According to all of the local newspapers, he was kicked off the team and not suspended for the year. http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_c... So I think that is an error.

So you missed the Sun Bowl Angrybeaver? Hekker has gotten steadily better every year. The monsoon he kicked in at BYU withstanding. I think Hekker is a great punter and watching him in games and practice he has the potential to be amazing. But I am also not 'angry'. Grrrrr!

Hey Cliff, great report and thanks for the videos. Pretty awesome to see some fo the events and how great the girls are doing. it is also interesting to see that Gymnastics is basically even to or out drawing Jay John era basketball. Not to beat a dead horse on that one, but it just goes to show that if you excell at any sport it can generate some revenue for the school! People love a winner! Anyway great job Beavers and thanks for the update!

Brooks Hatch : Thursday update: OSU softball starts Friday

I totally agree on expansion. I also think it will limit recruiting and if they do it like the Big 12, they could lose some long standing rivalries. Nebraska and Oklahoma were basically the Civil War of the Big 8 and once they expanded, now there are years that Nebraska and Oklahoma don't play, How sucky would it be to have a year with no Civil War? I think it also hurts OSU as far as competitively and in recruiting. If there are years where OSU does not play in LA, that would be bad. Or, even worse, if they played in LA every other year but always at USC, that could hurt OSU's record. Sure, I want them to win every game and I think they can, but before the round robin, there were almost whole decades where OSU never had USC at home. Or UW for that matter. That can be rough! Anyway, I am totally against it, and I think having a Championship game will hurt the Pacific Ten immensely. There is already a hard enough time getting two teams into BCS games. If you give one top team another loss, it will get even harder.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Football schedule

With the collective bargaining agreement being revised this year between the NFL players union and the owners, Paea is not being foolish. I don't want him to leave, but after this year they will probably enact a rookie cap on contracts so future players will make far less out of the gate than in the past. Jake Locker is actually the one who made a poor decision financially. If Paea goes, I will be sad, but it won't be a bad decision since a second round pick this year could make more in their initial contract than a first round pick next year.

I am not sure Sean Canfield his first year as a starter and Lyle Moevao after just four starts count as veteran QB's. Katz has as much experience as Canfield did in 2007. Plus, those slow starts are like the Dallas Cowboy's inability to win in December they are only relevant to the media and are only true until they are not. The Cowboys have won this December and I suspect OSU has a shot a winning in September to. No other team has had this many people returning so comparing this team to any other team in the past is apples and oranges. Especially if you count all the experience that Catchings brings.

But oh well, on the bright side, I know a lot more about a great women's soccer team and their historic trip through the playoffs! Beat the Leprechauns! And Drive safe Brooks!

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Quizz for Heisman, notes

Cliff, I understand your comments, but your comparison to Gerhart is a little lazy. OSU has not yet played Washington State, Washington and UCLA. Washington State and Washington have the worst run defenses in the conference. His signature game came against UCLA who though statistically stout, has sucked in the Pacific Ten against the run. They have had a 134 yard rusher (gerhart), 152 rusher in the duck game, and two hundred yard rushers against Cal. (154 for Vereen and 102 for Best). They have given up over 200 yards rushing every conference game except the Stanford one. That was a measly 198 yards. So really, Gerhart has gone against the patsies of the league and Cal... who might also be a patsy. Good for him. On the flip side, Quizz has gotten his yards against USC, Arizona, ASU and Stanford, four of the five best defenses in the Pacific Ten. If he stays healthy, he could have some big games against the Washington Schools at least, and probably will have a good game against the Bruins this weekend. That is the potential for a lot of yards to make up any ground that he might have lost early in the season. Anyway, I figured I would throw in my two cents on this. If Quizz goes for 200 in any of those games, or gets 200 all purpose in two of them (*cough* Washington Schools *cough*) then he will have the stats to promote a Heisman campaign. Especially if everyone else continues to play like they don't want it.

Brooks Hatch : It's alive! Yes, we are back

I totally agree with the assesment of Canfield and the team. The fan in me knows that they can win all of them if they play out of their minds. The realist in me knows that 9-3 with this offensive line and defensive backfield would be a major coup. I think Cal might be the class of the league and a tough win for anyone. I wish we had them at Reser this year. My guess is that Cincinnati, USC and Oregon are where OSU is going to have to look for some tough wins. We will all find out soon enough though! Great to have you back. I am sure you have many adoring fans!

Brooks Hatch : Friday, updated 11 p.m.

Two quick things: 1. I think Simmons is a good fit for OSU. I know a few players and assistant coaches that were around in 2001and 2002 and they really liked him as a coach and thought he was a good recruiter. He also appears to want to be there, which I think goes a long way to getting good players there. As lame and annoying as I think the UW football coaches are, they really want to be there and they really think they can make changes and kids are eating it up. So far. 2. People don't really mention it, but I think that OSU players in the CFL is a great recruiting tool. If you look at the last five years, OSU is getting football players into positions where they can make a decent living playing football after college. "An average salary is around $50,000. Starters can earn up to $120,000. The starting quarterback usually makes between $200,000 and $300,000." (that was from WikiAnswers.com, so I have no idea how accurate it is.) That is a decent living to play a game you love. Heck, if you can start, that falls into the "Way more money than most people make" category. Arena football, I believe, has a similar salary mark. Anyway, it is always more impressive to point out the Stephen Jackson's, Nick Barnett's and Derek Anderson's of the world, but there is five guys right there that are still playing ball, making decent money. With Riley's ties to the CFL, I think they can offer a lot more than many programs as far as getting guys a shot to continue playing football after they graduate. Just look at the growing number of Beavers in the NFL and CFL. Thanks Brooks, great as always!

Brooks Hatch : Up and at 'em on a Wednesday morning

I am a little shocked at Wong's decision. There may be way more to it than I know about, but he really struggled at the plate at the end of the season and I think if he had another year to work on his batting and could go out next year and improve, he might get drafted higher. Of course there is usually more to these decisions than just what I see on the surface, but I was pretty surprised to see his decision.
