Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Mom Justice.

When my brother, sister and I attended our mother's memorial service a few years ago, we met a man who had known our mom for many years. The service was held in an Elks Lodge and the alchohol flowed freely thoughout the service. My wife and I might have been the only Christians there. After this man met us, he expressed surprise when he said, "I've known your mom for twenty years and she never told me she had any kids." Some people are blessed with great moms. Others are challenged with not-so-great moms. Either way, in Christ we can overcome all things.

Michael - I thought a true Calvinist believed in "Irresistible Grace", which they practice by showing "irresistible grace" toward people like me and toward others with whom they may disagree doctrinally. But I may be wrong.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Resisting Rest.

I am learning to rest as I get older. When I take time off work to do something active, I routinely take one additional day off work for "down time". Last Friday I took the day off work to drive 300 miles to help my daughter move. Saturday we moved her household from one location to another. Sunday I drove home. But I did not return to work on Monday. I returned to work on Tuesday. On Monday, I watched TV, read, completed a couple of sudoku puzzles and mowed the lawn. When I returned to work on Tuesday I was refreshed and rested and ready to work.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Having a big fight right before church.

I had to confess. Otherwise, I would have had to lie to her and Christians don't lie, right? It was obvious that something very unusual was going on when I didn't try to rush her out the door and when we got to church before everyone else did. She was going to eventually find out anyway, so I just confessed right then and there and got it over with.

Early in our marriage, my wife would always be running late on Sunday mornings and I, the punctual one, would routinely prod her along, growing increasingly irritated as the time drew near. As we pulled into the church parking lot at the midnight hour (figurative, not literal), I'd be mad at her for being late and she'd be mad at me for rushing her. Then we would peform our well-rehearsed "Worship-God-Together" act which we had practiced for 52 consecutive Sundays during the previous year. Then, one Sunday morning I did not prod her. I let her take her own sweet time. We left the house when she was ready to leave and not one minute sooner. She was not mad at me and I was not mad at her as we approached the church parking lot. And, lo, we were the first ones to arrive at church that Sunday morning! But when I confessed to her that I had secretly moved the clocks forward the night before, well, then she got kinda mad.

Saying "You're rich" in response to someone saying "If I were rich" is like saying "Well, at least you don't have terminal cancer" in response to someone who shares a personal struggle. It is a put down designed to diminish rather than to edify.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Fearing we'll out sin grace.

Jon - I wonder if the guy who asked you that question thinks that he sins less frequently than the rest of us do. Sometimes when I am well behaved for two or three days in a row, I start feeling pretty good about my spiritual self, pretty good about my evolving righteousness, pretty judgmental toward all those poorly behaved so-called Christians around me. Then - OOPS - I do it again! So I tuck my Pharisee tail between my Pharisee legs and go back to the cross for some more of that grace stuff. I am only slightly exaggerating here. I don't think I've ever actually been well behaved for two whole consecutive days.

Whom the Lord loves, he chastens. When we try to take advantage of God's grace by pursuing sin, we get chastened. But His love is always available for a return visit. And for another return visit. And for another . .

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : 1 thing that changed the way I chase dreams.

Yesterday I commented on my "thing" in treating cancer patients with radiation therapy. I was already in my 40's when I pondered the possibility of returning to school to learn how. I had three young children at home and my wife had died. I was never a risk-taker and I was well past my youth, so the very thought of applying to a college terrified me. But I decided to set my fears aside and to send in an application for admission anyway. Like you, Jon, I decided it once and then did it. I returned to college, got trained to treat cancer patients, then sought employment. I am now working at my dream job and have been for over twelve years now.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : What’s your thing? A short Saturday question.

Believe it or not, I am actually living my dream job. When my wife died from breast cancer in her thirties, I wanted to become a radiation therapist and help other cancer patients fight their battles. But I was in my forties, a widowed single dad with children ages 15, 13 & 10. But when my two oldest kids finished high school, I took my youngest, moved away and enrolled in a college radiation therapy program. I've been treating cancer patients for over 12 years now and this continues to be the most rewarding work I have ever done. By the way, I met and treated another lady who was fighting breast cancer about 9 years ago. I fell head over heels in love with her and we've now been married for over 8 years.
