9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : US lawyers are loving their Macs

I'm a lawyer and scarcely know another lawyer who uses a Mac. I love mine, don't get me wrong, but almost every office I know seems to be standardized on MS Word for Windows. I can't think of one firm that uses Mac as their office standard.

I liked your comments. Intelligent, informative and useful observations. But did you have to spoil them with a gratuitous insult? And I happen to be over 45 by almost 10 years. I just never could stand the Beatles. I dislike them as much as I dislike Justin Bieber!

You have got to be kidding me! The Beatles?? What in the world is the obsession with this tired old group from 45 years ago?? You'd have to pay ME to take their music.

Dude, all of those religions accept homosexuality. Unless "truth" is whatever you decide it is, all you have to do is check those denominations' own websites and find out for yourself. What is your fear?

Really? Please back that up. The Reform branch of Judaism, the United Church of Christ and the Metropolitan Community Church are just some of the religions that don't teach that. Ancient Greek religion did not believe that. Since your statement is manifestly false, why does it give you comfort to believe in falsehoods? And so what if they did? At various times, religions have believed and taught numerous things that were false (the earth is flat, slavery is moral, women are inferior to men, etc.). Thank goodness we don't live in a society ruled by religion but by laws and reason.

This review certainly does NOT reflect my opinion after wasting time and money on this movie. It was slow and plodding for the first 2/3rds, though with some suspense, but then suddenly the movie takes a major turn for the worse and becomes incoherent and unbelievable (within the logic of its own premises). I sat there thinking, "this is absurd, who would act that way?" It made the movie seem completely forced and therefore completely destroyed any connection I felt with the characters to that point. In total, it was far worse than the original. I would definitely not encourage others to see it. It's simply a pointless rehash of the first one and not nearly so good.

Seriously? Anyone who treats gays fairly must somehow be gay? If the record shows anything, the ones you should suspect are religious preachers who are rabidly anti-gay and denouncing homosexuality constantly. Without fail, they end up being outed as major hypocrites covering up their own conflicted secret gay lives. If religions would just shut up about sex and people would stop putting others down, we'd have a much happier world.

Does anyone know if the included apps are faster? Opening iPhoto 09 is painfully slow and takes at least 2 minutes on my iMac 2.4GHz core 2 duo with 4 Gb RAM. iMovie is faster than that but also very slow. I don't want to waste money on the next version unless it is significantly faster than these two dogs.

So why are gay children forced to be exposed to the constant heterosexuality of their straight, married teachers? Should teachers just be like nuns at Catholic school? Exposing kids to gay teachers no more turns them gay than exposing gay kids to straight teachers turns them straight. Your concerns are not based on fact but on your own anti-gay feelings.

Absurd. Heterosexual teachers constantly mention their spouses and their families, openly flaunt their wedding rings, and have pics of the spouse and family. Talk about shoving it in others' faces! This is simply a case of one person being denied the freedom to speak as openly about his goals for relationship as anyone else.

Why anyone with half a brain would choose to bank with B of A (or any of the larger national banks) is beyond me. They exist only to charge customers for handling their money, money that doesn't belong to the banks but which they get to use to line their own pockets. If anything, banks should be PAYING customers for the privilege of keeping their money. It's a crazy business but if anyone would give it half a thought, they would immediately take their money out of B of A and their kind and place it in community banks and credit unions instead.

KATU - Portland, OR : Officials: Mormon church purposely set on fire | KATU.com - Portland News, Sports, Traffic Weather a

Mormons have known persecution since almost their foundation. It's deplorable that a church of theirs was burnt down. No one should suffer this kind of violence, which is almost assuredly the result of anti-Mormon teachings from well-intentioned but misguided preachers who rail against Mormonism as a cult. That said, I wish only that Mormons would realise - as last week's statement against gay-bashing from LDS headquarters began to show - that their anti-gay speech also leads to violence and persecution against gay members of our society. All churches should lead the way by renouncing teachings that attack or condemn people simply because they are different. Everyone is worthy of respect, regardless of their personal beliefs. Mormons in particular, knowing what it is like to be despised and even killed for their unique beliefs and practices (remember polygamy, which they still believe in but don't practice outside of temple sealings of deceased spouses?) should have affinity for gays and lesbians who suffer the same now.

KATU - Portland, OR : Band volunteer at Vancouver high school charged with sex crimes against students | KATU Communities

It's misleadingly simplistic to dismiss this guy as a sex predator. The story is more complex. In Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia, the age of consent is 16 (with some qualifications in some states). So in more than half the states, 16 is not considered too young to consent. To get technical, under the Washington law (RCW 9A.44.096), the reason this guy is being charged with a crime is not because the girls were 16, but because the girls were at least 16 but not yet 18 AND he is more than 60 months older than they are AND he was in a significant relationship (school volunteer) to the girls, AND he abused a supervisory position within that relationship in order to engage in sex with the girls. Note that the offense is treated as a gross misdemeanor, not a felony. WA law simply recognizes that 16 year olds can choose to have sex (but not with anyone more than 60 months older than they are) and it's not abusive. Oregon law, contrary to Washington, has a simpler rule: no one under the age of 18 is legally able to consent to sex (unless the other party is less than 3 years older). For this purpose they are treated the same as someone who is mentally defective, mentally incapacitated or physically helpless (ORS 163.315). Makes sense to me since teens often come across that way! :)

So you let yourself by tripped up by a label rather than thinking about what I said? If that's the case, then you are a drone. Worse, you clearly don't believe in the freedom of speech that supposedly you are protecting for me. If you did, you would defend my right to a different opinion, rather than asking me to move to a country that has no freedom of speech. In other words, you only believe in freedom of speech for yourself and thus you disgrace the uniform you wear. I was an officer in the Air Force in the 80's and resigned when I came to see that military solutions are too simple of answers. In the end, all the military can do is kill. We need to get out of that mindset, stop the military-industrial complex from calling all the shots (and making the obscene amounts of money they make off of blind patriotism), and train our young people to solve problems not with guns but with creativity, economic progress and education. Those are much, much harder to achieve than killing.

So you believe (1) that American lives are worth making sure you can get gas for your car, (2) that it's the role of America to make the rest of the world follow our values, and (3) that the vets in the wars against Iraq and Afghanistan somehow have anything to do with my free speech, or to put it simply, if they weren't over there there'd be no free speech here. You live in a sad, fantasy world. Unfortunately, the lives that are being thrown away in the mindless flag-waving you support are not fantasy. The tens of thousands of innocent civilians murdered in Iraq and Afghanistan will never enjoy free speech but I'm sure they're happy that you can.

This should be no surprise. Military *by definition* is comprised of people who have no hesitation killing others on command. If you're in for a penny, you're in for a pound. Then bring in people who are mentally weak and unstable and you have a perfect formula for results such as this. This is just the tip of the iceberg but in the never-ending American thirst for oil and power, the Pentagon will continue to cover most of these all up and claim "national security" as its defense. Americans, wake up! Why do you let your tax dollars cause murder and suffering around the world??
