Reading Local : Tonight 2-11: Sarah Gottesdiener and Dexter Flowers at In Other Words Books

Bill, I struggle every morning trying to decide which event to highlight. I would love to do them all, but then this blog would only be about lit events. Hopefully we spread the love around, but comments like this are always welcomed because it helps to add some context to some of the events going on.

Reading Local : Event Recap: John Kroger at Friends of Mystery\'s Bloody Thursday

Helen, I agree completely. This article coupled with Teresa's outstanding preview of the same event made me think I needed to take another look at this book. Especially when you add in the fact that it won this years Oregon Book Award for Creative Non-Fiction.

Reading Local : How Will the iPad Effect Local Literary Communities?

Karen, Ok I have to say, after watching the video on this page, I am a little bit more impressed with what this device does. Still pretty spendy though...

Reading Local : How Will the iPad Effect Local Literary Communities?

Karen, I am with you on this. I am not really sold on the idea that we need yet another device to add to the growing collection of items we have to bring with us everywhere we go. Although it looks like they are trying to bring everything together in one device, but it's really to big to be something you just lug around with you everywhere you go. Maybe everyone gravitates towards this (or the certain clones that will arise) instead of the netbooks that seem to be so popular now? Only time will tell, but I don't feel the desire to rush out and get one. It certainly would get my dollars over the Kindle or Nook, if I ever decided I had to have an eReader. I think bookstores need to be more proactive about technology in general, irregardless of todays news. Their biggest advantage right now is their sense of community, and they need to be active about finding a way to allow that community to coalesce online. So I think hiring/contracting programmers would be a great start. Lord know there are plenty of them looking for work!

Reading Local : Event Recap: Words Worth Paying For: Publishing in the Age of Electronic Readers

Spencer, I think that is a great observation. It's amazing the activity and thought that is going into trying to figure out what life is going to be like with e-readers, and whether this signals the death of the printed book, or will just force an evolution of print. Maybe it does happen in other industries, this just happens to be the one that we pay attention to and care about. It's interesting nonetheless, and I am excited to watch how it all plays out. Gabe
