The book lays out a myriad of alternatives to loans, of which the options you mentioned are included along with ways on how to maximize them. The biggest and most obvious option is to help your kids choose a school that is affordable. Not that it is easy, but as someone on the other-side of the decision process, and who chose trivialities over prudence, I can say that there are many more affordable options available to them than what they may think.

There is a section on private loans and I can attest personally that they are indeed scary. So far I have been quite fortunate with the rates and they are currently lower than my direct loans.

Thanks for your comment Joshua, I appreciate your viewpoint. I think your opinion is a good one, but it was in no way my intention in this article to provide a government alternative guide to creating safety. My intention was to call into question what I believe is a common misunderstanding notably that many seem to believe that they will get what politicians promise and what they were required to pay for.

The ending question was just that, a question. I believe we are not "safe", safe from changes to a system that is financially broken. Does this mean there will be mass panic and riots? I hope not, but it hammers home that point that in my mind, and I am hoping to convince others, that self promises made through preparation, design, and work are far better than those made by others in the form of entitlements.
