I am a volunteer on a Search and Rescue team under a Sheriff’s jurisdiction. We are often put in high profile situations and have media hounding us for a statement and if we breathe a word about anything to a reporter…well, that old joke about “You can’t fire me, I’m a volunteer” doesn’t apply! WHY? Because the chief law enforcement officer in our county has a responsibly to the prosecuting attorneys to maintain even a potential crime scene and protect the chain of evidence, even from statements that would give defense fodder! For a sitting Sheriff to make such irresponsible comments about a crime committed in his own jurisdiction is doing a HUGE disservice to the citizens he’s sworn to protect!
