It is extraordinary that central office acted to protect Grieve. It would have been far smarter to have dealt with him by withdrawing the whip etc. Making an example of this most egregious of characters who is clealy loyal to the EU not Britain. The other point is - more importantly - such types are massive vote losers - so any idea that central office is better at picking candidates than local associations is ludicrous. Of course we want individuals who think for themselves but Grieve has wrecked the reputation of the Conservative Party with his antics and plotting. As to the question posed - all members need to be more assertive and reverse this anti-democratic tendency within the Party.
