Thank God she wasn't killed. I'm also thankful for the sake of the folks in the station wagon - looks like they were hauling carefully and responsibly and it would be awful to have someone killed by something you were hauling even if it was not in any way your fault!

I am so glad at least that the driver came back. Seems like we usually only read about those who don't.

Fireworks are so hard on animals. For livestock it's dangerous too. My sheep and poultry were all going nuts last night (and that was just the 3rd), in fact one of my turkey hens flew over the fence and into the woods (has never left before) and has not come back. Sigh.

People expect to have their cake and eat it too:

A non-intrusive government, which somehow manages to prevent abuse while providing innumerable services to the vulnerable. All at low cost to taxpayers.

To quote Professor Digory: "Logic! Why don't they teach logic in these schools anymore!"

That was my thought too. Sounds like they're losing any financial security as his retirement is going to make restitution.

I'm not making any judgments here but I do wonder whether anyone knew, or at least suspected? Shopping sprees, travel, I wonder how he explained how he paid for these things?

I don't think KOMO's article gives us enough information one way or another. It says she paid $950 for the move. It says when she called after moving they said she had to pay the $1200 for the packaging costs. It does NOT say whether that was the first time she'd been told or whether she'd been told upfront or whether she found out partway through the process or whether it had been hidden in fine print and they sprung it on her days later. (Personally, I'd be on the phone with the police if somebody sprung this on me at any time AFTER driving away with my goods. Sure wouldn't be paying $1200 just because someone asked.)

I'm not saying she wasn't scammed (sounds like this is common) but KOMO, if you're gonna problem solve, get the facts.

I'm so glad he survived this fall. So scary. Never a dull moment for parents, just where you least expect it, it happens.

Good for him for choosing a rational lifestyle and taking command of his life. Bet he's much the happier for it.

BI's Chief Fehlman works actively with NAMI and has tremendous understanding for special issues relating to the mentally ill including training of officers. But I am very sorry to hear BI is appealing. What that family has gone through is terrible and should not have happened. Need to stop dragging it out and let them find some closure.

Quite right Ken. Parents who fail to get involved when invited to have only themselves to thank for results they don't like.

I'm always in favor of factual, honest, answers as early as the child starts asking (though not more detailed than the child is seeking or evidently comfortable with) - and earlier if circumstances make it a prudent choice or the kid is reticent by nature. But most of all we parents should build a relationship of the type where our kids are never afraid or embarrassed to ask US. I think it's kind of sad though that kids are left to find these things out either from peers or teachers. And MHunt, I think explaining the meaning of the curse words was brilliant. Kid's probably much less likely to use them!
