A lot of people feel as if illegal immigrants are lazy and that if they stayed in their own country and put a little effort into creating jobs they would probably have just as much opportunity there as they do here in our country. I find it very interesting that so many Americans feel this way about illegal immigrants. In all actuality we are the lazy ones because they are the ones fighting for their freedom while we just get ours handed to us with little to no effort on our part. Another problem U.S. citizens have with immigrants is the spread of their culture and language. Which is another example of Americans being lazy; it seems like we would rather have everyone convert to however we live than learn a little bit about another culture. Maybe another problem people have with illegal immigrants is that they have no sense of family because they left their family at home and may never see them ever again just to come over here and raise money.
This is a really great question but I do not think it is any different from asking the generic question of why are people racist. I do not understand why any person would hate another person just because of where they are from or how they look. People hate certain people, especially Mexicans it seems like, just because they assume that they are immigrants that are in “our” country illegally. First of all, it is not “our” country, this is a free country, and secondly not all Mexicans, or whatever, are illegal immigrants. I think that people especially dislike people that they know are illegal immigrants because they fear that the immigrants will steal all of our jobs. My friends feel that illegal immigrants need to go back to their own country and create their own jobs instead of stealing our jobs in our country.
Part 4: The needy penis lecture was by far the most entertaining lecture. I think it would be hard to pick a favorite lecture because up until this Christian Invasion I have thoroughly enjoyed and found all the lectures thought provoking! But the lecture on slavery where we did the m&m experiment type thing was way better than this lecture. I like the lectures where I leave and cannot stop thinking about this Soc119 class. I love reading the twitter feed after class to hear all about everyone’s reactions to the lectures.
Part 3: I think that Sam has had way better lectures than this Christian Invasion lecture. I may be thinking this way though because I am Christian and I thought that this Christian Invasion lecture was kind of a hate fest on Christians, even though Sam tried really hard for it not to be. I don’t think Penn State needs to see more crazy Christians, we all know they are out there and I don’t even like them. It took me eighteen years to believe in God because of how crazy Christians are and I don’t like to be put in the same group as those extremists. So naturally, because Christianity is kind of a touchy subject for me to hear about, I like a lot of other lectures better.
Part 2: I thought we came to the conclusion that groups of people judge each other and are wrong most of the time a long time ago. Seeing what people from Iraq see was no surprise to me. I mean, the media really has a huge effect on how we see things and we only ever hear half of the story. The media is the same in every country, or that’s how I see it anyway. Sometimes it is ironic to think about though because the people in America that other countries don’t like are the same people Americans don’t like in America. This is probably the same way for Iraq and many other countries.
Part 1: I personally did not think this was Sam’s best lecture of the semester, or even close to the best lecture. I didn’t really gain much from this lecture because religion is something that I think about often and am very familiar with. So for me, Sam was going over things I already knew, like how crazy extremists of any religion are. I’m sure it helped a lot of people gain knowledge and understanding of Iraqis but i just thought the lecture was entirely too long and unnecessary. We were taught a long time ago not to think like the majority, so I was a little bit confused as to why we needed to judge Americans through the Iraqis eyes or vice versa.
part 3: I really enjoyed this class because it put such a serious and sometimes awkward conversation, into a hilarious learning experience. I think that men should really take the time to learn about women’s bodies and how to make sex enjoyable for them because the best sex is the sex where it is mutually good for both parties involved. I also think that women should take the time to learn about their bodies to maybe tell the men how to do it and what we like instead of just going with the flow and not taking action ourselves. Sex isn’t a man’s job; it takes two to tango.
Part 2: I think that everyone should have been enlightened about women, because in my opinion everything that we learned yesterday about men is common knowledge. Penises are extremely different than vaginas and we all know that this is a man’s world. The facts about men that we introduced to us in class were facts that everyone should know. But I am so glad that Laurie brought up things about women’s bodies because men truly do not know and sometimes the women do not know either. Women should explain to their men that they have cycles where sometimes they are not going to want to have sex, unlike men. A lot of times I do not even know about my own body so it was very enlightening to hear that we do not need to feel bad, or like we have done something wrong when we do not want to have sex. It’s okay that men get aroused easier and quicker than women, but it would be more okay if everyone knew about it. Since people do not know about the human body, they just assume that the women are in the wrong because we are different from our male lovers.
I definitely think learning about my own sex was more enlightening than learning about the opposite sex. I was so shocked to hear that only 35% of women experience orgasms while having sexual intercourse. I was also enlightened when Laurie was talking about how many women fake orgasms, when actually the sex they just had may have been terrible for them. This might come as a surprise to me because I have been dating the same guy for a while and we are very open with each other; when it’s bad, I straight up tell him it is bad. I do not understand why women fake it so much and lie about how bad sex is. Women deserve an experience just as good as men do. Yes, women should want it to be good for the men but it should be the same for the men wanting women to enjoy themselves. .
Part 4: Christians (I am making generalizations about Christians as a whole but I am definitely including myself in this too) have the tendency nowadays to forget that God should be their number one priority and that the only reason we are on Earth is to spread his word. We get too caught up in trying to hang out with other Christians and working on our careers. When in all honestly, as the Bible says, (again this is just what I believe) Jesus did not hang out with and only talk to other Christians. He talked the most to the poor and the prostitutes. Just like this video says, people that hang out with people that don’t go to church are more likely to not go to church. Well the vice versus is true also because people that hang out with people that go to church are more likely to go to church too! That’s the thing that most Christians don’t see in their busy lives. We need to be spreading the word, and being God’s servants in our community, not just in our everyday life. My conclusion is that the reason religion is dying is the religious’ own fault.
