Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: BSU fallout

When the TV announcers talk about the OSU Linebackers needing to develop and mature and you see that they are seniors you know we are in trouble.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: BSU fallout

Jordan Bishop is an athlete, Halahuni a monster and even McCants has the body to lower the boom on opposing defenses. I definitely don't understand the play calling. Long attempted pass (with a very promising QB, but doesn't have the touch yet), Quizz up the middle twice without good run blocking and then a punt (possibly line drive). Three and out at key times is not good play calling.

It's called targeting. I can't believe the officials missed the facemask/horsecollaring combination on Rodgers.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Blue field practice report

Cliff, Thanks for the great updates. I was wondering why Riley doesn't use McCants on offense. If he had a great spring and fall wouldn't it be nice to have a big back pound the defense a little? Seems like that would give a different look when Quizz comes back in. Defense did some good things, but they need to be more consistent. Didn't look like the DE have put much pressure on the quarterback. BSU QB doesn't run, but he has a quick release--do the beavers feel like they can put pressure on him?

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Defense, TCU trip

There is a lot of track & field fundraising going on through track & field alumni. First phase is done and they will begin work this spring I believe. Field will be next to the softball field. Dick Fosbury is the chairman of the fundraising. There will be a track & field alumni gathering at the Alumni Tailgater before first home game. They will have information I am sure. Check the Alumni page to see if there are links for more info, or contact OSU Women's Track coach.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Sunday night update

Game was about what I expected. We were competitive, but did not play like winners. Look at Boise State--they talked like winners and showed it on the field. I didn't see the intensity on defense that I've seen from past beavers. We looked out of place and lost most of the night. Hopefully this team will improve. I think Katz will only get better. Coaches need to get the right people on the field. I expect us to win the next game. I predicted a win at BSU, but we need to step it up and play like we know we can win, or the Broncos will have a field day. They looked good against VT, but definitely vulnerable to big boy football.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: TCU game thread

Everyone saw the same thing over and over again. DE allowed TCU outside constantly and the LBs were out of position. What about having someone shadow Dalton--he killed us on runs all night. Offense was ok. Katz did well for first start, but Riley needs to adjust. Throw in different running backs occassionally to shake things up. Throw more to Joe! Time for Banker to retire.

Ok, ok, somebody woke up a bit grumpy. I'll stop wondering about the move. It's just that all the talk about him being an all world 5 star Tackle makes me not want to waste a year if he misses the first 2-4, whatever games. I was just joking about the free breakfast bar. Having never seen the media room I don't know what the set up is. Thanks, Cliff for everything.

Seems like Philipps is in Riley's dog house and when that happens Riley seems to be quite stubborn. If Philipps sits out such an important game, then Riley should redshirt him and not waste a year of eligibility. Cliff, try to push Riley on this and don't let him awh shucks his way around it. These kind of crazy moves are what keep OSU just a step below breaking out into the big time. Katz sounds very positive. What's with all the background noise on the video--media types at the free breakfast bar?

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Thomas fallout

Bad decisions are nothing new to young men, but Tyler definitely has a problem with alcohol. A lot of college kids drink and don't end up where he did and this isn't the first time he's had a problem. Hopefully, this will be an opportunity for him to get help and stop drinking, or this will only be the beginning. I hope he gets it turned around and gets his life on track. Not too worried about the national news--they like sensational stories, but they'll be off on different stories soon enough. Team needs to keep focused on what is a head of them.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: OSU notes (update)

I personally don't think Olander has the right to refuse to talk with you. He is a student athlete representing Oregon State and when a media request is made he should be made available. The SID should facilitate interview. Major leagues continue to snatch up younger and younger players. The enticement of $ signs is too much for many. The money isn't really that much unless they land with a Big Leauge team--the odds are slim for most of them. I doubt that we'll ever hear the names of Peavey and others except for updates of thier minor league careers. Staying in college could make a difference.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: McCants must step up

Thank you Cliff for the McCants interview. He is a classy young man and I do hope he does well this year. With big money football and scholarships we often times loose sight that these are simply young men maturing and growing and learning each and everyday. I liked his comments about working on weaknesses and improving. If we all did that we'd be further along. Again, thanks.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Early notes Day 4

Thank you Cliff I appreciate your responsiveness and approach. I think people have forgotten that McCants is still young and he hasn't been given a lot of opportunities, which make his mistakes or lack of experience stand out. Quizz is special and to compare others to him isn't always fair. It would have been nice to see a video of Quizz's cutback that you talked about yesterday. Hopefully he won't head off to the NFL. I am a real believer in doing the full 4 years for all sports. So many baseball, basketball and football players that leave early never really make it. Hopefully the coaches will talk with them. Steven P will be pleased that he came back I am sure. Sure injuries are always a possibility, but that's life. Brandon Browner is an example of someone who went out early and never made it. A good article on the negatives of leaving early might be interesting.
