KATU - Portland, OR : Special-needs child left on hot bus for hours | KATU.com - Portland, Oregon | Local

Debbie, Yes there are different rules for the special needs students. First of all the teacher has a phone in her room and your are encouraged/asked to call if your student will NOT be in class for any reason. They have extra staff on a daily basis to care for these kids. If a student is NOT going to be in class, that staff member will either be told to stay home (example a one to one assistant) or sent to another location where help is needed. They do not bring a "note" from home when they miss a day is they are in the DLC. (disabled learning center).

Finally, I hope that the Mom and Techer work out a good daily communication system. This is vital when sending a disabled child to school. They need to touch base each and every morning as to whether or not the child will be a school for the day. Will she be ON the bus or not? That provides a safety net since each bus is met by the teacher or a classroom assistant. They can double check as to WHO is on the bus.

My heart goes out to this Mom and Teacher. I raised two special needs children in the public school system. Almost all of the bus drivers we had were very kind and competent. They did an excellent job with my children as well as communicated with the teacher/aides on a daily basis. It was my responsibility to call the school/classroom each day to let them know if my child would NOT be attending. The teacher was busy with the other 13 or so kids in the disabled learning class, so her classroom aides usually took the calls. In my childs class their were at least 4 aides plus the teacher every day for the 13 students. I place the full blame on the bus driver. Yes, he or she should be fired. As for "why" is this child in school at 3 years old? It's called EARLY intervention. These kids have to work twice as hard as the normal child to learn simple things like waiting your turn, walking in line, staying seated when asked etc..

KATU - Portland, OR : Should illegal immigrant students be able to pay in-state tuition? | KATU.com - Portland, Oregon | L

Gee, I don't know why they should have to pay at all! Free Food, Free Medical, Free Housing, Free School...Is it me or am I actually seeing a pattern here? I say let them go for FREE! Maybe we can even get them to set up some TACO wagon's so those of us that have money can actually BUY them. These poor individuals need help! Why not just give them each a key to the state! I'm sure Gov. Teddy would love some company!

KATU - Portland, OR : Missing autistic teen found after search | KATU.com - Portland, Oregon | News

As a parent of kids with autism, I'm just a little baffled. I don't know ANY person with Autism that DRIVES! If he truly is autistic, what was he doing driving in the first place?????How could he obtain a license? If he's not licensed, where are his parents/guardian? This is very sad. I wish the best for this young man.
