I'm sure there are people right now planning the next step if gay marriage rights are overturned. Unlike legislators, Justices are to put their ideological prejudices aside and vote on the legality of the case in front of them, which is why they aren't voted in... they have less loyalty to any particular voter demographic. BUT... (and it's a big one!) If they have to make legal decisions while worrying about keeping their jobs, then we're going to run into problems. Iowans essentially voted in favor of a 3rd branch of Legislature.
