3.1.2 then redsn0w to hactivate and jailbreak ultrasn0w to unlock. If they want to go higher after that pwnage custom firmware and then restore from recovery not DFU. Then install ultrasn0w again

that is the only method for 3GS at this time and it is correctly stated. You have to be at 3.1.2 to jailbreak with redsn0w or pwnage custom firmware. You are then on the jailbreak train (3GS Old Bootrom) which can allow custom ipsw for 4.0.1 to be installed for jailbreak but there is no ultrasn0w unlock yet for 4.0.1 released. The new jailbreak and unlock that is on the way will support jailbreak and unlock of 4.0 and 4.0.1 but will required a clean restore (and activated normally through itunes) phone.

hmm well I can't really confirm that issue but I know that push fix has worked for every phone I used it on and Push Doctor scares me as it load 10MB of stuff on the phone. I heard many say it did not work. If you do a clean restore to 3.1.3 and then jailbreak with redsn0w you could confirm if it something that happened when you jailbroke with spirit

you need to try push fix before asking for help as that is what it is for. If it does not work then you can try a fresh restore if you have your shsh blobs for 3.1.3. You are jailbroken and not using the official carrier soooo

downgrade to 3.1.3 it will give you error 1015 ignor and downgrade again it will give you error 1015. Then open tiny umbrella and click the kick device out of recovery button on right upper panel section. Then jailbreak with spirit. Make sure you don't have itunes 9.2 if you use spirit. If you want you can also jailbreak with redsn0w 9.2 and itunes 9.2 will not be an issue.
