Right, because a small crowd correlates with only being interested in wealthy white men. I guess that leads to a lot of classist racism inside school courses. "What? You only allow in 30-40 students? You rich snobs! I don't care if most of the class is Latino. Check your privilege!"

Daily Camera.com: : Bob Greenlee: It\'s time to re-think Boulder\'s muni scheme - Boulder Daily Camera

This confirms what I finally came to suspect (after going down a blind alley or two): The City had no frickin clue what it was doing. The City made claims that it wanted to keep its plans secret so as to increase its leverage in negotiations with Xcel. The reality was it thought if it was transparent, enough people would figure this out, and not want to go "forward." (Running in place is more like it.) You've correctly identified that Boulder is a faith-based community. So I think we can all predict without effort that the City will not stop pursuing this dead end. I can't remember when, but I remember Shaun McGrath saying something interesting about this, probably before he joined the Obama Admin., that, "We don't know what form the municipal utility will ultimately take." I remember he suggested something that sounded quite modest as a possibility, nothing like creating a city utility. I don't remember what it was exactly. It seemed something on the order of providing a city subsidy or loans for homeowners to install their own renewables, but don't quote me on that. That, and expanding "Smart Regs" may be what we ultimately get out of this. And don't complain about the money involved, and what it could've been used to do instead. This is Boulder. We have money to burn like you wouldn't believe! This is just our version of "Bonfire of the Vanities"!

"NO-vember = NO Occupation Tax = NO Muni" I voted against it when it first came up, and I'll vote against it again. The funny thing is when it first came up, the City made this claim that, "You know, with past referenda to renew taxes, we talked about how if they weren't approved, library hours might be reduced. Well now we really mean it. If the Occ. Tax isn't approved, library hours will have to be reduced." We approved the tax. I've been a rather frequent patron of the Boulder Public Library, and I learned a few months ago that library hours were reduced... The City lost that leverage. I'm sure they'll make some other empty claim to scare people, explaining forces that have nothing to do with tax revenue.

I agree, but the term used is a misnomer. hydrocarbons do not contain "fossilized water." They contain hydrogen atoms, along with carbon atoms (hence the name). We'd have the same issue if we went with hydrogen fuel cells. We get most of our hydrogen from oil. Combine that with oxygen, and you'd get water vapor that did not previously exist in our biosphere.

Daily Camera.com: : Bob Greenlee: World Affairs Interruptus? - Boulder Daily Camera

Having attended a few CWA events in the 2000's, I could see the criticism of it being a "progressive love-fest" as accurate. I looked over the events schedules, and looking at the titles, subject summaries, and who was on the panels, it seemed that 90% of it was just that. Typically I'd find 2 or 3 panel discussions each year that looked like they were worth the time and effort to attend, not because they featured anything politically moderate or conservative, but because they were the few that seemed to take an issue seriously, and had people who valued knowledge on those subjects on the panels to discuss them. I'd get something out of those few half the time. Each year I'd look and see, "Is there more of this quality," and sadly I'd see there wasn't. Each year, after I'd attended a few of the good panels, I'd skip the rest. I couldn't explain this disparity in quality, except to think that there was a heavy political influence in the event planning, and an unserious disposition towards knowledgeable discussion. It seemed that a lot of the events were oriented around merging an issue with "entertainment value," to keep things light and shallow. I'd be in favor of keeping the CWA around if I could see movement towards making it an event that cared about substance, rather than ego stroking.

I agree with you, though I think what the other side would say in response is Boulder businesses need to get employees bus passes, and encourage growth in RTD bus routes, or carpool. I have not seen them have sympathy for car drivers, nor businesses, no matter the circumstances, even though if you look at the traffic Boulder has, there is no doubt that many people here use them. The only question is perhaps a lot of those car drivers come in from out of town, in which case Boulder residents would rather get rid of the traffic jam they see every day along 36 by telling the car drivers to "take a hike."

FYI, I didn't just arrive yesterday. I've lived in Boulder since 1980. I very much liked being here from then until about the late '90s, and then Boulder's character worsened from then on (IMO). I had no complaints about it until then. Back in the '90s, while Boulder was to the left of center for as long as I could remember, there was a conservative presence here. Conservative, business-oriented members of our community served on the City Council. They were never the majority, but they had a voice. There always seemed to be about 3 of them on Council. Bob Greenlee, a Republican, was actually mayor here for a bit back then, which I considered a damn miracle. I never thought I'd see the day. That's gone, though. As far as I'm concerned, George Karakehian is the last of the conservatives on Council. It's been my suspicion that the town I loved was supplanted by residents who moved here from CA (which has experienced a population drain for the past 20 years) and other parts of the country, which have moved it politically farther left than what I remember. I've met people who say they've been here for 50 or 60 years, and they love what's happened to the place. So people who are long-time residents can disagree about what the ideal Boulder would be.

If scientists do not know how to test a hypothesis, there is no point in demanding, "Show me a better way." That's like asking a physicist to demonstrate warp drive.
Another possibility is it may not matter if emissions are changed or not. Human influence may have no discernible effect, since natural forcing may drown it out as noise.

"We know it's more than we're paying, since we're paying precisely dick." No, that was 123's point. We don't know squat about what could be considered negative impact of climate change. You know what you think is consequent damage, but that does not take into consideration what other people besides yourself think about it. As for "paying dick," we're paying precisely dick for Earth's warping of space-time, and the fact that 8 planets orbit the Sun. You're trying to make a point without an argument. "Your argument, however, means unless we are prescient, we do nothing. That's not a credible reaction." Sure it is. If my basement isn't flooding, I don't need to spend money to hire a remediation service to pump out the basement, and I don't need to hire a decontamination crew to clean it out, either. In your argument, I should do that regardless, because even though I don't know whether my basement is flooding or not, it will somehow reduce my costs. That's nonsensical.

I think what you mean is that it sets a price floor...just like the minimum wage, come to think of it. To progressives, it's a good idea, just like putting a massive tax on cigarettes. Though, since they've set it so high, it's encouraged a black market in cigarettes, called "loosies." That's what caused the confrontation that got Eric Garner killed. Rather than focus on that, it's "institutional racism," "I can't breathe" (or is it "hands up, don't shoot"?...) Price fixing is when parties that compete agree to keep their prices within a range, and they tell each other what their prices are going to be so the others can adjust theirs accordingly.
