I am in my seventies and my grandparents have been gone many years but they taught me to have respect for all our neighbors. My grandmother was a devout Christian and had a love for all people. Being white, I must add that the racial prejudice I feel is directed at many whites I have known over the years because I don't like trash, whatever the color. I'm reasonably sure that there exists in our society racial hatred, though, and it includes blacks hatred for whites as well as whites hatred for blacks. Racial hatred is not exclusive for either race nor is it practiced only in the South. It has been my experience to have worked and been friends with both blacks and whites and I have never lived outside the South but I have traveled extensively over the US and I am happy to say, most folks just try to get along. At no time did we ever consider having a separate bathroom for the help. Only one of the women had small children and frequently the children were brought to our house for the day. The women who worked for my parents cooked and they ate after the family did but they ate at the same table or took the cooked food to their home with them when they left at the afternoon. This is the same story for almost every home in our town, very few mothers stayed home since they too had to work to pay the bills. We were not of the upper crust society in "The Help" but most of the book was not representative of the South, as I lived it. I thought the book was shallow but, hey, it is a work of fiction.
