http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/ : Will PSNI now quiz the Paras? - BelfastTelegraph.co.uk

Why does every article remotely related to G Adams arrest and the subsequent fallout have comments disabled? Could it be that a few over zealous contributors crossed lines? Between legal letters in the post and mugshots in the papers, not a great time to be a hardline loyalist I guess.

Well, in fairness robinsp, those people in Derry were murdered. The PSNI know the organisation to which the perpetrators belonged (Parachute Regiment), their identities and the person in command. Personally I believe its time for a line to be drawn under all this, but if the PSNI are going to stand on their record of impartiality then murder is murder and how do they explain not pursuing a case that can be prosecuted on far stronger evidence than hearsay?

If this is an indication of the quality of 'evidence' used to pursue Gerry Adams I think EVERYONE should be questioning the motives of the PSNI or elements within it.... Peter Weiler, Professor Emeritus and Chair until 2003, told the Irish Independent the project has "tarnished the reputation" of the History Department. "The project didn't observe normal academic procedures into projects of oral history. Questions asked were often very leading, and there was no attempt at balance," he said. ( P Weller, Boston College.)

“I think that the Parades Commission is now so discredited and is so much part of the problem that the way forward in Northern Ireland is for its removal.” He was also asked if he would advise people to abide by Parades Commission decisions. He replied: “I totally condemn violence, I am totally opposed to it, but I could not condemn others.” ( Nelson McCausland BT 5th Sept 2012) ' Chief Constable, Matt Baggott yesterday publicly hit back at Mr Robinson who claimed a large section of the community do not believe the PSNI was being impartial.' ' Nigel Dodds last night jumped to Mr Robinson's defence saying that he was "absolutely right to raise these concerns with the Chief Constable and to point out publicly the perception there is out there over recent events". (BT 6th Mar 2013) '"The Secretary of State has a responsibility to do something about the outrageous decisions of the Parades Commission in Northern Ireland and unless she acts there will be difficulty ahead." (Nigel Dodds 10th July 2013)

Reviewing Robinson, Dobbs and Nesbitts statements over the last few days, I had to laugh at the sheer hypocrisy regarding support for the PSNI and the Courts. These statements obviously were intended for use beyond local media as everyone here must remember their bleating about PSNI and Court handling of actions (should that be inaction?) against flaggers, illegal parades, parades in breach of PC determinations, illegal road closures, inciting tweets (remember Ruth?) Didn't they all wander hand in hand with the OO to PSNI HQ to complain loudly and publicly about operational matters? Was it not a very clear attempt to undermine the authority and legitimacy of the PSNI and the Courts? Has it gone unnoticed that there was no call to the streets by SF over this matter... unlike the DUP/UUP leaflet drop which had no other purpose than to bring idiots to the streets in an attempt to undermine democracy and make a legitimate decision by BCC unworkable..... how's that for respect of the law and unconditional support for its instruments? Peter managed to complain of 'Bully Boy' tactics with a straight face!

Where's the gloating 8billion? If you watched the news conference in it's entirety I'd be happy to consider your dissenting opinion on how Gerry Adams conducted himself or, indeed, the statement he made. The PPS review will not be the only review triggered by this incident. I'm looking forward to full disclosure. I'm also looking forward to Peter's condemnation of Loyalist violence on the streets this evening and his full support of the PSNI to deal with it robustly.

Surprised to see you here, weren't you predicting charges a few hours ago? Peter could take a few lessons on poise and demeanour from Gerry. A news conference that completely wrong-foots the DUP, what will Peter complain about tomorrow in his response - that Gerry insulted the competence of Antrim Station catering staff?

If SF's assertion that nothing new has been put to GA is accurate, what has prompted this PSNI action at this time? Let me be clear again, If evidence exists, present it and convict. Rumour and innuendo is not evidence, nor is newspaper articles or, with he greatest respect, is Ms McKendry's recollections as she wasn't there. Leaving aside the political machinations, it is very easy for the authorities to manipulate opinion and perception. Don't forget the 'official' narrative, assisted by media, tried for 20 years to convince us that Liverpool fans were responsible for their own demise at Hillsborough. When does 'not in the public interest, actually mean, not In the public interest?

'The timing was partly in Mr Adams' gift. He agreed to meet the police in Antrim on Tuesday. He could have remained in the Republic and asked for a later date'.
Mike, If any high profile Loyalist/Unionist politician was arrested under the same circumstances, ie, a 40 year old offence where all the 'evidence' ( if you were to believe the blanket media coverage) is in the public domain and three weeks before an election, despite the fact that he or she made themselves available for questioning 6 week ago, I would certainly think that it had political undertones. What new evidence has been unearthed in the last week, or month? I have absolutely no objection to anyone being held responsible for their actions but I do think the timing of this is politically motivated.

I have to say, for once I agree with most of this bigchief. except big conspiracies aren't always smart conspiracies and this may be a prime example. This is a 40 year old crime, the Boston tapes have been in PSNI hands for quite a while and GA is arrested 3 weeks before an election that is projected to return more SF euro MEP's than any other party on the Island. I've stated elsewhere on this site, if the evidence exists, present it and convict him but by any standards the timing of this arrest is suspect.
