This adventure and fun and games reality show on MTV is the best reality show by a distance...definitely better than those sugary sappy Saas Bahu serials extolling Indian values(values my foot!!) or those singing reality shows where the whole script including the vulgar fights and the maudlin excess is decided backstage...atleast this reality show is definitely 'Real".... Whether it is the raw uncontrolled aggression of Punjabi girl Palak, or the go-getter mentality of Sufi or the mature balanced outlook of Natasha or the temperamental outbursts of Bobby, this show brings out the entire gamut of emotions on screen, ranging from disappointment at underperforming in a task, jealousy at the success of others, insecurity at the voteouts or the plotting that happens before a voteout... This show truly rocks...and hatss off to Ranvijay and Raghu from a splendid show that keeps us on the edge of our seats..... I guess those bloggers who are cribbing out here are too pansy; and would rather prefer the simpering mauldin excess seen on fake singing reality shows...

'I hate reality TV and what it does to me' March 13, 2009 You have told us how you were bullied in school -- don't you think you're the bullies now, on Roadies? Raghu: Yes, but only to bullies. So many sweet people come and go; we don't do anything to them. Especially women. But if you say something like, 'Oh, I use and throw women,' I'm going to lose it. Bullying is about being alpha males. In that room, we are the alpha males. And I do know some techniques of intimidation. When I was a kid and getting pounded, I was also taking notes (laughs). Rajeev: See, a bully doesn't need reason on his side. He also doesn't engage in conversation. He is violent and will pick on weaker people. When people see a pattern in our behaviour, it's because we are intolerant towards intolerance and we bully bullies. On the other hand, we are very sensitive towards women. We don't have any point to prove, nor do we carry a chip on our shoulders. But if four people have ganged up against one injured girl, we will meet them at their level and surpass them! Whenever we shout and are aggressive, we always give reasons for doing that. If a guy tells us he has six girlfriends and he uses and throws them, we will bully him, and tell him why too! Any tips for future, aspiring contestants? Rajeev: Don't approach the auditions like a job interview, be yourself and don't try too hard. Raghu: Just be original, be interesting -- have an interesting conversation with us, wear some deodorant and nice clothes and speak in Hindi! See, we're older now and not as patient as we used to be. We can't keep listening to the same shit over and over. Next time I think I'll carry a bat with me! What are the changes that a show like Roadies brings about in the contestants' personalities? Rajeev: Roadies is a life-changing experience. Some people become household names. Take Ashutosh, for instance. Who else would have cast a Saharanpur dhaba kind? Only we did -- and look at him. Roadies provides a platform to show one's potential. Intense experiences like the ones the Roadies go through are bound to shape you and change you in ways that others won't be able to relate to. But you will definitely change. Raghu: You cannot go through an experience as intense as Roadies without going through some amount of introspection and analysis of yourself. By and large, we see people coming out of the experience more confident. But sometimes, some people's confidence gets shattered too. What are your future plans? Rajeev: I don't know. I want to make a movie someday. There is no plan. I'm a Django who packs up just because! Raghu: I'm so tired! I want to go to the Himalayas for six months and write my book and some songs. Look at me -- I look like a panda that belongs in a zoo! I work 7 days a week, 20 hours a day! I hate reality TV and what it does to me.

'Don't talk about Indian culture, it's my pet hate' March 13, 2009 Do you think Rajeev is seen simply as an extension to Raghu, rather than a separate person on the show? Rajeev: Perception is not my problem -- it exists and is possibly the toughest animal to fight. Roadies is Raghu's show and has been so long that the show and Raghu have both shaped each other's personalities! I have similar traits, but no matter what I say, comparisons will be drawn, and they will be unfavourable to me. But it doesn't bother me -- we are both extensions of one another at some level. Raghu: I can't account for people's perceptions, so I don't know. As far as I can see, he has an individual personality. Yes, there are similarities, but he brings stuff to the table that I never could. His observations are very cutting; I'm less tactful than him and he has a wicked sense of humour. Other than our looks, I don't think he's an extension of me. Otherwise, it was bound to happen, no? The marketing will be focused towards using the fact that we're twins, to make it seem like we're two of a kind, but that's only limited to the marketing. And then many siblings have similar personalities. In twins, it's a bit more, and even more in identical twins. But there are differences, of course. Splitsvilla -- with it's theme of having 20 girls compete for the affections of two guys -- was criticised on the grounds that the concept goes against Indian values. Can you comment on that? Raghu: Who are these people? Who are the owners of Indian culture? Don't talk about Indian culture -- it's my pet hate. Who said this? It must be Muthalik, and of course, he must be right! This is just an excuse for bigotry, violence and power mongering. We had kings with harems in our culture -- the most famous structure built by a man for a woman is the Taj Mahal, built by a man who had a harem of 3000 women and spent his life sobbing after the one that died. You know, we don't allow the kids to smoke or drink on the show -- I think I'm much better than these people! Isn't it better than crazy things like honour killings, where they murder their own children if they marry someone of their own choice? Rajeev: What's un-Indian about it? Indian kings had harems; polygamy was part of Indian society too. I'm not saying Splitsvilla is either like a harem situation or a polygamous one, but if those things were accepted, why not this show? And then what's cultural about any TV show? We're here to make youth television. The youth and MTV share a symbiotic relationship. They both affect one another. Unlicensed thrill, romance and style are some aspects that are huge among the youth. So our shows will reflect that. It's true that we are pushing the boundaries on many moral standards but I will not entertain views of our shows being against Indian culture. And its also rubbish that if you show the youth something on TV they will immediately go out and emulate it. They are far too clever for that!

'You can get Shah Rukh Khan but you can't get his twin brother!' March 13, 2009 How did you start working with MTV? Rajeev: It's been quite a ride. Raghu and I are both college drop-outs. We quit when I flunked twice. We're very close and hardly had any separate friends, so in college our parents encouraged us to take different courses so we could make individual friends. But then when I flunked, we both decided to drop out. Our father was quite worried -- in fact, he was thinking of opening a shop for us. Then I worked with TV 18, and then MTV when they re-launched in India and wanted indigenous programming. After that I did a year of radio but the satellite was never launched, so then I did a stint with Channel V. After that I worked with a production house called Miditech, and ended up producing some shows for MTV. Then I tried my hand at ads and Raghu had joined MTV. By this time, we were missing one another, so I decided to join MTV too. Now I've quit MTV and am working as the Creative Director of Colosceum Media, which does shows for various channels. Raghu and I still manage to find ways to work together, like now we're going to do a show called Splitsvilla (Season Two) together. Raghu: My stint with MTV began in 1996 with this talk show called Get a Voice. I was a trainee in a production house called TV18. Over the years, though Rajeev and I worked in different production houses, we ended up being involved in shows for MTV. Actually, I once quit my job in Delhi and came to Mumbai saying that I wanted to work for MTV, but they rejected me! So that was that. I couldn't understand it (laughs). So then I did odd jobs here and there -- worked with the BBC for an AIDS awareness show, which is when I heard that a show called Roadies is being planned. And it's about bikes and travel. Next thing I know, I get a call saying, 'Hey man, do you wanna come make this show?' Why was it decided to get Rajeev on Roadies? Raghu: To begin with, I was very against the auditions being telecast. Because then people come prepared, trying to portray themselves as certain 'types', but then if they sit back through the show, what value is that? Do you understand how difficult it makes my job? So every year we will change the game and up the stakes somehow to catch people off guard. This year, the time had come for something drastic because Roadies Five was a great success. It was Rannvijay Singh's (the winner of Season One, and host of Roadies now) idea to bring Rajeev on. And only Roadies can have this twist, no? Nobody else can -- you can get Shah Rukh Khan but you can't get his twin brother! Rajeev: See, twins always work. The idea of putting us together was always in people's heads. I was always part of the Roadies selection process, but from behind the scenes. At that time, we felt that my being there would be a distraction. Roadies is Raghu's show. Then, when it became popular, Rannvijay suggested that the time was right to introduce me as well. Also, MTV has launched a marketing initiative called Roadies Cheat Code, which helps people to crack the auditions. So we had to find something new to change our game. People had started seeing patterns, and we needed to shake things up a bit. The trick was to bring me in, instead of Nikhil (Chinappa). He is still very much part of the show, but not on air.

'Roadies has become a badge of approval -- people have forgotten that it's a show, not a personality test' March 13, 2009 On one episode of Roadies Season Five, one of the guys slapped a girl on the show. What was that about? Rajeev: That was totally unexpected. The task was for a boy to convince one of the girls in his group to be slapped by him. Now, the way the groups had been divided, we knew all the girls in that group hated the boy. So we thought it would be next to impossible for him to convince the girls to be slapped. Instead, the girls were falling over themselves to volunteer! It was totally unexpected. And then we got pissed off because the boy really whacked the girl hard across her face. That's just not done. But yes, it did happen on the show and we take responsibility for it. Raghu: It was a mistake. In the finale, there were two boys left, and we brought back the rest of the Roadies for the last bit. And the point was for each of the boys to convince his teammates to do tasks that would make him win. The tasks were difficult -- 'Kiss an iguana', 'Get your nipples pierced', 'Shave your head' etc. One task was to get slapped by the captain of the team. Our guess was that people would not come forward to do the task, because there was enough animosity between them. But we were surprised when people started falling over themselves to do the tasks! Later, they told us that it was their last chance to prove themselves as a Roadie. Once the girl, Shambhavi, volunteered, we couldn't interfere. They completely misread the situation and we didn't anticipate it. I underestimated the power of the show on the psyche of the contestants. But later we apologised to her, made Ashu (the boy who slapped her) grovel for days, and got her to slap both Ashutosh and Nihal (the two finalists last year) for good measure! What do you look for in a Roadie? Rajeev: We are looking at individuals, but also at group dynamics. We want interesting people who will react interestingly to the other contestants. They have to be reactive, because it's important for the viewers to know what they're thinking. For instance, if a contestant is upset about something, and doesn't express it, it will affect the story and possibly vote outs, but the viewers won't know what happened. So it's important that they be reactive and expressive. That's why a lot of North Indians get selected -- because they are more moohfat than most others. Raghu: It's changed from year to year. Reality television dictates some things. If you're honest about how you're making a show, you won't allow the contestants to even talk to you. You're dependant on the contestants for whatever content they give you. Since we have done our homework and cast people, we can't do anything beyond that, except shoot. So they should be reactive, interesting to watch, strong personalities and different. Roadies has become a badge of approval -- people have forgotten that it's a show, not a personality test. But now I've given up explaining to them because they will think whatever they want to. It's become bigger than a show now -- which is great, I can't complain. But I'm very clear about the fact that I'm casting for a show. People sometimes ask me, 'Why Devarshi? He doesn't have Roadie qualities.' Come on, man -- didn't you have great fun watching him? What are 'Roadie qualities'? Getting Michael Phelps to do a swimming task is no fun. But getting someone who has a fear of water to jump into a pool is television. That's Roadies.

I never thought this was an original idea. I thought they only mixed "The Amazing Race" and "Fear Factor" and only added vote outs to it. Of course now I see a third angle to it "MTV Road Rules". So it was never an original Idea anyway.

'What you see on the show is one aspect of our personalities. That's obviously not the only aspect' March 13, 2009 How different are you in real life? Rajeev: Well, like I said, I'm aggressive in real life towards people who are unfair, bullies or prejudiced. Having said that, I have a wife and son, who I am extremely civil to! So it's not like I'm bursting with aggression and lashing out at everyone. Our aggression comes from having grown up in a tough neighbourhood. Rahgu and I grew up in Delhi, in an area called Munirka. Our neighbourhood boys consisted of the kind whose daily recreational activity consisted of Chal, ladkiyan chhedte hain aur ladke peette hain. I mean, if they didn't do that for one day, they'd start getting withdrawal symptoms! Now in such a situation, collisions are bound to happen -- which they did, on a regular basis. And Raghu and I had to be tough to stand our own. In school too, we were short, thin and wore glasses, back in the day when glasses were geeky, not cool. So we were easy targets and got bullied regularly. So now we don't take it lying down. As kids we got thumped a lot, until we grew bigger and started to give it back. Our group was like a band of boys against the rest of the world. We have seen mob mentality and the misuse of power, but always stood our ground. And naturally, more often than not, ended up paying the price for it. Raghu: What you see on the show is one aspect of our personalities. That's obviously not the only aspect. At home we're different, at work we're different. But if in that same situation, we will react the same way. If I get into an argument with someone, I can out-shout anyone. Rajeev is actually quite a clown. He's the wittiest person I know -- there's never a dull moment when he's around. I'm a wannabe musician, so by that logic I'm more sensitive at the same time. But you obviously don't see those sides of us on the show because there's no requirement for it. The show is not about us. You have been criticised for encouraging the wrong kind of attitude -- bitching and backbiting? Raghu: I think people should just go and get a life! Who are they to criticise me? For encouraging what? Is there a difference between showing and encouraging stuff? Are newspapers encouraging rapes, murders and terrorism? What's the logic? I think they can go f*** themselves -- I don't care! Please quote me! Rajeev: We are not encouraging anything. There is nothing stopping them from saying, 'Okay, so one of us has to go every week -- let's just draw chits and have no hard feelings.' Instead, human nature is to plot and scheme to save your own a***, so that's what they're doing on the show. In fact, we often take them aside and tell them to tone down the aggression a little. We're against violence and try to ensure it doesn't happen. If it does happen, however, it has to be shown, because that incident then affects the story. We only encourage them to do their tasks. In fact, last year Raghu told the two winners, 'You have won not by doing any tasks, but because of politics and backbiting. So you may have won the show and the money, but you'll never win my respect.'

MTV Roadies 7 : Africa : MTV Roadies : Raghu Ram : On Roadies and MTV

I am intolerant to intolerance': Roadies hosts Raghu & Rajeev get candid March 13, 2009 We know them as the two bad, bald guys on MTV -- the ones who host reality shows Roadies and Splitsvilla, grilling the contestants and bringing excitement and controversy to the shows for viewers. Raghu Ram has been around since the inception of Roadies, the popular reality travel show wherein contestants take a road trip across India and abroad on motorbikes and compete in various dares and challenges (they vote out the least popular contestants from amongst themselves at the end of each week). Rajeev Laxman, his twin brother, recently joined him to make this season of Roadies: Hell Down Under real hell! If you thought one was torture, two are a catastrophe waiting to happen. However, there is more to the brothers than the lean, mean side we see on television. Insiyah Vahanvaty catches up with them to find out more. Let's start off with the question topmost in your audience's mind -- what's with the tough attitude on Roadies? Rajeev: Since Roadies is a reality show, we place an unbelievable premium on the cast. Because once the contestants are selected, it's them who will make the show. We need a certain kind of cast -- people who are reactive, expressive and not too introverted. Once on the show, they are told not to interact with us at all -- to the extent that if they are walking and see us coming towards them, they're supposed to turn around and walk back. We want to keep them isolated to an extent, interacting with each other only, not bringing their problems to us. As for the toughness, well, that's pretty much who we are. The way Raghu and I react to certain situations may seem aggressive and tough, but that's who we are. If we want our contestants to be real, it's only fair that we meet them midway, and be real ourselves. We get really pissed off if people are disrespectful towards women, or any other section of people. And I hate it when people make statements like, 'It's against the Indian culture'. Most of the problems in this country arise from prejudices like these. When faced with this stuff during the auditions, we lose it. But, contrary to popular belief, it's not a put-on for the cameras. In fact, I'd go as far as to say I'm actually tougher in real life. We've been known for our boorish behaviour long before the show came about (laughs). We're always aggressive with people like this. Another reason for 'uncalled-for' aggression is to test a person. To see how s/he will react under pressure. Also, many people come for the auditions trying to be who they think we want them to be. So we sometimes get aggressive to see if the nice guy act is real. We're always watching their reactions very closely to bring out their character and see if they are cast-worthy. When I say 'cast-worthy', I mean right for the show. It's in no way meant to be a stamp of approval for one's character. Raghu: You are defining it as a tough attitude, we are not. I wouldn't say it's aggression as much as passion. But if the situation warrants it, it comes out a little aggressively, since it's not put on. If you were to pay attention to when I sound aggressive, you'd be able to point out the reason for it too. I have strong points of view about society, culture, what is permissible and what is not, about attitudes and things that have led to many of the problems around us. Till these attitudes don't change, the problems wont go away either. These things infuriate me. I have very close personal knowledge of bullies, bigots and hypocrites. If you're the kind of person that thinks homosexuals are retarded, then neither do you know anything about homosexuals, nor are you interested in finding out, because the topic repulses you. In that case, I think it would be useless for me to try and reason with you. A strong viewpoint has to be met with a stronger viewpoint. A loud voice has to be countered with a louder voice, according to me. I am intolerant to intolerance, which is why I often lose my temper. Political debates that I have with my friends are also loud and aggressive. It's who I am. On Roadies, the situations we have engineered are designed to bring out certain emotions and test certain behaviours and attitudes. Like, in the last episode a bunch of contestants ganged up on a wounded girl, so Rajeev and I got really pissed and screamed our heads off at them. The exercise was to see if they do the obvious thing -- which is to bully people. They would have won my respect if they would have said, 'Let's not do it -- let's just stay as a team and we'll see what happens.' Sometimes on the auditions we really like someone and just want to be sure. So we lose our tempers over a seemingly small thing to see how they react to it.

MTV Roadies Raghu Ram was given his first solo project at MTV, in the year 2000. The show was tentatively titled MTV: Find The Road. The show, originally, was to revolve around contestants traveling around the country on their motorcycles, using clues and hints provided on the show. The concept of clues, however, was eventually replaced with tasks and challenges. The shows format initially faced severe criticism from the MTV heads due to its vulgar content, audience value and also it's name, but was later given the green light as an "experimental show that could go off-air anytime".[citation needed] The name of the show was later changed to MTV Roadies.
