They did this by having subjects read a piece of text where the first and last letter of each word was correct, but the letters in the middle were rearranged. The findings showed that test subjects could not only read and comprehend through the misspellings, but didn't even notice most of them. It's a 'trick' that the brain plays on us, which explains how these things go unnoticed. It's not as if nobody knew how to spell the word 'public' or that they didn't try to check their work.
