Until MS starts claiming all of it's taxable revenue in this state instead of Nevada I have very little compassion for the company. (microsofttaxdodge)

IMO once prices reset to the 2001-2002 levels it would probably be safe to buy. I don't see us out of the woods yet on real estate price declines since there are too many distressed properties in foreclosure or off the market and already owned by the bank(s).

It seems like there may be mutual blame here but we will know soon as more facts appear. While I don't condone the shooting I would likely act in self defense myself if I was cornered with an assailant wielding a large Maglite at me. This would assume my car was disabled and I had no other means to repel the attack. I have never been in a fist fight in my life and would likely lose in that regard due to a lack of skill over brawn. One could be just as injured in a first fight as with a firearm as your head hits the pavement. I do find it disturbing how careless some drivers are without any regard for others. I try to set a positive example by allowing others to merge and such. I can only hope that they think about this in the future when others ask the same of them.

+1 on the GPS. Also a good backup to cell phone is an inexpensive GPRS radio. Some of these units can reach up to 20 miles in straight line perfect conditions. Sometimes text messages can get out in fringe areas that voice communication cannot. They could text message their current GPS coordinates. Hope all is well and they are found safe.

I was just citing a recent encounter. I also see these stickers on a lot of expensive Japanese and European cars as Medic1965 stated above. This is in addition to the decked out GMC Sierra, Dodge Rams or Ford F350s with 5-10K in aftermarket mods. Of course I will readily admit that expensive cars can also mean someone who is living beyond their means and in severe debt as well.

There is no penalty for taking retirement at 53 though. All other state pension systems reduce benefit on a percentage for every year you retire early at 55. This percentage differs depending on if you have 20 or 30 years service. All other state pensions that allowed for a "no penalty" 55 pension closed to new members back in 1978. IMO LEOFF definitely is a premium pension system compared to PERS, SERS, etc...

So LEOFF 2 members can pull full retirement at 53 with 20 years of service? If so, that is much better than the 30 year requirement of the old PERS 1 pension. It sounds like there were lots of changes with state pensions back in '78 but LEOFF still maintained some of the better provisions of past pensions.

It sounds like LEOFF needs to be brought in line with PERS 2 & 3. Does LEOFF provide for medical & dental in retirement? I know PERS 2 & 3 does not.

Here is DOT snow/ice removal info. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/winter/anti.htm I usually only travel to the Roslyn exit on a regular basis but freeway seems to always be treated with de-icer. This accident appears to have occurred on that sharp left curve just before the Roslyn exit. It's these corners I would be more concerned about than the straightaways. All season tires are usually fine if they are newer but snow tires would be better. These ultimately help you in stopping. AWD and snow tires is about sure footed as it gets but even with 2WD and snow tires you should have good traction. IMO AWD even with traction control in a sideways slide is just about the same as a 2WD drive car with bald tires. Even though I have several AWD cars I don't allow that to make me overconfident. I do remember an ice storm 5 or so years ago on Snoquamie that required chains even on AWD vehicles. You may hear opinions to the contrary but I found siping on all-season tires markedly increases the traction. Most tire places will sipe your tires for a nominal fee. You could even get the snow tires studded but then the debate about road wear comes up. I've probably rambled on enough. Let me know if there is anything unclear... if not all that I have written above. :-). No expert but I have regularly traversed Snoqualmie pass the last 10 or so years.

Hope everyone makes a speedy recovery. NWS did have an advisory yesterday about potential ice conditions on I-90. Weather radios are your friend. Most portable GMRS radios also have a weather band. If you regularly travel the passes in the winter it is a good item to keep on hand.

If you are concerned about online safety use something like Discover's Secure Online Account Numbers. http://www.discovercard.com/customer-service/secu... These only work with one vendor so if they do get compromised you will know where it happened and it won't lock out the primary account. There is a Visa and Mastercard equivalent IIRC.
