinking and not knee jerk reactions.

There is an interesting video on Youtube explaining the statics by Ivor Cummings, Viral Issue Crucial Update Sept 8th: the Science, Logic and Data Explained. It is a bit long but the inference is from the data that countries with high Covid mortality were those that had low winter flue mortality rates. He looks at a number of countries across Europe including the UK. Italy, France, Spain and UK who had very low flu deaths but high Covid deaths. Where as Finland and Norway had average flue deaths and low Covid deaths. The suggestion is countries that had got away lightly with flu had a bigger reservoir of vulnerable people to become victims of Covid.
Sweden had a high blip at the outset but then settled down at a steady level.
It could be that Covid has already claimed a significant proportion of the vulnerable and there may be less in a second wave.
