Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Midweek report

I just think it is funny because it isn't his quote, don't give him the credit. That is sort of like giving credit to Aerosmith for singing Come Together, despite it being the Beatles song. You don't have to follow running either, it is a famous quote.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Katz talking, links

Agreed. I don't normally want personal fouls but this year I wouldn't mind a little bit of good ol' Dennis Erickson. I would probably cheer on a player who fought back, even if they were ejected. It would show me that the player cares. It is clear to me that the refs are only calling let hits on QB's out of bounds, everyone has been fair game for years. The Beavers need to know that the refs aren't calling the games right, that means they can take their dirty shots and get away with it. Heck, maybe it will take a brawl in a game before the refs start to call the games right.

Quite a few coaches will tell you showing a video of someone else's successes doesn't accomplish anything. The video may inspire the athlete but it doesn't make them a better athlete. The athlete has to want the success from within their own heart.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Seriously, that is a Steve Prefontaine quote (old UO Runner), who ironically did sacrifice the gift by dying in a drunk driving accident.

I definitely think that the defense we run doesn't work. It seems that Riley has a lot of faith in his coaches, it doesn't mean we have to. Riley is blinded by his loyalty to Banker, he doesn't see that this defense has been on a steep decline since the end of 2008. Also, it seems that some of the fan base is giving Riley a pass now. The idea seems to be, "well Coach is working hard, it's just the players fault." Anytime the players aren't executing look to the coaches. It is the coaches job to get everyone ready to play, physically and mentally. Also, it is their job to evaluate talent and recruit guys who can play the game.

I think he has every right to slight the lineman. They clearly aren't trying for him. He is gunna get hurt with the way blocks keep getting missed. Only thing that he risks right now is that the lineman will purposefully miss blocks, not sure if they weren't already. The line has clearly already quit.

Disgusted, the only word to describe how I feel after that game. This team clearly lacks heart. They may be great athletes but this team simply doesn't have football players. The small bright spot on the otherwise poor history of OSU football may have been blotted out. 11/13/10 may be the day OSU football died. Over-under on Ducks total points in the CW? 120?

Pull your head out and watch the game again. If you are going to slam any single player it is Pankey. He is a coward, he simply will not tackle unless it is simply to dive on a pile after the play. Roberson may not be playing well but Pankey may be the worst college player to ever play the game.

Our run game didn't work last week. Further, the answer to our offense has been blitz. Playaction fails against the blitz.

This is more an indictment of our inability to make significant adjustments during a game. That has always been a problem with our coaching staff. tim33, the formation that you alluded to is called the Jumbo set and has been around for a very long time. It coincides with a power running scheme, not our zone. ean, playaction only works when the opponent is biting on the run fake. UCLA killed us by simply blitzing which is unaffected by the playaction. In that case, playaction simply slows down the development of the play and ultimately Katz' time to make reads.

I agree Mike, it is always fair to say that when you point a finger there are three pointing back. But I agree with Coach Riley, we didn't execute well. I think the O is taking a lot of heat for their performance against UCLA. If you look at the athletes that UCLA has on defense you would be pretty impressed, they were definitely going to hold us under our season average. I definitely think that Ayers and Moore are future NFL starters. Owa probably can be too.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: WSU presser

I have to say that the comments here are a little out of hand and some unfounded. I have been very critical of this team but of Langsdorf and Cav I am not critical. Cav doesn't need to be defended, you understand football you know how lucky we are to have him. You can kiss the success we have a long hard goodbye without him. Second, Langsdorf is the one who brought the fly sweep, the trick plays and the other creativity in. Yes his play calling sometimes struggles but any young coach will see that happen. Langsdorf will have a shot at being a headcoach someday. Anyone that wants to point fingers at the offense should point fingers at the defense first. You simply cannot win a game in which your defense allows well over 50% third down conversions (with a backup QB) and over 200 yards rushing. Our defense was physically dominated and Banker seemed confused throughout the entire game. Anyone wanting 60 points a game simply won't get it and is foolish to think they deserve it. The offense that OSU runs is about ball control. A ball control offense scores 30-40 when it is maxed out and doesn't allow the other team to touch the ball. Frankly, if we can't win a bunch of games averaging 28 points a game (like we are this season) we don't deserve to win games. Now the comments about talent/recruiting are certainly fair game, that is the reason our team is 4-4. wcjr, you should know that a walk-on is not an athlete that no one else wanted. Clay Matthews was a stud linebacker for USC and is a study Green Bay LB. He walked on at USC. There were plenty of teams that wanted him. You would be correct in saying that most of our walk-ons don't have many offers but we still in fact recruit athletes who have offers to be walk-ons.

Cliff, we finished tied for second last year. My understanding is that the old Pac-10 bowl contract would allow the 2nd place bowl to select any of the 2nd place teams. The Holiday Bowl could have selected us last year if they had really wanted. We did end up going to the 5th place bowl game after all. The Pac-10 tie-ins didn't always select according to contract, they made modifications when they wanted.
