Engines can certainly stall, being synonymous with stopping. However, many aircraft crashes are the result of aerodynamic stall, which is air not moving over the wing fast enough to sustain lift. So, while stall is a word, it is possibly not the best choice when referring to an aircraft engine.

Using Google Earth, you can draw a line from Gorst to Purdy ( I believe the area we are concerned with in the story). As the crow flies, that's a distance of 10.6 miles at a heading of 160 degrees with SR 16 running pretty much parallel. Once you are into Tacoma, SR 16 does take a pretty easterly tack to I-5.
