GazetteOnline.com : Industrial users reducing water usage, cut city revenues

That's a great idea and one that more people should be doing. There is no reason to water your garden or yard with treated water. Not only would it eliminate the waste of water pulled from the aquifer and unnecessary treatment, it would reduce urban runoff and cut your water/sewer bill.

GazetteOnline.com : Johnson County communications center chief faces drunk driving charge

Nice to see this guy stood up and took responsibility for his actions and didn't try to lie his way out. unfortunately, no matter what the police may say, the prosecutor will look at this case as a slam dunk and he will get a harsher penalty than someone who takes the other path and gets a plea bargain.

GazetteOnline.com : Redmond Park neighbors ‘take back’ park for kids

While I totally agree with running off those who are trashing the place, deciding to run off any "upper teens and early-20s crowd" seems wrong. If they aren't causing a problem other than gathering, then they have just as much right to be in a public space as anyone else. Teens and early 20's hang out...that's what they do. I'd rather see them hanging out in a park than in a bar. Maybe another solution would have been to approach them as a neighborhood group and tell them flat out that they are welcome to hang out in the park if they don't trash it. That if they are going to be up to illegal activity, then the police will be involved. Stop over and visit with them once in awhile...you know, like neighbors do. Sure some won't want to talk, but if there are enough, some will.

GazetteOnline.com : Linn County man wants boat back after flood demolition

I don't think they have to say anything. It's their property, they offered him a more than fair deal. If they cave on this boat, what happens when someone starts whining about their photo album. These companies get salvage rights for a reason. It allows them to recycle, producing less landfill and keeping their costs down so they can come in at a lower bid for the work. Bottom line, he was paid for his property, which includes everything in it at closing...no different than any other property sale.

GazetteOnline.com : Commission votes to save Sinclair smokestack

In hindsight, if the city/commission was so worried about the historical relevance of this place, why didn't they restore some of the buildings and turn them into high dollar, riverview, loft condos years ago before they fell into total disrepair? As for the stack, so they fix it now only for it to become a liability later (think playing kids from the multi-family housing, or threat of it falling down due to lack of maintenance). That makes no sense.

GazetteOnline.com : Obama: 'The place where change began'

Everyone loves to call it the "health care reform" bill. It doesn't change health care, it changes health insurance. Yes they are related, but they are definitely not the same thing. There are no real health care reforms here. Seems like we are getting fooled again... What are the details. Sure, no pre-existing condition clauses, premiums constrained based on your income, coverage for the poorest...but what kind of coverage?. I haven't heard anything about deductible or co-insurance. If you set the premium, then something else has to give. Are we looking at $25K deductibles...or 50/50 plans...or worse? Don't get me wrong, I hope it is a step in the right direction, but the devil is in the details...and insurance company stock prices are going up for a reason...

GazetteOnline.com : More transparency for cab companies

Gouging is a serious problem in the IC area. The same ride that you pay $10 for at 8pm, will cost you $30 at 2am. As a customer, your options are limited and the abusive drivers know it. Refuse to pay whatever figure the driver magically comes up with, and they threaten to call the police knowing that any normal person who has been drinking will pay up to avoid an incident.

There's where the picture comes in handy....allowing you to go back to the dealership/mechanic with the picture and date/timestamp and demand they not only take care of the citation, but take whatever steps to restore your record or compensate you for the damage. Right now, you'd have no idea the "miscreant" was abusing your vehicle. As for the public records issue...that's just another win for the public.
