Race Relations Project : Those Dolls Say Alot About Who We Are

The doll video disturbed even me as a white woman. I was in utter shock seeing all those little children pick the white doll over the black doll because the white doll was seen as “good” and the black doll was seen as “bad.” It is incredible how much information can enter a child’s psyche and influence how they see good and bad. After seeing that video I paid more attention to advertisements and television in general and I never noticed how ordinarily white most of television is. No that being white is a bad thing and the fact that television and media in general is predominantly white never really affected me because I am white. I wonder if people of color even notice the difference at first. Obviously they do subconsciously when they are younger than they must notice it eventually. For example, black girls in my class said that their parents wouldn’t let them have white dolls and they didn’t understand at first. But the reason is clear. These children knew they were black and still picked the white doll and not the black doll because the black doll was supposedly “bad.” Minorities must go through awakening and the anger stage to realize that the whole world was designed with white in mind. Imagine growing up in a world where you don’t look like anyone else and the people you do look like are stereotyped in such a negative manner that you have no choice but to prove the stereotype to be true. I don’t know what that’s like. So when black people say that white people are ignorant to the struggles and problems of people I color I cant really argue with them. I grew up with all white friends in a predominantly white school in an Irish catholic neighborhood. My only real experience with black people my age were the ones that went to the nearest public school down the block from my house and they weren’t the kindest to white girls in catholic school uniforms. Maybe it was the anger or resentment that I didn’t understand but it must be frustrating to live in a world where you are looked at differently just because you fit the negative stereotype of your race. I didn’t understand why they shouted things at us or even would run full force into a group of us to see if we would scatter, and we would. We would look at them with such confusion that it probably fueled more anger. They didn’t understand us we didn’t understand them and it shouldn’t be like that. After taking this class I can see things a little differently. How living in a world designed for someone else in mind must be very hard.

Race Relations Project : This is totally off the hook

I think this game is a disgrace, as do most people I’m sure. I’m just not that surprised that Japan would release a game that graphic. I feel like in other cultures pornographic images are more public. They are used in commercials and magazines. The only thing is that this video game isn’t just pornographic its violently pornographic. The thing is you can Google this kind of pornography and nothing is done about that but selling it is frowned upon. In the video it said nothing about an age limit and it looked like they were in a space that was open to the public no matter the age. I don’t buy the reasoning that says it is an outlet for potential rapists. What the hell does that even mean? I’m sorry but this game is only going to fuel potential rapists and give current rapists the option to virtually rape someone when they aren’t out actually raping women. This game has nothing positive going for it, but most video games don’t. Grand Theft Auto, for example, has the option to beat up strippers. That’s offensive towards women too. Everything’s offensive towards women and the only people that care about women’s rights are women. Women’s right activists may be able to change some things for the better, and they have done a lot for women, but they aren’t going to change everything. You can’t please everyone. I don’t really understand why women’s rights activists from the U.S. are going ape shit about this game when it isn’t even being sold in the U.S. I know that just the fact that it exists means it is readily available online for anyone with an internet connection, but so is a lot of really foul and disgusting things. It just creeps me out that guys get off on forcing themselves on girls who obviously want nothing to do with them. It must come from years of never getting any and now they’re still not getting any because rape has become virtual. I could definitely see guys downloading this game with their friends and playing for fun. But isn’t that sort of gay? A bunch of guys sitting around getting turned on together while virtually harassing a woman is pretty pathetic and creepy. That’s what this game is though, pathetic and creepy. I mean I’m not saying that pornography is gross in general but when it comes to the physical and mental harassment of another human being than there is something wrong with that. I guess my whole point to this blog entry is that I believe that this game is wrong and it shouldn’t be sold in a regular gaming store with other games. It’s just going to condition people for a young age that this is an acceptable way to express sex, when it clearly isn’t.

Race Relations Project : The White Minorities

The theory that white people could possibly be the minority is rather frightening. As a white person I never really questioned or noticed how many white people there are around me, on television, in books, and in movies. I don’t think that this change will happen as soon as everyone thinks and I think it will be a gradual change that many people will only notice if they saw the change happen in their lifetime. What will happen in white people are the minority? Will we finally have to feel the minorities do? Which is underappreciated, neglected, or treated unfairly. I feel like the reason for this change is because it is becoming more acceptable for people to have interracial relationships, which is making mixed race children more and more common. There is a higher birthrate in minorities and a lower birthrate in white births. I’m sure this recent discovery is scaring the pants off of the older white generation. White people have been “on top” so to speak for as long as history can remember. White people have never been in the position of being the less populated race in America. Watching the videos of the black children picking a white doll over a black doll shows how being the minority affects them a lot more than anyone thinks, even them. Putting myself in that position is odd. Thinking that I would pick a black doll over a white doll because I thought it was prettier because that was the world has been telling me since I was born is unreal to me. Is that what would eventually happen to the white population if this pattern keeps up? The fact that minorities have higher birth rates has a lot to do with their culture and how a lot of them grow up. I feel like you see women who live in bad neighborhoods or ghettos with a lot of children. They start having their children at a very young age, mostly while in high school which causes them to drop out and perpetuate the cycle. Most of these women are also minorities. I’m not saying all these women are minorities because some of the girls in my high school had more than one kid before graduation and these girls were white. A lot of women statistically who live in ghettos are minorities. These women keep having kids but these kids don’t make it out of the ghetto for the most part. So although there will be more minorities in the United States, which I guess will make them the majority, I don’t think the older white population should be fearing a take over. More rich people are white which means they will have rich kids who are white who will also be rich and the same cycle goes for poor people who are mostly minorities.

Race Relations Project : In Her Own Words

I thought her video was very inspiring and I wasn’t offended when Sam talked about his wife’s period. I know a lot of women were offended or disgusted by the subject of monthly bleeding. Maybe Sam’s approach to it was a little graphic and surprising but I understood and appreciated what he was trying to say. As much as I hate my period and was glad I didn’t get until I was fourteen, it’s a special part of being a woman. If not for that bleeding no man or woman would exist. Woman are ashamed to talk about it in front of men and I understand why. The only reason I do is to get a disgusted reaction or bother my family or male friends. I can even bother my female friends by talking about my monthly cycle. It has been a taboo and gross subject since as long as I learned what it was. Men can talk about their bodily functions but when a woman wants to say something about their monthly cycle men get this look like they are going to vomit. Probably because it doesn’t happen to them, but I don’t get erections yet I still hear about them more than I hear about bleeding. Honestly it is gross, even for women. It is also extremely uncomfortable, but without it there would be no children, no procreation no life. It is also a very awkward and uncomfortable time in a girl’s life when she first gets it. I remember I had an extremely hard time because it happened very fast and there was a lot. My mother tried to calm me down but all I could think about was that for seven days every month this is going to happen to me. Could I pass out from the loss of blood? It was a legit concern and sometimes I still wonder how this can be possible. Now that I am older and have recently given this some thought I believe that getting your period isn’t a curse, it’s a blessing in disguise. We might bitch and moan about it and we have a right to. If a man had to deal with this I bet women would hear about it ten times more. I don’t blame men for being annoyed or confused or even disgusted by it because most really don’t know much about it. Most men don’t know much about the vagina in general. I’m sure if it was the other way around and men had blood coming out of their penis I would not want to hear about it either. I just think it would be nice if boys know that we can’t help it, we can’t control it and that it is annoying they would understand why we get grumpy when we have it. And like Sam said if boys just comply and be nice and complain about how we are being bitchy, life would go a lot smoother for those seven days. Also if a boy is reading this I’m sorry if it was gross but I hope it was educational. :)

Race Relations Project : Prom or No Prom: Just Don't Let the Queer Students Dance Together

I don’t understand the big deal of having same sex dates at a school dance. A prom is a big event for a young girl whether she is interested in boys or girls. I went to an all girl catholic high school and there were lesbians that attended the school that were out of the closet. They weren’t aloud to bring female dates, but I think that situation is a little different than girls at a public high school not being able to show and be proud of their sexuality. When you attend a catholic high school there are rules of the catholic faith that must be followed. Practicing homosexuality is against those rules. No matter how unfair that might be people know that before they enter a catholic school. If they don’t like that or believe in that they can leave and go somewhere that will let them express their sexuality. This public school in Mississippi has no right to tell that girl she can’t bring a female date or wear a tux. I know Mississippi is a little dates and stuck in their old ways a little bit but the girl is a lesbian and has proudly been out of the closet since eighth grade. It is probably publicly known in her high school and I’m sure all her teachers know that she is a lesbian. The fact that the only way she could attend the prom was if she brought a male date, which was used to get in and meet up with her girlfriend. She also wasn’t aloud to dance or hold hands with her girlfriend once she got there. Also, if any of her peers felt uncomfortable about her being there than she would get kicked out. I understand that this prom isnt all about her but why should her being there with her girlfriend bother everyone so much? You are there with your date and your friends having a good time, why would you worry about what this lesbian is doing. She has every right to be there just as much as a straight person. The only solution to this mess was to cancel the prom all together which caused this girl even more grief because now all of her classmates hate her. I don’t know if this was some cruel way of punishing her for being gay and bringing attention to herself but it’s preposterous. She has every right to bring this problem to the medias attention because it shouldn’t be aloud. Its completely unfair. Why should a straight person be aloud to have a great time at prom when this girl has rules she has to follow just because she’s gay? Its not like she chose to go through this, because life would be a lot easier for her is she was straight.

Race Relations Project : Fired for a Scarf

I am honestly not surprised that Hollister or Abercrombie and Fitch would discriminate against someone that looks slightly different than a skinny white girl. I’ve known people that worked at those clothing stores and if they had a blemish on their face they would be sent to work in the back rooms. The part I don’t understand is that they were fully aware that she would be wearing her head scarf and condoned it. Out of nowhere they just decided that it was against the rules to wear anything on an employees head. The fact that it isn’t the first time they have discriminated against minorities before does not surprise me. I have seen black employees and both stores but I feel like you have to be very attractive to get a job working out front where customers are, which is sickening. If you look at the advertisements for those stores and the models who’s pictures are hanging up in the store are usually Caucasian and very good looking. They might try and say they would like to be more culturally diverse but I don’t believe a word of it. Not letting a girl practice her religion because it makes her look different is the complete opposite of being culturally diverse. I think these clothing stores need to stop being so hypocritical. Do they think people won’t buy clothes from them if they have someone who looks a little different working there? If that is the case than they are just ignorant people. The people that work there aren’t even helpful or friendly so maybe a change from rich snobby white kids to something different is a good idea. I’m not saying all employees for those two stores are rich snobby white kids but I have experienced that many times while shopping at both stores. I just think stores like that are so one minded. They can’t look at the big picture. People of different races shop at stores like this so wouldn’t it be a good marketing idea to have people like them working at those stores. I’ve had experiences of being uncomfortable shopping in those stores and I’m a white girl. It’s intimidating, I can’t imagine working there. I think she had a lot of guts to apply and work there while wearing her head wrap. A lot of people wouldn’t understand and judge her. The fact that she had the guts to work there and they shot her down is disgraceful. Being proud of your heritage and religion is something more Americans should learn to do. Christians don’t get fired for wearing a cross around their neck, why should her head wrap be any different? I think the complaint she filed against Abercrombie and Fitch should be a wake up call to that store and all clothing stores that being fired for something you believe in will not be taken lightly.

Race Relations Project : Could You Compete With This Woman On A Level Playing Field?

That was a truly devastating story that is probably one of thousands of devastating financial stories coming out of Haiti. Being such an entrepreneur in such a low class and poor society is truly inspiring and it makes you wonder what kind of potential people from third world countries have if just given the opportunity. The fact that she has mastered all these business principles and manages her business so thoroughly is very impressive. The fact that she lost everything in the earthquake besides the bank payment is truly depressing. She couldn’t catch a break even after a massive earthquake hit and destroyed her home. Money is everything in this world, even in places who don’t have a lot. They still expect to get paid on time by a person who has lost everything. I hope the money that the U.S. is giving to Haiti will also be used to help the citizens with individual problems. What is the bank going to do if she can’t pay? It’s not like she has anything to repossess. Her lively hood right now is selling chicken necks out of a plastic tub to people who have no money. She’s really down on her luck so I hope the prayers people are saying for Haitians will help out Yvrose in any way possible. I can’t imagine the loss these people are going through. Losing virtually everything including family members and friends. The fact that this woman is still fighting for some money through everything she has went through is truly admirable. If Yvrose had the kind of opportunities I have now; to be in college and have money saved up, than I think she would be the type of person to start and join organizations. She would probably excel in math and business classes. She would probably be way better at accounting than I am, but that really isn’t saying much. All I’m saying is that the world is not a fair place. People are born into situations and have to make the best of them. Yvrose is doing just that. She is in one of the worst situations right now and she is doing everything to make it a little better. It’s inspirational and it makes me feel like a lazy, ungrateful American. I hope her children know how hard she is trying to keep their heads above water, literally. I think the best thing to do after hearing this story is thank your lucky stars for everything you have and make the best of the opportunities you are given. We are given much more than we actually appreciate and we use less than what we are actually given. So in conclusion, good luck Yvrose and God bless you and all of Haiti.

Race Relations Project : The XXX Bible? Who Would've Thought?

I really enjoyed reading that article. It is so interesting that when you go really in depth into a piece of writing or scripture from mythology or religion how many things you can find out. It makes sense that to create Eve, Adam had used a phallic symbol. When I look back at biblical stories that I once took literally when I was in Catholic grade school, I see them and understand them as mythological stories. When I took a mythology class my freshman year the most common way to create life was with some sort of phallic symbol or metaphor for ejaculating. So why should the bible be any different? Eve was made from a penis bone, which is interesting to think about. People that take the bible literally would not appreciate the theory of Eve, the mother of all women and men, being made from the primary male organ. What does that say about women? I guess we all have a little bit of men in us. Well good thing I don’t take the bible seriously because I would be even more confused with gender types than I already am after Sam’s lecture on Tuesday. The most ironic thing about this whole thing is that according to this theory the bible is full of sexual innuendos, rape, incest, homosexuality, etc. With all these sinful things that were done by biblical figures, isn’t it strange that they are the sins the bible explicitly prohibits? Hypocrisy is nothing new to Catholics and Christians that follow the bible, but it’s probably a slap in the face to strict followers that have read that article or seen those books. Not that I really feel bad for them, it is never smart to follow any religion with out questioning it. Those that do become one minded and irrational. I also think looking too deep into scriptures like the Old Testament you could start looking too deep into things. What I mean by this is that you could start going so deep that you are interpreting literal things into something more than what they are. Maybe it really was a rib that created Eve. Or better yet, who cares? We all know that with the concept of evolution Adam and Eve never existed. Also, the concept that man was first and used his penis or rib bone to make all of womankind is not only sexist but creepy. The bible is full of contradictions and racism and sexism. It is a book that when take literally could actually be dangerous. I think it is an entertaining and interesting way to look back on the traditions of an earlier time, but taking it literally is childish and ignorant.

Race Relations Project : Why Is the Conversation Always About Black and White People?

I agree completely that most of racial discussions involves the black and white sides. It is something to think about but maybe its just an American thing. If you think about it the problems that black and white people have had with each other has been so ingrained in history and our minds that other races seem to get pushed to the back of our minds. From slavery to the civil rights movement and integration, black and white people have had an ongoing battle for hundreds of years that isn’t easy to ignore. But it is strange that we haven’t had as many discussions about Native Americans. We were just as cruel if not crueler to them, yet we hear nothing about Native American rights or they’re plight. It is also the media. The media makes movies, songs, TV show topics about the problems between the two races. There is even a month dedicated to black people. Which I do not have a problem with whatsoever, but it just seems that black people talk about their hardships and they are more open to the knowledge of the public that their problems with white people and white people’s problems with them are more known. So when we discuss race the first thing that comes to mind is black and white. Even in our group discussions, the topic always switches to the differences of black and white people and how they interact and deal with each other. It is a very interesting topic to bring up because you really don’t think about it. You just get used to talking more about those two races than anything else. Also, maybe the two races just have to interact more than other races so more racial issues arise between the two more often than others. I know from personal experience as being a white person, that I have interacted more with black people than Hispanic or Asian people in my lifetime. There will always be more hostility and issues between the two races and even if there is no legitimate reason for this, it is still true. Maybe its not fair to other races who are being ignored or pushed into the blurry brown background where all the other races are, but I feel like it is just the way it is and there will be no changing it. Is it really even a problem? Are people offended that they don’t get as much lime light as black and white people? I don’t think that’s the problem. I honestly don’t think it’s a problem at all. The reason black and white comes into the conversation so often is because those two races, who have gone through so much, have a long way to go in order to find peace. If they ever find peace at all.

Race Relations Project : Avatar and the White Man's Burden

I was a huge fan of Avatar when I saw it in IMAX 3D. You can’t say the movie wasn’t entertaining and being a source of entertainment is what a movies purpose is. Critics act like this “White Messiah Complex” is the only reused plot line in movies. There are stories about love and violence and family problems that have been reused and outplayed way more than the theme of Avatar. In my opinion I think this theme in movies is one of the most heart warming and moving. It shows a passion and a realization of other cultures and their rights and purpose. The fact that people find this offensive on the poor native part that needs protection from this “white Messiah” is ridiculous. If its offensive to anyone is the white man. Every movie that has had this complex has made the white man or America look like the selfish bad guy, while the natives are super cool and calm. Of course they would need saving by a white man if the white man is the one attacking them. It all makes perfect sense. Think about it; during the movie who are you rooting for to die and who are you rooting for to win? Because personally I was thinking about how cool it would be if I could be a super tall, muscular avatar. People are too sensitive about racial injustice in movies that they have to point out something bad with American culture once again. The movie grossed an insane amount of money and got excellent reviews, as did the movies with a similar theme before it. I just completely disagree with the racist issue in this complex and I just don’t think race has to be brought into everything we watch, read or talk about. White, Black, Asian, Hispanic, etc. have paid to go see this movie and most of them probably were just as entertained as everyone else. The peaceful natives wouldn’t need a white messiah if the natives weren’t battling white devils. The best way to know and beat your enemy is to have inside information. Its not offensive in anyway to need help. I guess people would be happy if it was the other way around. If natives were the bad guys and one of them left to help the white people. How do you think that would do in the box office? Probably not so great because it is easier to make the white man the bad guy than a racial group of color. it’s a theme taken from history. White people have been takers, killers, and unfair throughout history. So just think of all the movies where the white man has been the bad guy over a different race and you will think of racism in a whole different light. This was a good movie and this White Messiah complex keeps making money so James Cameron is going to keep making movies.

Race Relations Project : Racism Looks Pretty Mild on This Side of the Atlantic

It’s strange to think that this kind of racism still exists so openly in Europe. In the U.S. it is so frowned upon and taboo that I don’t think a lot of us Americans could imagine so much racism in any other place, especially in Europe. I feel that Europe goes out of their way to tell America that we are uncivilized and stupid when they are trying to pull this kind of behavior in such a public setting. Soccer or “football” is the most popular sport in Europe and they are treating their fancy-footed heroes like they are criminals. Like the did something so horrible as to be ridiculed and mocked by their “fans.” To do the Nazi symbol in a stadium makes me sick to my stomach. Europeans especially know of the trauma that people went through because of the Nazis, and they think its funny or powerful to do that at a public event that is also televised? It scares me to know that there is so much radical behavior over the color of a players skin. In America you would get locked up for throwing bananas onto the field and calling players monkeys. Players and coaches that made racist remarks would be fired. Their careers virtually over. Sports broadcasters have lost their jobs for saying things not even half as harsh as what these Europeans have said. I think action needs to be taken and although the president of FIFA has claimed that he will shut down a world cup game if such behavior continues, I don’t believe it. Escort fans out and arrest them or fine them for such behavior. The players are just trying to play and the ones being ridiculed are some of the best players in the world. They don’t deserve this kind of treatment when they are just trying to fulfill their life long dreams. The unfairness of it is painful. The fear Europeans have of “colored” immigrants is no excuse to act like a bunch of barbarians. Which is ironic because they are the ones calling the black players monkeys. Americans have this notion that we are the only people racist against everyone, but in reality we are the most tolerant because we have to be. We have been programmed for such a long time to never offend anyone so when I saw such behavior by people over seas I was more than surprised. I was flabbergasted. People need to stop pointing the finger and name calling like they are in second grade and get some common sense. Ignorance is bred and fed by stereotypes and idiocy and it seems to have hit a climax at professional soccer tournaments, surprisingly.

Race Relations Project : Clubbing the "Bejesus" Out of Rationality

The insensitivity that Pat Robertson spoke is definite, but I’m also not offended by it. This man is clearly delusional and a religious fanatic. Anyone with half a brain would realize this and the other people who don’t can live in their own “religious” world. Freedom of speech is what makes America “free” but with it we have to listen to some really big idiots babble about pacts with the devil while these poor people are suffering more immensely than any of us can imagine. I think he should be punished and needs to retire from on-air preaching, but also I don’t think he meant it as an evil statement. Maybe its just his twisted way of justifying what happened; to give all the death and destruction some kind of meaning. Some of you people who posted that he is evil and should be damned to hell are being slightly harsh. He is one of many who sees the world in black and white and good and evil, he was just stupid enough to say something about it. He is also not the only insensitive person on TV as John Stuart comically portrays, he is the most ridiculous of course. What is scary is that even when all this destruction is happening to a peaceful people, some people still can only think of political propaganda and talking about Obama. Some people are just so one minded and can only think about one thing most of the time. It makes me sad for us and them that most Americans listen to this bull and agree with it. I’m not a political person and could never get into all the back stabbing and smack talking they do to win. We shouldn’t respect them for that and devout Christians should not respect Pat Robertson. He doesn’t deserve our respect but he doesn’t deserve to die or burn in hell. I’m sure mostly everyone that has heard his outrageous claim are smart enough to know that he’s obviously losing it. As I said before the ones who agree with him and are following blindly just because he is a religious figure shouldn’t be receiving our hatred or harsh words they should be receiving our pity and so should Pat Robertson. Imagine being someone so close minded that you will believe something so ludicrous. He is an old man who has followed Christianity very strictly for many years and as he gets older the black and white sides of his mind are becoming more defined. He didn’t make the Haitians seem evil he made them seem desperate, which I’m not saying is a whole lot better . I’m not making excuses for him; he should be reprimanded. I guess I just don’t want to see a crazy old man get battered by the media for something I don’t think was meant to be evil. But hey that’s just me.
