Hilarious. Gutfeld takes to task those who compare their opponents to Hitler -- and then winds up his comments with "Sorry Bernie – look it up. Hitler was one of yours." Sorry, Gut, but you can't pimp for Jonah Goldberg's historically illiterate "liberals are the new Hitler" screed, while simultaneously insisting that when you say “if you disagree with me, then you’re worse than Hitler" you are joking... well, no, actually, you can and wingnuts will not call you out as a hypocrite -- but everyone else will. Bohemond, as you can see from this link (http://www.popculturemadness.com/Trivia/Oscars/To... Apocalypse Now was practically shut out of all the major Oscars, winning only for sound and cinematography (the year was 1979, by the way). The big winner was Kramer vs. Kramer, and as often happens, that one movie sucked all the oxygen out of the room -- it won in every major category for which it was nominated, EXCEPT supporting actor (I suppose even the Academy realized it would have been a bit much to give it to child actor Justin Henry with Duvall AND Mickey Rooney AND Melvyn Douglas as the competition). But the Oscar rarely goes to a genuinely disturbing film like "Apocalypse Now" (or for that matter the death-obsessed musical "All that Jazz," which was also in contention that year). Oscar's preference tends to be for the well-executed but unchallenging -- Kramer vs. Kramer being a perfect example. Another example -- Hoffman won that year for best actor in a role far more conventional than his three previous Oscar-nominated performances in The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy, and Lenny.

Badda, I didn't say the Oscars have "NEVER been about merit" -- I said the Oscars have never been PURELY about merit -- which is to say that even when the winner actually IS the "Best Whatever," the politics of Hollywood still play a part in the choice.

Ironically, Warburton is more of a "stand-up guy" for Trig Palin than Trig's mom, who is only outraged by flippant references to mental disabilities when they come from her political opponents. When they come from Rush, that's just "satire" -- precisely The Family Guy's excuse, and kudos to Warburton for not accepting it.

The Oscars have NEVER been purely about merit -- the politics of the business have always played a role in picking the winner. For instance, "The Departed" was a fine film but hardly Scorsese's best -- the Oscar surely went to him in part for all the great previous work that was overlooked and a sense that it was "his time." "The Hurt Locker" would be Oscar-worthy no matter what the director's gender, but the voters may also think that it is time for a woman to get the honor. This is only a problem for people who believe that merit alone is the reason why every Best Director Oscar thus far has gone to men.
