World In Conversation : What does it say about our society if schools are more segregated now than in the 1970s?- 119 Blog

Our economy isn't helping either. Segregated schools are more likely to be in poorer communities causing many of the students to not have enough resources to do their work, not enough technology to expand their minds, or the right amount of money for proper books or utensils they need for school. Like the video Sam showed us in class when the "proper white kids" switched with the group of black kids and going to each other schools for the day, the black kids from the more poorer school said they were more focused and intrigued in school when going to the white kids' school. This shows that so many students are being neglected and they don't have the motivation to do what they have to do to lead a better life when going to a more segregated school.

This makes me sad because everyone talks about having a better and more peaceful world where everyone can get along and there would be no war, etc. But if schools are more segregated than they were in the 1970's, its like its going backwards, and makes me feel like things will never get better. I believe our generation we have today and future generations to come will be way less racial or prejudice against other races, but things will still be implemented towards them. It's been about 40 years since the '70s and the fact that we've taken a step BACKWARDS in that time by making our schools more segregated is so frustrating. It only shows that we aren't taking any steps forward to make racism not exist in our country or the world all together. A lot of people SAY they want things better or to understand different races and culture, but nothing is happening to make this work, no action is taken place to actually make things better.

For schools to be more segregated now than they were in the 1970's i believe this is a bad thing. The information speaker yesterday made a good point though. Many of the black students or hispanic students come from an area that are majority black or hispanic, and vice versa with white people. Than, when we get to college we expect everyone to get along, when we aren't doing anything in the beginning to make this work out in the end. Having more segregated schools I think is better because that means more couple are interacial couples, which I think we need in order for everyone "to get along." Although segregated schools are more associated with poorer communities, and the majority of these neighborhoods aren't white, it shows that theyre much segregated compared to the 1970's, there still a huge gap, and this isn't allowing us to make things better between different races. We'll still have our stereotypes between everyone etc.

I know that we'll probably have many more attacks on this country, or more wars to come. It's nerve racking knowing that someone out there is brewing up another terrorist attack on our country, and why is the question. What have we done to you or your country to deserve that? Also, where will they hit next? Will I be at the wrong place at the wrong time? It's very scary knowing that these terrorists can attack anywhere, and kill so many innocent people that had no idea it was coming. This might sound cliche but someday I just hope for world peace and all of the negative leaders can be taken care of to help with the world peace.

I feel safe in this country I guess because of the laws and freedom we do have. Even though we may not all agree or like our government, they make a big part in what our country is today. To see that video with other world leaders making threats, not even to us, but to other countries in the world is scary because it makes you think what are they planning to do next? We've had multiple attacks on our country plus numerous threats we recieve all the time. In my mind, I'm thinking even though I feel safe here and our government will protect us, what are they actually doing to prevent attacks on us in the future? It's scary to know that someone has the power to blowup a country, take control of their people to use them as self detinating bombs, not care if their country is being attacked on and they hide out to help themselves not get caught. When realizing how much of an impact Sadam Hussain or Osama Bin Laden has on the world is a scary thing. They're such big "leaders" in the world with strong enough powers to take out millions, which is a scary thing.

The video in the class that impacted me the most was the first video that Sam showed about the Jihad and the impact they have and have made on the world. I wans't aware of all the threats and terrorist attacks they've made in the past 20 some odd years, and it petrified me to see all the quotes that the leaders made to take over the world and have world domination. Living in America makes me feel safe, considering this is all I know. The rights and freedom that we have I think we all deserve. When it comes to war, the only war I've witnessed is on the news in other countries. I believe that with the government we have, even though they make wrong decisions for the most part, use our money in horrible ways, and make us believe things that aren't true, I still think that our government would do their best to protect this country from being invaded and letting their people get harmed.

Another issue is that when Laurie and Sam brought up why girls dress up so much and are uncomfortable, I thought to myself, I never really do that. I have no problem wearing a cute top, with jeans and my uggs to go out in. When it comes to class, get real. You can catch me in sweats and a hoodie, with no makeup on Monday through Friday. I jsut don't have the energy to always look "up to part." Don't get me wrong, if I'm going out with my boyfriend, friends to a party, etc, I will look nice, do my hair, and put make up on, but other than that, why should it matter? Even better, why should it matter if you wear all that to a party? Let alone everyday. I know a lot of girls who can't even leave the house without make up on, WHY? Don't be ashamed, because sometimes, looking natural is way better than all that make up.

The lecture didn't make me feel uncomfortable at all. Like I said, it was a breathe of fresh air. I was basically already aware of what was happening with my body and how I was feeling about sex, or my partner, or anything in relation to the matter. It was surprising to hear everything about the male body, and the way they act because I've never thought about them in that way. For example, they dressed relaxed while we, as women, dress up to go out. Also, it is really all about the penis, what it wants, and what men want. Laurie was right also, why do we need alcohol to make us "in the mood?" Sometimes, I just want to cuddle. Whenever my boyfriend and I lay in bed to watch a movie or just relax, he always assumes it's going to end up in sex, and sometimes, I just don't feel like it.

I was really excited about the lecture yesterday and couldn't wait to hear what Sam and Laurie had to say. After hearing the lecture, I was really happy with the points they touched on. Everything they said was true also. For example, having sex doesn't always satisfy me, and more foreplay is needed. It's not always what the guy wants, right now, or right away... Sometimes men have to take a look at a woman's body to realize that many things are occuring at once, like Laurie said. It was really a breathe of fresh air, and excited that men finally got to hear the truth.

World In Conversation : How have you acted when involved in racist or discriminating events?- 119 Blog

I know a lot of people who think it would be like butting your nose into other people's business, but if it comes down to a situation like that where someone isn't being served because of the way they dress, or because their skin color is different than the person serving them, I would absolutely stand up for them. It's just not right. So many people don't say anything because they "don't want to get involved." If you don't want to get involved, then stop saying that we need to make changes in the world, because you're not helping. If you want changes, be the change you want to see in the world. :) Take a stance to stand up for people who can't stand up for themselves. We all have a voice, myself a very loud one, so we should use them!

I grew up nervous because of this situation that I couldn't bring certain people to my house, or date certain races, etc. But after growing up, and I guess having a voice and opinion about most things, I decided to voice my opinion to my father and let him know that I don't agree with his decisions. If a situation like that occured again, or if I saw someone getting harrassed because of their race, or whatever, I would stand up for them. I don't think it's right to be harrassed just because you're a different race than others. For example, the video Sam showed us in class a couple weeks ago about the woman who wouldn't be served in the bakery, and only about half the people stood up for her, I would be one of them. We always talk about making change, and movements in society, etc. If we want to see those changes, we have to take a step to make those changes.

When I was little, I saw a lot of racist arguments happen, especially in my house. When I was younger, around 6 or 7, my oldest sister started dating a black guy, which my father wasn't very fond of. I heard arguements all the time about how my father thinks my sister shouldn't date him, name calling, etc. Because I was so little, I didn't know that it was wrong, or my father was being racist, or the situation in general. So, when I was little, I didn't say much, or anything at all for that matter. As I grew up and had my own experiences with different races, I understood where my dad was coming from when he didn't like the idea of my sister dating a different race, but on the other hand, I also understood my sister's point of view, because everyone isn't the same.

World In Conversation : What do you think of the diversity at Penn State?- 119 Blog

I would have never thought people of color thought that way because they come off confident to me. It's surprising to hear that some people of color percieve lighter skin as more beautiful, etc. It's kind of like they never get a break. You are born the way you are for a reason. Then noticing your skins darker than someone else's, and knowing some think lighter skin is more beautiful, you can't help it because thats the way you were born, and for a reason, and every skin color is beautiful. I look at different races differently now, especially females, because in a way, we all think the same way. Like Sam said, it doesn't matter how many times you tell us we're beautiful, we still won't believe it and we all have our own insecurities.

I know that Penn State takes precautions to take as many minority races as possible, but it looks as though they aren't because the majority is white. I don't know whether or not many other races than white apply to penn state because that could be the case, but if that's not the case, then when Penn State asks what race you are on the application, it doesn't really matter, because the majoirty is white. I could see if all the races were equal in numbers, but they're not, so why ask the race of the person applying in general? When it comes to noticing other races, I notice a difference in attitude, carriage, and personality. When watching the video yesterday about children thinking the black baby doll is "bad" and the white is "good" and how young black girls are insecure about some of their looks because they also have expectations about ways they should look really opened my eyes. Being white, I know sometimes, yes, I think I'm fat, or my hairs not right, or I should dress up more etc.

I believe there are a lot of different races at penn state, but as we all know, the majority of the race is white, knowing this statistically from class yesterday from one of the slides Sam showed us. I see different races everyday, but the majority is white, and I feel as though thats what Penn State's known for. When you look a fraternities or sororities the majority of them are white, maybe one frat is all black, etc. I feel the way Penn State is precieved is as an all white school, or a prestigious white school. I don't like that its precieved like that, but I feel as it is.

We all just have to make the effort to recycle, everything. Instead of using the dishwasher, wash some dishes by hand. But don't keep the water running the whole time, the same goes for when brushing your teeth, don't keep the water running. Take shorter showers, in and out. I understand if you don't have the money to do this, but maybe by a hybrid car to reduce the toxic chemicals in the air. Anything, and everything helps, we just all have to do this together.

All of these things add up, and especially with as many people in the world, it won't take long for these resources to run out. I believe we take advantage of all of these resources because we know that we, of this generation, have nothing to worry about. At the same time, we know that if we can produce things synthetically now, and in the future so many things could happen by then where we could possibly mass produce a bunch of things. But, then again, it wouldn't be natural. In my opinion, to preserve the natural resources we have today, we all have to make an effort to decrease our needs. The entire world has to take part in decreasing their needs. I don't think that farming will ever become an issue, because we'll always have seeds to grow into nutritous food. Water, energy, and the environment as a whole needs to be fixed. The ozone layer already has a huge hole in it, which would take a long time to fix. Also, we do our part by recycling anything we can. But on the other hand, I also heard that it takes more energy to recycle something that the hazardous waste in produces in a land fill.

When it comes to resources, I always here that "we" have nothing to worry about... the people who will have to worry about this situation in the long run will be our grandchildren's grandchildren, because i believe things will run out eventually, all of the natural things anyway. We have the power now to develop synthentic things all the time, but its not natural and may be harmful to the environment. It's ashame because we take advantage of all of our resources, for example, energy. How many of us leave the lights on? Or keep the television on while we sleep? When we leave the room, the lights don't need to be on, or when we're not in the house, possibly turn the air conditioner off?

In my personal opinion, if you can't afford a child, you're able to afford ten dollars to buy contraceptives. It's cheaper in the long run. Don't have insurance? They have personal medical plans so you can get a prescription contraceptive every month for cheap at a local pharmacy. Many people, especially young teenagers, don't take into account the consequences that can come from your actions. If you can't afford a child, spend the money and buy contraceptives.

I think that if you're a responsible adult, you're more than welcome to have as many children as you want, but just make sure you're financially stable, whether it be you're a single parent, or not, make sure that you have the means to provide for your child. I understand that people in the situation of being in poverty can't "spoil" their kids and buy them whatever they want, take them for ice cream every day, or send them to a "fancy" school. But providing for them means that if you're responsible enough to bring a child into this world, make sure there's always food on the table for them, and clothing on their back, and a roof over their head. It all comes down to choice. Money is a very big issue when you grow older, want to start a family, buy a house, maybe a new car to drive your family around in. But if you want to make the choice to have sex often, while unprotected, and know that you're going to conceive a child out of it, make sure that within nine months, you have your stuff together.
