As is typical of the press, the story aired on the crane incident uses words that are misleading, as are the headlines of the article: “Crane Collapses.” This is so unfortunate since the business of the press is to convey accurate information. Why is this reported as “crane collapsed”? Collapse means to cave or fall in or give way, like a bridge collapsed, usually due to overload conditions or metal fatigue. The bridge in Minneapolis, MN collapsed due to catastrophic failure during the evening rush hour on August 1, 2007. The crane tipped over due to inappropriate operation given the existing ground conditions. Gravity tipped it over; metal fatigue or catastrophic failure did not cause it to collapse. Collapse means physical failure. This is not what happened to the crane in Cedar Rapids. This accident was the result of human failure.
