As for the term tithing being a turn off, it's not a lack of generosiy that troubles me, in fact it's the opposite. We are free from the law, of which tithing is a part. In the new deal, we have been paid for at a price, and are by our own acceptance and submission, wholy owned by God. That includes everything we own....so it is all his, we are just stewards. I don't need to "give back to God", it is his already. So to those who live by the law of tithing, I ask are you coveting 90% of what is God's?
If it is all His, then be a good steward, and be generous to pastors and teachers, but to the poor also. Feel free to also have nice things, and live well...He didn't purchase us at such a high cost to be downtrodden, he did so to raise us to sit at the table with Himself! That's pretty cool!

Hi Big Cheese, I didn't mean you personally...I was speaking to all who might read and make a judgement. Your views are relevent to me, and well taken. I tend to lean toward the profound consequences, rather than the unintended consequences. Reason...if I do everything perfectly, proclaim Jesus perfectly, there will be those that hate me..it's a negative uninteded consequence. Even doing the very best, produces some negative consequences, because we live in a fallen world.

Before we get too pious, remember this, his church is full. Week in and week out I hear pastors drone on about the need to give a tithe...a concept of the old testament which is similar to our modern version of welfare....I seldom hear pastors ask merely for offerings. It's ahuge turn off. I think this church by taking the opposite apprach is reaching out to people who might never come otherwise. I would think to complain if the pastor were giving out drugs or prostitutes...but a giving a little love present back? No problem.
