Thanks, I think it worked! Updated to 6.0.1 then pointed redsn0w to the 6.0 ipsw before the jailbreak.

I'm unclear if I can do an untethered jailbreak of my old bootrom 3GS on 6.0.1? It's currently on 5.0.1 and I don't have the SHSH for 6.0, only 6.0.1.

Okay there's a big thread on macrumors where people say that isn't the case. They didn't need to restore. Just passing it along.

My understanding is that once your IMEI is added to the whitelist (whether by AT&T or a gray market vendor) the phone is unlocked. You can immediately use a different carrier sim. The restore in iTunes is just for confirmation. But yes, you can use redsn0w to restore to 5.1.1 and you will get the "Congratulations your iPhone is unlocked" message after you connect the phone to iTunes.

To clarify, I haven't tried to JB on iOS6 yet. I was just wondering if I had the old bootrom and if it was possible. I thought the old bootrom would say iBoot-359.2. But mine says iBoot-1219.62.15.

In fact, I realized this morning that I didn't save the SHSH in time for iOS6. Or anything after 5.0.1! So this is a moot point unless redsn0w is updated for 6.0.1.

Thanks, I guess I don't have the old bootrom. But I could swear I did in the past for a previous untethered jailbreak. There is no way it could have been updated?

I'm having trouble understanding if my 3 iPhone 3GS's have the old bootrom. The serial numbers are:

86925xxxxxx
87935xxxxxx
87936xxxxxx

That is less than week 40, so that might imply old bootrom. But the model numbers all begin with MC and redsn0w says the FirmwareVersion is iBoot-1219.62.15. That seems to imply new bootrom.

I could swear I did an untethered jailbreak in the past that required the old bootrom, but now I'm confused.

That makes sense. Sorry for the dumb question and thanks!

I should clarify that I used redsn0w and my saved blobs from Cydia to put a clean copy of 5.1.1 on the phone. Then used redsn0w again to jailbreak. Those 2 options are what I see when plugging the phone into my iTunes (and I assume what the buyer will see).
