Kyubey's shady practices go far, far beyond anything Nita's gone through, heh.

The most fundamental difference is that here we have an actual antagonist in the Lone Power, a Satan figure who gives a face to the threat of "entropy", who these kids are being recruited to fight against.

In Madoka, the closest thing there is to an antagonist is Kyubey, a Mephistopheles-type figure whose ostensibly noble goals are accomplished by recruiting children for the alleged purpose of fighting threats that Kyubey is ultimately responsible for, and whose ultimate fate is death at best and an eternal hell born from their own subconscious at worst.

If you put the Lone Power and Kyubey in a steel cage match I'm honestly not sure which one I'd root for.

In any case, you really should watch Madoka if you can. Even if you're heavily spoiled, it's still a very good show.

Hey, the bunnycat just wants to reduce entropy to keep the universe from dying. Isn't that what we're all about right now?

I mean, Kyubey doesn't understand why humans make so much fuss about confusing and irrelevant concepts like "empathy" or "informed consent", but aside from that!

I've seen a few other edits of that image but that one's probably my favorite. This one is my second favorite.

And even better, that Lilith is.

I can't find a reference for this now in the amount of time I have to search, but I remember reading at some point that the cultural expectations in question regarding fathers are something that primarily came into being around or after WW2, and that Anno belongs to what's basically the first generation of children who grew up with that sort of extreme paternal detachment.

Given how ridiculously influential Evangelion has been, I suppose it's entirely possible that Gendo's character has measurably contributed to the current backlash against those cultural norms. :)

...for some reason I can't help but feel Misato should have odango hair in that image.

One would kinda hope so, but--as Anno has repeatedly discovered--the Evangelion fanbase possesses a nigh-unlimited ability to disappoint.
