With a costume people can't use his real identity to attack him such as waiting outside his place of work or home to jump him. He was being recognized during the day as the person who helps. It keeps him and his family safe when he doesn't have his costume on. I mean if the Joker knew Batman was Bruce Wayne then he would go after his loved ones first then probably get some of his fellow badguys together and attack him at his home.
