Remember Russia did not invade Afghanistan. They were there helping the Central Afghan government get power. Russia was negotiating a treaty to put an oil and gas pipeline through Afghanistan. In supporting the central government against the various wartords they had to bargain with for rights for the pipeline they were lending financial and educational assistance. One major move that the Russians talked the central government into doing was enter the 20th century. Make women equals, let them get educated, protect their rights. This infuriated the rural warlords and set in motion the rebellion against the central government and the Russians. LOOK we are doing the same thing... ---Think can we change thier customs or not---- If not how can we win?????????
