PostGameHeroes : The Vikings can be thrown on

the vikings pass defense is ranked 24th in yards per attempt. stillers are ranked tied for 2nd in yards per attempt. the big plays will be there for the stillers. i don't know how to eliminate YAC from the calculations, but i know the big plays are there also. pass pro has been awesome for the past games, and flacco had time to throw.

PostGameHeroes : Mike Tomlin Press Conference

did you see where the microphone fell during the polamalu question? http://www.nfl.com/videos/pittsburgh-steelers/090... right at the beginning (first 5 seconds). vikes will be the first 4-3 defense we've played since cincy (detroit doesn't count). i'm not expecting much from the RB's. hopefully big ben can torch that secondary.

what's with the steelers-jaguars picture? and why do you have a picture of amos zeroue (er, mewelde) when you are writing about mendenhall? that oline in the picture is marvel - kemo - (hartwig) - darnell - colon... was that picture supposed to be a joke, or just a mistake?

PostGameHeroes : Steelers Offensive Line Confidential

for the record, the guys are talking about running the no huddle as a weapon. then hartwig mentions it's effective, "as long as he's (ben) not calling out 'black cowboy' in the future" which gets big laughs. so i went back and watched week 1 again. the play where ben calls out "black cowboy" is the play where kearse comes unblocked from the right side and crushes ben. i still think that was on 'tone who missed a quick screen, but that's a long time ago now...

PostGameHeroes : Post-Game Q and A

i heard hoge on pittsburgh radio last week and he said, "the truth is, no playoff team wants to be playing their best football in sept." i agree - let's see all the cracks in the armor now, and then we can work on them during the next 4-5 weeks. then you figure out what you really can and cannot do, and for the remainder of the season, that's what you play with. you call out mendy in week 3 so that he's mentally prepared in week 15. i agree with that, and anyway, i'd just as soon have willie get 20-25 carries every game to get rolling. i'm sick and tired of hearing the defense is old (from the press conference). the reality is that this is a different team without troy. i hate phil simms, but he's right that troy makes the tackle on benson's TD run, troy probably stuffs both 4th down's on the last drive, as well as the TD. and that's not to blame TC - it's just that troy is the sickest ball hawk, and he makes those plays. while the 2nd consecutive game winning drive was allowed by the DEF, let's make no mistake in remembering this game was lost three different ways by the offense. if limas makes that freaking catch (i hate this guy now forever), we're not talking about any of this.

are limas' days in pittsburgh over (again)? mike wallace has turned into what i was expecting from limas - except wallace is faster. oh, and he doesn't drop 80% of the ball thrown to him. and wallace hasn't dropped two critical touchdowns that would have sealed ball games. and wallace doesn't wear the same jersey number as neil freaking o'donnell.

PostGameHeroes : Chicago offense uses familiar blueprint to beat Steelers defense

while i agree that the defense didn't lost this game for us, let's not forget that this defense gave up a 97 yard drive early on. that makes me sick. and it was dump of passes the whole way down. da bears converted 3 3rd downs (one on a penalty). sure the stillers D has only allowed 10 and 17 pts, but they didn't exactly defend every blade of grass out there.

ok, so i agree that style points don't matter and i do believe in this team, but tomlin himself said this week that the run game (and the o-line blocking in the run game) has to get better "because it gives us a better chance to win." if the o-line can run block even a little bit, then that gives us a better chance to win. pretty simple, and you have to agree that it has to get better, yet there is little hope of that happening.

does kemo utter a singe word during this thing? the crew seems to prefer the hurry up because the def doesn't get to sub and so they are tired. i dunno about y'all, but that makes me sad. what happened to the days of punching the other guy in the face, imposing our will? instead, these guys prefer scheming matchups against tired defenders?

btw, redman's effort got him that TD last night, however, one the the ref's definitely threw a block for him (panther CB was about to close on him, but he ran into the umpire). i thought that was just like super bowl XIII!

i came here to comment on this as soon as i found this out. an advantage to not revealing (even though it's being revealed) who's cut, you can better figure out who's not gonna clear. is there a chance tomlin changes his mind about redman now with the bears certainly looking for a RB? maybe this is tomlin/colbert strategy to try to get something in return for redman from da bears? or am i just reading too much into this? i definitely think they're smart enough to consider this...

PostGameHeroes : Casey Hampton to get cut or traded?

bouchette refers to this "report" from nfl network and (like some here) give it as much credence as vick coming to the stillers. in bouchette's column, though, big snack is pretty sure that the steelers won't apply the franchise tag on him. why wouldn't we do that? that seems a pretty obvious thing to do, unless tomlin is really sick of him...

lame article - that's not even keisel (it's aaron smith's number 91 in the picture). btw, does keisel's signing mean that the steelers won't be resigning aaron smith after 2010? that sucks. i love that guy.

PostGameHeroes : A question for Bruce Arians

i wanted to throw out 2004 b/c i thought it was a surprise for defenses to see #7 through, but looking back 5 of those 7 were from shotgun, so there was no surprise. you're right that 2004 should stay. but looking at td:int is not so meaningful. scoring a TD on 3rd-short has more to do with field position. 1st down conversion rates is more illustrative. if you include 3rd and 3, the numbers become closer, and in fact, the steelers at 3rd-(less than 4) are in the top 10 each year in this catgeory nfl-wide (2008 we were 11th). i'm just saying that you are trying to strike up a discussion, but you're presenting too small of a sample and without reference to what is the normal expectation. oh, and what JHwtMF says...

PostGameHeroes : A question for Bruce Arians

nice try, but this is incomplete data: qb rating is a bad way to evaluate (a 33 yd gain on 3rd-2 has too much of an impact - you ought to limit yardage to amount needed for 1st down). instead, look at percentage of 1st down conversions in those situations: before arians: 2004: 7 pass attempts, 86% conversion 2005: 9 attempts, 56% 2006: 16 attempts, 56% total: 3 yrs, 32 attempts, 63% (25 and 56% if you exclude 2004) with arians 2007: 11 attempts, 55% 2008: 19 attempts, 53% total: 2 yrs, 30 attempts, 53% 2004 was a surprise year, so if we discount those 7 tries, then the pre-arians and post-arians conversion rates are nearly the same. as wahoo and robert insinuate, the departure of a running game has had more impact on 3-rd and short passing than arians. so do you blame arians or the OL? i don't think you can automatically blame both...
