If it were simply a matter of taxes I don't think it would have caused the commotion that it has. It is the fact that it represents a government take over of about 1/6 of the US economy and it is being done against the will of the people that makes it so unpalatable. Our representatives have simply decided that they do not have to listen to the people. I think it will cost them come election time.

I am always amazed but never disappointed by liberals. I can count on liberals to avoid the facts and resort to ad hominem attacks every time. I appreciate your comment. Although we disagree on the religious leanings of the founders I whole heartedly agree with everything else you had to say. Regarding religion I think you have hit upon the issue that bothers me most. I am not actively trying to convert anyone to or from anything where religion is concerned and I guess that is all I want in return. Now political view points (while adhered to with almost the same fanaticism as religious dogma) is a different issue. I am most definitely trying to win converts in that arena. Thanks for commenting. (I agree where steve-o is concerned as well which is why I didn't bother to respond to him)

Please explain how having a prayer at an awards meeting is an establishment of religion. The so called establishment clause is a prohibition against a state sponsored religion, not an indictment against religion. Contrary to the media's assertion the founders had no intention of stripping religion from the lives of citizens or the government. They understood the value of religion and, by the way, founded a country based on that religion. "We are all endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights..."

Yes, it reminds me of my younger days. One of the guys would come up with some hair brained idea and the rest of us would egg them on to do it. This is why it’s good to have at least one sober rational person along for the ride. The guy who is standing back scratching his head saying "I don't think that's such a good idea".

I can't argue with any of that. What eats at me though is the hypocrisy. These guys invented "astroturfing" and their righteous indignation rings a little hollow. I do not concede that what we are seeing at these town hall meetings if "staged" or disingenuous. I believe that this is true public outrage at a government that no longer represents the people.

Without addressing whether or not legalization is the answer, the proposed solution certainly does not seem to be a logical answer to police corruption. If Mexico wants to legalize drugs that's fine but they should hit the issue of police corruption head-on regardless.

Where did you gather your figures? "Uncle Sam" does not have constitutional authority to compete with a free market, the founders would have railed against any such notion. You may forget that not all of us want to be in the "government pool" and under this plan health insurance is mandatory. Once "Uncle Sam" has run private isurers out of business we will be left with only government health care. Given the efficiency of every other government run program do you really think we will be better off?

I'll be honest, I'm not opposed to change and our health care system needs some work. Having said that I dispute your numbers and offer you this regarding the statement "If we don't try we will never know": I have never drunk bleach, yet I know what will happen if I do. Change for the sake of change is never good, we need to slow down and look at what is in this bill. If after close scrutiny the American people are still interested then by all means, move forward.
