So I went and just clicked Restore in iTunes (in order to restore the original firmware from Apple). After the restore I closed iTunes and disconnected my iPhone (2G). Then I launched PwnageTool and created the custom firmware image. Then I got into DFU mode following the steps in PwnageTool (the DFU button). After that I shift-clicked restore in iTunes and selected the custom firmware and it worked like a charm! Now I am syncing!!! I created the custom firmware in Pwnage tool but when I try to restore my 2G iPhone using it in iTunes I get error 1604. Someone suggested I delete the files in ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support. Except there's no "Device Support" folder in that location! What should I do? I really cannot stand that emergency screen anymore!!! But since the phone remains unlocked you will be able to make calls (via the emergency mode keypad) and receive calls.
